I think you'll enjoy KOTOR 2 more if you do play it and considering how great that game is despite its massive flaws I'd say go for it.

KOTOR 1 and 2 are great

KOTOR 1 is basically a good Star Wars movie and then KOTOR 2 is a great deconstruction of Star Wars ideas

Play them both they are good

Ignore all the edgy people itt

KOTOR 1 is cliched but it fits in that Star Wars world

KoToR's a good baby's first RPG, it's pretty thoroughly middle-of-the-road in regards to practically every aspect of the game. Story's okay, Gameplay's not great, but not cripplingly bad, characters range from decent to your standard biowarian fare, villain is a fairly shallow not-Vader, music's standard Star Wars fare, etc.

If anything, this makes it even harder to give an overall recommendation for because it's just so utterly average.

I played the first level of Jedi Knight a few months ago on whatever the hardest difficulty level was and I was shocked how much more important all the different resources were. 99% of your shots count.

No. They are both equal horse shit.

And classic RPGs apparently, too
KOTOR became ten years old as of last month. Of course the people who played it when they were young would consider it a classic.

Play it for an hour. There are some underground means to try the games cheap off the internet if you are afraid of spending your money.

Don't play it in hardest level bro if you ever gonna start it in the future. Game is (nearly)impossible to finish with that thanks to the escort and protection missions.

I liked KOTOR's story a lot for years (don't spoil yourself), but yes it's cliche and the villain is more of a supporting role to your own PC. The combat is fun to WATCH but to play you select a small que of options to be carried out and occasionally cancel some stuff out to change tactics or take direct control of PC movement (I wonder if I wouldn't mind this combat so much today if it were a blobber with the greater speed of executing actions that comes with it).

Talking with NPCs is probably the main draw of this game. In fact this was my first game that allowed me to have "conversations" with NPCs (the novelty has worn off on me over the years since the KOTORs and Jade Empire, but at least I have all these wonderful
people
crusty bastards on the Codex to talk to :P)

Definitely hit up the Dark Forces series before Kotor if you have any liking of FPS.

DF is a solid doom clone. No lightsabers
DF2:JK Adds lightsabers and force powers. Has some absurdly fun level design. Saber combat is a bit wonky, but it makes sabers actually feel hard to use so that you only pull it out vs Sith ala TOS
DF3:JK2:JO Puts most of the focus on the lightsaber, making you a guy who flips out and kills everyone in the room on the spot. Goes the prequel route of making sabers really overpowered, but adds a lot more saber enemies so it's still cool. Level design is a bit weaker though.
DF4:JK3:JO2:JA Is JO with some new stuff added. You get to masturbate to how awesome wielding 2 sabers or a double bladed saber is. Kind of meh compared to others, still a good game. You don't play as Kyle Katarn though.

It's honestly quite amazing that the series maintained such a high level of quality even as each was a completely new game on a new engine with totally different mechanics and focus (exception to JA, but it still adds quite a bit).

You talking about Jedi Outcast? I'm assuming so since I don't recall escort or protection missions in JK. And they tend to be easy if you abuse force powers correctly, though it might require a retry or two.

It's better than the second one. :smug: Come at me MCAtards.

It focuses less on party characters than any Bioware game since - so that's a big plus. The engine is shit. The story is typical Bioware grandiose and prophesied story. The first big city is far too big and far too big a chunk of the total playtime.
What you meant was the city is the best part, because it didn't had lightsaber faggotry while the other planets felt rushed and you wanted to commit mass suicide when you got to the beach planet with banal, shit, boring aliens, right?

This,Jedi Knight and outcast are obligatory to any FPS and Star War fans, they had that grimdark feeling that the old movies had while Bioware fucked everything by fully embracing the new trilogy, so clean and shinny that looks boring art style on Kotor and Old Republic.

I am a Star Wars fan and could not stomach the Bioware in KOTOR long enough to make it more than 1/3 of the way through. Never tried KOTOR2 as a result. Possibly it could have been rescued with an isometric-ish interface a-la Infinity Engine though. I cannot fathom why you'd want to manage a party from 3rd person perspective.

KOTOR 1 is basically just NWN 1 in space. The story is just a rehash of the latter and even the gameplay feels similar. Of course, if you want to be an elite Kodexer like @MetalCraze you'll have to play the game at least 7 times.

Played KOTOR 2 seven times :smug: and Dark forces are +M :obviously: even for not great fan of FPSs and Star Wars like Commissar. Kotor 1 is on the other hand.... classic Biowhore before going full gay and EA game. Would play Jade Empire instead as the latter has at least fresh setting and NO Carth Onasi.

Well, if you really itching for SW and have lots of spare time go ahead and play it. Then play KOTOR 2 and at last play The Old Repulic.
Those will proabaly cure your SW fever forever (like me...)

Or just play Dark Forces and X-wing vs. Tie Fighter series.

I hope this Abrams fellow realizes the dark junk future style of Empire Strikes Back is why people love this franchise.
