Update 4: The Übermensch walks among us.

After days spent on intoxicating himself with the toxic smoke of Firemore Keeper Hellraiser decides on when to strike next.

: Warlock! I thirst for blood, where is the nearest land I can burn to the ground?

: Lord Keeper, I think I found one which will suit your needs.

: Lushmeadow-on-Down - The bloody axes of war and famine have so far
bypassed this quiet backwater, leaving the inhabitants totally
unaware of the purpose of real agony and loss. Unbearably, most die
of old age.

: Soon the corpses of their dead will litter their fields!
Order the slaves to begin construction of my new dungeon.

: Lord Keeper, it seems another usurper calling himself a true servant of Chaos is calling this land his domain.

: He can expect a slow and painful death!

: Gold deposits have been found nearby Lord Keeper. There are also portals to the west and north.
I suspect that the north one is already claimed by the enemy keeper.

: I will claim it sooner than he thinks. Order the slave overseer to build the basic chambers.

Moments later.

: There is a slight problem Lord Keeper. It seems that the slave overseer has disappeared.

: What do you mean warlock?! How could he disappear?!

: I searched around the camp, he is nowhere to be found. I did order the slaves to perform the tasks you ordered.

: What treachery is this?! Interrogate the slaves and find out what happened.

: Yes Lord Keeper.

: Lord Keeper, the slaves have completed the ordered tasks and new minions have joined your horde.

: You warlocks have discovered a ritual allowing you to gaze into unexplored areas.

: They waste my time! Order them to discover new useful ways to kill and not nonsense like this!

: I have a report Lord Keeper. Secrets of guard post construction have been revealed to your warlocks and your minions have been paid for their services.
Lord Keeper I also wanted to report that spiders have joined your horde. These arachnids can slowly turn the insides of your enemies into a liquid while they are still alive.

: The slower and more painful the better.

: Order the slaves to expand in the northern direction.

: Come weakling, I will show you the true power of the Dark Gods.

: You betrayed me?! Traitorous fool! You think you are a match for me?!

: I have seen how you lead your crusade. It is pathetic. You are weak and unworthy of the gifts of Chaos.
I will crush you and lead the crusade personally. The Dark Gods demand this.

: The only thing the Dark Gods demand is RIPPING OUT YOUR TONGUE AND SODOMIZING YOU WITH IT WORM!

: At least you didn't have to wait long to find out why he disappeared Lord Keeper.

Make yourself useful and manage the slaves until I find a new loyal slave overseer. Start by expanding the lair and building a workshop. Then order the slaves to dig
north until they reach whatever hole that traitorous worm is hiding in.

: The guard post has been completed, your forces are ready to expand north.

: Order the slaves to dig at once!

: It seems we found a bunker in the middle of a lake of lava Lord Keeper.

For Many Millennia I Have Worked On A Final Solution To This Problem, The Grimoire.

: [booming voice] It Is An Artifact Of Immense Incline Spreading Power.
You Will Aid Me With Your Slave Labor. With It I Will Be Able to Complete The Grimoire. In Return I Will Manage Your Slaves
And Share With Your Trap Makers The Secrets Of The Trap Making Art That I Have Discovered In The Millennia Of Working On The Grimoire.

: It is a deal Daemon. You may use my slaves as you
please, when they are not doing any necessary tasks that is.

: [booming voice] Very Well Mortal. I Will Start By Giving Your Slaves The Knowledge Of Prison Construction.
You Can Use These Chambers To Imprison Your Nearly Dead Enemies Either To See Them Dying Of Hunger And Becoming Skeletons Or To Keep Them Alive For Torturing.

: I can already see this pact becoming very beneficial to my unholy crusade.

Suddenly the Keeper falls down and losses consciousness. He has another vision of the warp and the Greater Daemon speaking to him.
The noise of the Warp is as overwhelming as it was in his first vision.

: MORTAL [a thousand man cry out in pain] ONE MUST LIVE [a wave of warp energy sweeps by] ANOTHER OF HIS KIND [loud sounds of thunder are heard] SECOND KEY [another wave of warp energy sweeps by] RITUAL WILL...

Keeper Hellraiser suddenly awakens.

: I Could Sense Your Mind Being Connect With Another Within The Warp.

