So this and the other slitherine RTS,
Starship Troopers, both look interesting. I think they're developed by different people in-house though, where this is Syrian War devs, and ST is Order of Battle devs? I haven't played any of those games, so could someone contrast T:DF vs ST?
Parsimonious cook i think you were active in the ST thread as well
They are very different. Starship Troopers have some basic base building elements and no persistent units, so it is much more like a "standard" RTS. The special thing about it that differentiates it from stuff like lets say DoW is that the units cant shoot through each other, so you have to micro their positions to maximise the ammount of firepower you can put on target. Given the subject matter it has some resemblance to "horde defence" games as well, since you are always massively outnumbered by hordes of primarily melee enemies who come out of holes that you can shut.
Terminator on the other hand is based on Syrian Warfare, so it takes much more indept aproach to things. Pretty much all buildings can be garrisoned by infantry. There is a huge number of unit types which have specific uses, units are persistent and gain experience from each mission, all units require ammo (plus vehicles need fuel too - there are specialised supply units for this). There are RPG elements in many missions (you can talk to various characters and make decisions) and there is a strategic layer in between missions, where you manage supplies, upgrade your units etc. In general, it is much more detailed and emphasis is placed on combined arms (using infantry to clear out AT units from buildings, using vehicles to rush enemy arty etc) and just like Syrian Warfare the game is very much about microing and save scumming your way out of tricky situations (ie stuff like rushing an APC with an assault squad through area covered by ATGMs so you can take an important building and such).
So yeah - ST is a specific game which is p. gud at what it does, ie bringing you a game where you fight movie bugs with anti-horde tactics. It is fun and especially if you like the subject matter it is unlikely to disappoint. It doesnt aspire to be more than it is, so some people might perhaps find it a bit simplistic (and they wouldnt be wrong).
Terminator on the other hand is much more hard core RTS which brings a much more "holistic" look at combat and explores some territories that are usually avoided by RTS devs (ie dialogues and strategic layer). There is stuff like logistics units and trailers that can be towed by other vehicles that you pretty much wont find outside of hard core wargames. It does tons of very cool things, is hard as fuck and requires a lot of micro and save scumming, which might not be for everyone.
Personally I found ST very enjoyable, though Terminator is something much more special.
