The treaties themselves are most amicable in their purpose, to allow a peaceful, non-violent space colonization without borders to proceed. and for that reason it would be in everybodys interests that they're followed, at least as long as no human rights violations outside the scope of these contracts would happen.

Alas, the achilles' heel of the agreements is that there'd be nobody to enforce it, and look at the world around you! Not long has passed since the chain of South-American tragedies happened, and everybody witnessed in plain sight the greed and ruthlessness of so many world leaders. Caring not for stability or global prosperity, but being more interested in playing some sort of sick game of Risk against other powers - and it is well known the "western" powers don't even properly trust their own allies, and when sharing this mentality why would they? Considering this sad state of affairs, sooner or later someone would break the treaty, no matter how crafty or convoluted their reasoning might be, and then all hell just might break loose - the only immediate response other powers would be able to instantly muster, would be to strike with the old ICBM arsenals on earth itself!

It can be quite honestly said it'd be unethical for us - Indians and our allies - to not eventually build a fleet capable of ensuring safety for each and every person under our guidance, and by extension protecting the citizens of our rivals as well from the terrors of total war.

The Commonwealth firmly believe in free trade as mean to achieve peace and prosperity for all, while appreciating the spirit of the proposal we can't help in pointing out that regulations and restrictions not only will stifle the advancement of Humanity as a whole but will also infringe on the sovereignty of various Nations, we think that such questions are better left to the invisible hand of the market that has proven again and again its efficiency in achieving the bets results.
For these reasons we can't support any of the proposed treaties.

You all have an interesting idea of the free market. By which I mean if you acknowledge the right of nations to claim exclusive access to moons and asteroids there is no free market at all.

The Guardian Council of the Islamic Caliphate is in agreement with provisions 2, 3, and 5. We must, however, reject provisions 1 and 4. As a developing power, we cannot support any regulations which might hinder our capacity for self-defense.

Lukewarm response from the South East.

"Although we applaud the UN for such initiatives, we can not help but notice that every superpower on Earth is rejecting either some or all of the proposal. To say Nay or Yay in this situation serve no purpose. We of the SEA will keep our silence on this matter. Now excuse me for I have an industry conference to chair."
-Quote from Mr Laclongquan, Chairman of the SEA before he joined the internal conference on the element crisis facing the entire industry -

GREAT POWERS REJECT INITIAL UN TREATY

Our diplomatic correspondents from New York have reported that the Great Powers, in a nearly unanimous vote, have rejected the Treaty for Free Space that had been proposed in the United Nations few weeks ago. Even several days of heated negotiations did not change their stance. The General Secretary is expected to lay out a new treaty shortly, with far more input directly from the Great Powers. Leaked information suggests that it will become possible to claim stellar bodies, in gross violation of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, or more formally the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies. It is assumed that this old treaty will be cast aside as null and void in light of the new developments made possible by the Trans-Newtonian minerals.

U.N. proceedings concluded - unjust treaties repudiated

Supporters of peace and prosperity could breathe a sigh of relief yesterday as the obstructive proposals brought forward in the United Nations General Assembly were rejected by an overwhelming majority of the world community.

Among the major powers of the world, only the People's Republic of China and the Islamic Caliphate voted in favour of more than one of the proposals, whereas the Libertadores and their African allies, in a move as futile as it was poorly executed, sought to hide their involvement by voting against the treaties they themselves helped to create. The Russian Federation, the United States of America and the Commonwealth rejected all proposals, and the progressive European Union denounced all but one.

His Imperial Majesty the Emperor reacted most favourably to the outcome, praising the sound and proper stance taken by the majority of the participants. Our Heavenly Sovereign also commended both China and the Caliphate for partially voting against the proposals, as well their commitment towards the greater good of humanity, even though their preferred methods might of course be described as more idealistic than actually feasible.

The only real cause for concern during the proceedings was the crude and most uncivilised behaviour of the Republic of India. While the EAF sympathise greatly with the plights of the Indian people, not least due to the recent mayhem brought on by the reckless and overly ambitious mining programs of their current regime, no civilised state could ever condone such abhorrent and malicious slander against both itself and its allies. Truly, we can only pray that the Indian leaders come back to their senses, before some of the unpleasant situations they constantly seem to create would escalate further.

President signs treaty with the Commonwealth

Federal President Umeki, who has until now been overseeing the proceedings of Concordia, mankind's first, largest and most successful colony on Mars, returned to Earth earlier this week to personally sign a treaty of non-aggression and friendship with the Commonwealth.

"The Commonwealth possess an admirable commitment to free trade and peaceful progress, and our respective interests and values thus coincide perfectly. I, as well as my cabinet, look forward with great anticipation to the day when the Commonwealth will join us in space to trade, excavate TN-elements and colonise bodies of this solar system and those beyond", President Umeki said during the proceedings.

Greetings and welcome to this special broadcast. Tonight we will discuss the recent treaty between the Federation and her allies, and with us in the studio is none other than our Federal President, Umeki Sae. President, thank you so much for joining us.

q0ObE.png

Thank you, Mr Hanada, it is a pleasure to be here.

bu1YY.png

The news of the joint ownership of Mars has given us much cause for celebration, but aside from all the positive reactions, we have also heard some reports of discontent abroad. If I may ask, how do you view the legitimacy of our claim?

q0ObE.png

My fellow ministers and I have never made a secret of the fact that we believe very strongly in the human right of private ownership. People should enjoy the fruits of their own labour, not have them all taken away and given to others. This fundamental principle is just as valid in space as it is on Earth, and it is also completely in agreement with the official stance of the United Nations, which, as we recall, recently dismissed the notions of socialist-styled global colonisation and universal ownership of TN-elements.