: I had another vision of that Daemon. He spoke of the ritual again and of your kind. Warlock! Did you

: I have found some very old references. Written in an old language I barely understand. From what I managed to
decipher it seems three sacrifices are needed. But I still don't know
what these sacrifices are supposed to be other than that one is supposed to be a troll.

: Then start deciphering it further immediately!

: I will Lord Keeper.

: Daemon, these minions seem to have an infinite lust for useless trinkets.
My treasury is nearly empty, order the slaves to expand the mining operations.

: [booming voice] It Will Be Done Keeper.

: Lord Keeper, we have discovered an enemy dungeon corridor.

: Finally! The worm won't be able to hide any longer.
Prepare the possession ritual and a vessel.

: I have to admit it, the sight of dead imps is very pleasant.

: Pathetic fools, you are no match for me.

: You are no match for the true power of the Dark Gods!

: You do not wield their power worm! You are too weak! Beg the Ruinous Powers for forgiveness before I maim you!

: Soon I will claim your dungeon for the Dark Gods!

: Enemy minions are advancing towards your dungeon Lord Keeper!

: Order the minions to kill these fools! Actually wait, capture them alive if possible and test out my new prison.
I want to see them slowly turning against each other as the hunger forces them to cannibalism.

: You called these worms your army?

: This is just a small sample of the might of my forces!

: If it is than your undoing is even more certain than it already was!

: I find killing your imps quite entertaining traitor.

: I will find beheading you with my bare hands even more entertaining!

: Too bad that won't happen worm!

: I wonder how long will it be before the spiders eat that imp or sodomize it.

: More enemy minions are attacking from the north Lord Keeper!

: It seems you ran out of minions traitor.

: I do not need them to kill you weakling!

: One of the prisoners has died and risen as a skeleton Lord Keeper.

: Excellent, you can't kill that which is already dead.

: Actually Lord Keeper the undead are animated by rather unstable forces.
These forces might completely dissipate given enough damage to the animated skeleton.

: [booming voice] I Have Remedied Your Gold Supply Problems By Ordering The Slaves To Mine A New Deposit And Construct A New Treasury Nearby.

: Excellent. Warlock! Order my horde to thrust deep into enemy territory!

: It seems you are short on followers traitor!

: [booming voice] The Slaves Have Captured This Portal Keeper.

: Time to assault the dungeon heart. Warlock! Prepare the possession ritual!
I will personally lead the assault.

: This isn't over yet weakling!

: You're right it isn't.

The battered traitor lies on the ground, Keeper Hellraiser stands above him.

He reaches out with his hand and rips out the traitor's tongue.

: GHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA... [screams of pain]

: Now it is over.

: What do you want to do with this land Lord Keeper?

: Improve it and rename it as Knife.

[a few days pass]

: It is done Lord Keeper.

: Knife - The streets run with the blood of the slain. Screams of pain
and the howls of anguish rip the night air like a vengeful siren song.
This really is somewhere you can take the kids for a weekend.

: This improvement would bring a tear to my eye if crying wasn't for the weak.

: [booming voice] Keeper, While I Was Working On The Grimoire I Discovered A Way To Gaze Into The Kings Castle In Skybird Trill.
With The Help of your Warlock You May See Who You Face with Your Very Own Eyes.

: Warlock! Assist the Daemon!

: Yes Lord Keeper.

An orb of appears floating within the chamber. It emanates with powerful warp energies. An image appears. It shows the insides of a castle.

: My king why can't we already go into battle with this evil?

The image of the king is blurry.

: Because I ordered the armorers to outfit your horses with the finest armor first. You will need it in your battle.

: But the evil dwells underground in cramped corridors. Our mounts will be useless there.

: Nonsense!

: Actually my Liege, he does have a point. Plus the horse armor is only cosmetic, it won't help in combat in any way.

The image of the king becomes sharper, a clear silhouette is visible.

: But hitting the enemy from horseback is the very essence of fighting evil!

: Your Majesty please reconsider, you only delay our assault and with every day this "Keeper Hellraiser" claims new territory.

: No, I am the king and you listen to me. If you don't like it then GTFO!

The image of the castle disappears.

: That fool rules this land?!

: [booming voice] Indeed He Does Keeper. He Has Spread Decline To Levels Which Put The Achievements Of His Predecessors In That Area To Shame.
He Is One Of The Reasons Why The Decline is Strong Here. He Must Be Crushed!

: His lack of competence will make that task almost too easy.

