Baldur's Gate Compilation - Extras?

It now appears i can't install some of the content mods if i install any tweak packs. You have to follow a certain order. Pain in the fucking ass. Maybe i should try Big World again, but i really did like the fact you could get the original menu skin with TuTu.

Anybody courageous enough to do the full install willing to draw a list of mods that don't fuck up the experience? I know Darkest Day is supposed to be extremely shitty. Not sure about the others. I mean, shitty writing i could handle (like the original game had good writing), at least for quests (i'm staying clear of any NPC mod), but some of those big mods promise "hundreds" of items, kits and spells and i'm pretty its going wreck the whole game. I'd like to create an installation with has much added content as reasonably possible while maintaining a slow progression, with fewer magic items and decent overall balance.

I just noticed that there's some mods at the end that actually nerf some of the bigger mod packs. With this in mind i decided to go for the "Tactic" version and see what happens. I'm not even going to bother removing the NPC mods. Too much work. I'll just slaughter them in game for shits and giggles. This might be the first time i actually get to play an evil character in an RPG.

If you've got the GoG versions of BG/BG2 then you'll have some difficulty installing BWP. There is a workaround.

Explain.

1) Install to ..\Baldur's Gate and ..\BGII - SoA as BWP doesn't like anything but the default folder names.
2) The installer doesn't notice the fact that the GoG version is already patched, so reinstall the patch and copy over the BG2-ToBPatchReadMe.txt from the root of C:\ to ..\BGII - SoA - I did try a blank file but it didn't seem to fool the installer.
3) It complains about the missing 25Movies.bif but you can fool it by creating ..\BGII - SoA\CD5\movies and copying the .bif into it (It's in ..\BGII - SoA\data\Movies)
4) There are also complaints about some missing .WAVs in ..\Baldur's Gate but that isn't isolated to the GoG version. They can be downloaded from BWP website IIRC
5) Install WeiDU manually as it errors out downloading. Once again not isolated to GoG.

Think that's it?

Remember, it's the BiG_World_Setup.exe you are supposed to be using...

If you just want EasyTutu and a few mods that improve the game without adding too much custom content, the following installation order worked well for me:

  Remember to always use the 'custom install' option and select all components each time, otherwise you do not get truly full installations and the modifications will not work

I have been playing the game on a computer with Windows 7 64-bit and I have not encountered any issues so far.

The Hard Times mod (available as optionable content in EasyTutu) is indeed quite brilliant. Other components, such as the banter pack, take some liberties with the characters, so only install them at your own risk.

The Widescreen Mod is easy to install, and if you change your mind about the resolution you selected the first time around you can always run the Widescreen mod setup again to change the parameters. As far as I know, it does not cause any issues with the other mods.

The Restored Textscreen Mod addresses an issue with EasyTutu that resulted in cutscenes (dreams, etc.) being played without their proper background music. I always thought the dream sequences were some of the best parts in the game, so I consider this mod to be very much essential.

Is there ANY content mod (mods that add quests and locations) actually worth installing, at all? The Darkest Day is shit. Shadows over Soubar appears to be shit. Drizzt saga is a given. Right now i'm looking at Check the Bodies, Tortured Souls, Region of Terror, Dark Side of the Sword Coast and Secret of the Bone Hill. Anything of value here? Any other content mod i'm not aware of that's actually worth installing?

Somehow i fancied the idea of playing through 400+ hours of gaming content through a span of 20 d&d levels. I was even ready to reduce the XP gain to 75%. I'm bored enough to be able to put up with sub-par content, but this fan fic crap is just too much, even in my current state of absolute apathy.

BTW, there's also two total conversions that add content (though not directly into the game, they are supposed to be stand alone). A certain Never Ending Journey, and one which actually seems pretty interesting: Classical Adventures. Worth looking into?

Region of Terror is pretty hard, Vecna is a high level mod (it's retardedly hard), Torturend Soul inquires upon Yoshimo's story by adding Kachiko (a bounty hunter whose purpose is to hunt and kill Yoshi). Never ending Journey isn't a total conversion per se. You start BGII normally but if you enter the southern portal you're teleported back in time into IWD. Part I ends with you getting teleported in the Promenade, the game continues from then on until part II.
Dark side of the Sword Coast is a pack of mods supposed to add up some high level encounter in BGI (a lich quest, a dragon, defeat the vampire lord). Darkest Day isn't shit per se, it's just a mish mash of munchin mods. You might want to install the planar sphere mod, the illithid npc mod, the colour mod and the other mods from Lava, Fishing for trouble is pretty good as well. There is also another mod which lets you play a different route from the usual Shadow Thieves/Bodhi's guild subset of quests. Classical adventure is good but I didn't play it that much, Bonehill is pretty decent, Shadows over Soubar does add some decent questline and the ability to be a smuggler.
RE does add some tasteful rape and the ability to whore your female PC out
Also the Longer Road (to recruit Irenicus). The only NPC mods I liked would be: Soulafein, Edwin's romance, Tiax, Imoen, Haer'daelis, Nalia's Expanded.

Same as above. I know what the mod does, i don't know if its actually worth playing it. I also don't fucking like Yoshimo (or anything asian in my cookie cutter fantasy RPG).

The writing is very poor so far. I played through several NWN mods which ranged for dreary fan fic crap to pretty good. I half expected the same for BG but so far they all seem to lean towards fan fic material. I just installed a mod that lets you skip the first dungeon in BG2 and even there the writing is pretty fucking stupid. I mean, it doesn't matter since its just a tool but christ.

The Darkest Day was the first mod I installed for Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, and it was not a pleasant experience. I vaguely recall oversized Planescape: Torment areas and some very unappealing item graphics. The only good thing I remember about it is that it allows for Xzar and Montaron to join the party, but since SimDing0's Questpack mentioned above allows for the very same thing, I would much rather go with that instead.

By the way, I would like to recommend the Valen mod for Baldur's Gate 2. She is a pleasant character and a very nice addition to an evil/neutral party. Becomes a bit overpowered, I suppose, but then again, so do all characters, and she is a vampire after all. Encounters and reactions that arise from having her in the party are entertaining and well made.

I dunno what version you played, but the fetch quest have been skippable for years. CtB does add some fun class specific quests, most of BG2 mods aren't a bugfest anymore.

The planar sphere mod did add some fun encounter, it also made the sphere look somewhat alive, most of the overpowered stuff has been toned down.
Yeah Lyric, it does use some PST maps. The Hive (for the mage academy), Curst for Calimport, and much more.

read the forums where the mods are hosted. you can usually tell from the discussions whether the mod is shit or not.

if you just want a fixed and slightly improved experience, get the Fixpack and SCS/SCS2. for convenience things, get the Tweaks.

I remember a weird bug where a portion of the fog war would recover itself after entering and leaving the Inn. It only happened in the Friendly Arms map. It seems that the mods have been able to unlock this bug to its ultimate consequence.

part of it is that the majority of current modders are bewilderingly polite and seem to strive to not step on toes regarding overlap which is why you'll see tons of NPC and mini-quest mods (easy compatibility amongst) and very, very few major revamps like AI or spell system.

there's a ton of work being done with the actual engine now, removing hardcoded limits and expanding functionality. maybe once that gets stabilized someone will venture into TC and campaign level mods to take advantage of the new tools. until then, it's not worth writing out 50k lines of code that may be obsolete in 6 months.