In regards to Mars, the European Union was first to land on the planet and our own Federation was first to colonise it. With extensive help from the Russian Federation and the European Union, we have expanded our operations rapidly. The three of us are the only global powers to maintain bases, mines, factories and garrisons on the planet. Mars, as such, is entirely East Asian, European and Russian.

It is also worth mentioning that all of our efforts so far have been funded solely by the tax-paying citizens and corporations of our respective blocs. Naturally, we owe it to our people to protect their sound investments. I hope that this answers your question.

bu1YY.png

Thank you, President, it most certainly does. To continue, there has been some speculation that the Zürich Treaty could be perceived in a negative light by some of the other powers on Earth, for example the United States of America, the South-East Asian Alliance and the Commonwealth. What is your view on the matter?

q0ObE.png

I would be very surprised if they would react negatively to us protecting that which is rightfully ours. Our treaty partners would never allow foreign powers to settle within their boundaries, nor would they stand idly by if said powers sought to occupy their lands with troops, or otherwise attempt to violate their sovereignty. The same naturally applies to our colonies on Mars.

bu1YY.png

That certainly makes sense. However, is it really warranted to prevent the other powers from simply visiting the planet, even for tourism or purely scientific missions?

q0ObE.png

It might seem excessive, but we must remember that we, as defenders of freedom, are constantly under attack from its enemies. As the Lima atrocity so clearly demonstrated, the threat of terrorism is ever so present. While we seriously doubt that most of the major powers would ever consider engaging in such criminal activities, they could still be infiltrated by those who would, and if so, we would be unable to properly ensure the safety of our people.

bu1YY.png

Thank you for the clarification. On a related note, are the terms of the treaty permanent or subject to change? In particular, could the planet eventually be opened for colonisation by other friendly powers?

q0ObE.png

While I cannot speak for the Russian Federation or the European Union, the ministers and I, as well as our Imperial Majesty, are definitely open to the possibility. However, the development and exploration of Mars is currently at a very critical stage, both for reasons already mentioned and also due to matters of national security which I cannot presently discuss in greater depth. As such, any potential relaxation of the terms would not be possible in the immediate future.

Still, we are not opposed to the concept of eventually allowing more powers to settle the planet, far from it.

bu1YY.png

Some have asked whether or not the treaty also applies to the satellites of the planet, that is, Phobos and Deimos.

q0ObE.png

Not currently, no. Our geological survey teams report that both moons are rather insignificant in terms of TN-elements, and we have therefore opted not to develop them at this stage. Of course, we might eventually establish bases there, but it would most likely be for purely defensive purposes.

bu1YY.png

In regards to the practice of claiming celestial bodies, do you think that our Federation will expand its position in the solar system further?

q0ObE.png

We do not currently plan to claim any other planets, but we have discovered certain asteroids and a couple of moons which we consider to be prime candidates for further expansion. In general, we do not believe it sound to claim bodies we do not currently control or maintain a sizable presence on. Doing so would be unwarranted and frankly, quite greedy.

bu1YY.png

Are there any celestial bodies you believe should be exempt from inclusion in national spheres of interest?

q0ObE.png

The gas giants, first and foremost. Both Jupiter and Saturn can be harnessed for sorium-fuel, the lifeline of our operations in space. Denying other powers access to such important planets would only be detrimental to the well-being of the world community. The only valid reason to do so would be if said power engaged in hostilities against our people.

Furthermore, Mercury is of strategic interest to all powers as it contains vital resources for industrial expansion, and Luna ought to be developed jointly, due to its close proximity to Earth.

bu1YY.png

Now that we have set a precedence for expansion in space, how would you react to news of other powers claiming celestial bodies of their own?

q0ObE.png

A very good question. Naturally, it would depend upon whether or not we would have any special interests in said acquisitions, and how well-established their rights to the objects in question would be. If the claims would hold up to scrutiny, we would certainly support said powers as they stake their claims in the solar system.

bu1YY.png

That concludes our interview. Again, thank you very much for answering our questions.

Also, since the launch of 5.70 seems to be getting closer, as Steve is already running a test campaign to see if there are any major bugs, I'm not going to allow any power to grav survey Sol nor make jump engines no leave the system. The reason for that ban is the impossibility of recreating systems in a new game. Sol system will face major changes with 5.70 as well but at least I can use SM-mode to replicate the minerals and the colonies (though not the civilian mining colonies, AFAIK) in the new game.

So you can research Jump Theory and various other jump-related technologies if you want, which will allow you to start a gravitational survey immediately when the new version of The Great Game launches but they won't benefit you in the short run. I'm deeply sorry if this fucks your plans over - I know it will cause grey hairs to some of you - but I think it's better to restrict you guys to Sol for the moment rather than lose all the effort players invest into extra-solar exploration and exploitation to lose it all when the switch happens.

SAILER OPENS A MINING SITE

Sailer Freight, the Europe's only space shipping line, has expanded its capacities by opening a mining complex on Tethys, one of the moons of Saturn. It is also known as Saturn III. Shareholders are reported to be very optimistic of this new venture, even though Sailer's stock price is still low, at mere 1.46.

DATE TRANSPORT LAUNCHES ITS FOURTH SHIP

This time it was another colony ship, third of its kind in Date's roster. Date's share price climbed up to 10.41, highest of all the currently traded space-capable shipping lines and a comfortable distance from its worst competitor, Sailer Freight, whose stock value has risen to 6.52 after the opening of its first mining complex.