: Do not underestimate him Lord Keeper. He might be a fool but the decline gives him unimaginable strength and his lords command great armies.

: I will crush both him and his pathetic lords!

Didn't really use traps that much in this one, the fighting started just after the workshop was built.

Bros, unfortunately I realized I missed the first bonus mission. For some reason I thought the imp one was the first bonus mission. Although you won't see that mission for a while because I did it a lot later than it appeared.
However the good news is that this was the last of the tutorial missions. Now the real fun, challenge and glorious carnage will start.

I remember my favorite thing was trying to capture a lord of the land so I could play in the Room of Horrific Doors. As much as I enjoyed this game and it's much improved sequal, I have never beaten them.

Dear Sir, I thank you for providing this excellent entertainment for us. I am loving the inclusion of Cleve, and the writing you do.

I am already hoping that after this, you will follow up by doing DK2.

As much as I enjoyed this game and it's much improved sequal, I have never beaten them.

Same here.. that is also an extra reason to follow the LP for me. Maybe I will see a good solution to the mission I got stuck on, and I will finally replay it.

I loved the fact that you could possess creatures, and the nice touches that seem to be missing in the games of these days like possessing an hound (or something) provides us with only a black and white vision. Brilliant game, and this LP does it justice. Looking forward to next update.

So I didn't remove this from an inventory the other day, and I really have to ask, IS THERE A DIFFICULTY SLIDER? I might be an idiot, but I can't find one. It's just that this game is so ridiculously easy (albeit addictive). Today I even left the game on and went out for a few hours, and when I got back my imps had completed the level for me. I even finished a stage with only imps and warlocks (because other monsters refused to get summoned for some damn reason)

The short answer is no, but as I mentioned before the first 5 levels are the tutorial so the difficulty is a joke. The first real one isn't hard either, it's the 3rd non-tutorial level where I actually fucked up and got defeated for the first time when replaying DK for this topic.

It gradually gets more difficult from there with the 4th level having some rather tough monsters and the one after that being fucking hard if you do not know how to defeat that asshole keeper. The one after that is another bloodbath as is the next etc. It's basically like that until the very end of the game.

So basically the first 8 levels (including the 5 tutorial ones) are ridiculously easy if you have any living brain cells left in your cranium. The 9th one gives you pause by showing you a glimpse of the potential future distasteful rape by making you fight some ridiculously powerful heroes. After that the difficulty spikes and the enemy just rapes you within 5-10 minutes if you fuck up.

TBH I think the sequel got more difficult faster than DK1. But that could just be me, it has been a while since I played it.

Oh and the update should be coming somewhere after tomorrow bros. I have some popamole presentation to finish first and some other work to do.

Yeah, what I noticed was that the difficulty problems mostly came from how bad the AI is, which you really notice when you're up against other dungeon keepers. You can just wall up, build up your troops a bit, and then start expanding really aggressively. The main concern is that the game might've thrown, like you said, ridiculously powerful heroes in here and there.

Anyway, great LP. I like the story elements you put in.

I should probably give DK2 a spin as well.

It's a spider, yeah. Dungeon Keeper had a bunch of distortion filters it uses whenever you possess a minion. so the giant flies gives you a faceted view, vampires see the world in black and white etc. Can't recall which minion uses the fisheye lens that's in your screenshot. It looks better ingame when stuff is actually moving.

Update 5: Horrible creatures, I avoid them whenever I can.

In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium there is only war. In the decline of King Todd's
kingdom however there is a shining beacon of incline hellbent on maiming, torturing and sodomizing anyone in his path.
This champion of distasteful rape is currently preparing to assault yet another popamole infested hellhole. One thing is certain,
there will be blood. His unholy crusade approaches the outer reaches of the region when....

Cleve grabs the creature and devours it in a most disgusting vomit-inducing manner which greatly pleases Lord Nurgle.

: Construction is going as planned and new minions have joined your horde Lord Keeper.

: Build a guard post at the southern entrance. The last thing I need is that fool defiling my fortress with his presence or those freakish hopping abominations, oh and order the slaves to build both a new prison and a workshop warlock.

: Yes Lord Keeper, I will relay these orders to the Daemon.

: No pReeZON CaN hOLd mY PowAH! GuaRDz caNNot sTOp trOO sERVantZ of ChaoZ!

A bright flash lits the chamber blinding everyone in sight for a brief moment. The stench of burned flesh can be smelled in the air. The rabbit has been killed.

: Finally this hideous beast is dead....

: [hoppity]

: Your slaves have found an underground lake Lord Keeper.

: This fool thinks... some water... WILL STOP ME?!

: WHAT NO ENEMIES?!

Just after finishing that sentence Keeper Hellraiser once again loses consciousness. He can see the Great Daemon speaking to him once again. The noise of the warp is as unbearable to mortal ears as is was during his previous visions.

: SHE IS THE FINAL KEY [loud screams of torture victims gone mad from the pain are heard] ALTAR [great roars of a daemon horde are heard] SACRIFICE [warp energy explodes with tremendous force somewhere near] UNBOUND....

Keeper Hellraiser awakens.

: Another vision... Daemon what do you know of a sacrifice of made of a troll, a mistress and one of your kind?

: [booming voice] It Is The Ritual Of Unbounding, Used To Summon Powerful Daemon To This World.

: What do I need to summon this Great Daemon?

: [booming voice] A Temple Worthy Of The Ruinous Powers And A Sacrifice Of The Most Powerful Of Minions.

: Then I will make the sacrifice as soon as possible.

: This torture chamber is a magnificent addition to my dark citadel! Daemon! Order the slaves to build a treasury near my new torture chamber and dig the gold near it.

: [booming voice] As You Wish... Keeper.

: [booming voice] I Have Taught Your Craftsmen How To Construct Lightning Traps. These Arcane Constructs Will Electrocute Anyone Foolish Enough To Get Near One.

: A useful device, it should keep these fluffy white abominations away from me.

: [hoppity]

: Lord Keeper the minions have been paid I also bring some troubling news...

: I CapCHOORed UR BridGE! SoON I WiLL iMPALe yOO!

: PREPARE THE ASSAULT!

: Order the slaves to check if any of them are still breathing Daemon. If they are imprison them, I need them to test this new torture chamber.

: [booming voice] It Shall Be Done.

: How do you like this pain you are in? You think this is all I can do? YOU ARE WRONG!!!

: One of your torture victims has died and risen as a ghost.

: He was weak, that torture wasn't even a quarter as painful as that what I planned for him! Send another prisoner for torture!

: Send another assault force, it is time for the enemy to be rewarded for his insolence!

: NoW I aM StROnGER! Yoo wILL MeeT UR dOOM!

: What?! Where do you think you are going?!!

: It is payday Lord Keeper...

: THERE IS NO SUCH THINGS AS PAYDAY IN THE MIDDLE OF GLORIOUS CARNAGE!

: Claim faster you worms!

: Soon I will have a subject worthy of torturing!

: No! I wiLL DefEEEt yOO!

: I am coming for you worm! Warlock! Prepare the possession ritual!

: Now, what do you prefer? Being forced to drink boiling oil or having your flesh slowly torn off from your body by hungry trolls?

: Warlock! Rename the land as Steep Scythe and get rid of those fluffy abominations!

: Yes Lord Keeper.

Days pass, the Warlock returns to the torture chamber where Keeper Hellraiser has been torturing his opponent ever since ordering the Warlock to rename and burn the land.

: It is done Lord Keeper.

: Steep Scythe - Everyone has been put to the sword, and we've made an
enormous magic carpet out of the thousands of bunnies that swarmed
here. Your minions will feast on their tiny remains for weeks. Truly
a majestic victory.

: Magnificent.

Meanwhile in King Todd's War Camp the King himself instructs two of his knights how to fight the evil that is sweeping across the land...

: That is not how you do it men! You can't just charge and hack the monster's head off!
You need to stand in front of it and tell it that you are a champion of good! Tell it of all your glorious achievements. Only after that you can attack.

: How long are we supposed to list our triumphs to it your majesty?

: Fifteen minutes.

: But won't the monster attack us while we say all that?

: Nonsense! It is bound by rules of honor to listen to the hero as he lists his glorious deeds.

: Well I guess it is... [he whispers to the knight next to him] Has the king been drinking today?

: [the other knight whispers back] I wish drinking was the cause of his madness...

Score:

I was disappointed at the lack of bloodletting in this level. I kind of forgot about all the boring easy early levels between the tutorial and the ones with glorious carnage. Fortunately there are at most 2 more easy ones ahead. Updates should be coming more frequently from now on though and they should contain a lot more enemy minion/hero torturing.
