I guess I'm going to be the first person in this thread to note that the developer Fool's Theory has mostly worked on isometric games until now (including co-development with Larian Studios). That might or might not be relevant to this remake.

My money is on this being a Fallout situation where most modern gamers think Fallout 3 was Fallout 1. I don't think many people give a fuck about W2, let alone W1. Then again, I reaaaly don't understand the phenomenon of W3 either, so who knows.
The typical Witcher 3 fanboy doesn't give a shit about the older games, but will probably play a remake if it's anything like 3 (which it likely will be).
Will definitely play the remake if cracking graphix and neat produkshun valews.

I never played any Witcher games and actually started up W1 earlier this week to see what the hype is all about. I did the prologue thing, and so far my major impression is that the gameplay is shit. Cool intro cinematic though.

Codexers, tell me what to do? Do I keep playing or do I wait for the remake?
Play it but remember to treat it like a game, not an interactive movie.

Original music could be given a bigger budget, richer instrumentation and some extra tunes
W1 OST is already excellent
More money and a bigger orchestra wouldn't improve it
In fact it's more likely to ruin it and turn it into generic drivel, similiar to how DeS Remake shat up the original's ost

Why can't game companies remake games that could actually benefit from a remake instead of remaking games that don't need it? Like the old ultima games for example.

Hmmm, Will see, will see..... especially considering the fact that they failed to even port W1 to Xbox 360 years ago. Oh and yeah things like Investigation quest line, the entire Chapter 4, Alchemy system and OST are by FAR and I do mean BY FAR the best things in all the WITCHER games. Also let me guess, no more isometric view or sex cards.

Could benefit from a remake that adds content missing in the original.

Witcher 1 isn't a particularly good game if just looking at the individual parts I think (though some of it is good, like the Alchemy system, the use of books etc). It's also very janky in some ways, not just in terms of gameplay but aspects of presentation and story/dialogue as well.

So on the surface there'd be plenty to improve and fix.

But it's also a game that has such a strong identity and atmosphere. I couldn't stand The Witcher 1 when I first played it but it has a certain something that kept making me return to it and now I kind of adore it despite it also being a very annoying game to play at times.

But again, it has that certain something. For me, easily the best "fairytale meets fantasy meets horror meets grimdark" mix of the games, even if they all have those elements. The soundtrack is phenomenal. Some of the areas are still really beautiful to me, and it boggles my mind that they were made in the aurora engine. The art direction of the environments is just so good.
And I'm sure they will manage to suck that certain something from the game in order to make it more palatable for the "Witcher 3 generation".

But most of all...

Another remake. Yay. What fun.

Hopefully its isometric. Witcher 1 was made to played in isometric mode, the tacked on 3rd person camera sucked and didnt fit in with the combat or gameplay at all.

I loved Witcher 1 combat, they should keep it and instead build it around a specialised controller for the remake

Predictions:
  • They won't just remove the cards but also the casual milkmaid shagging
  • Obligatory woke diversity injection
  • They will somehow make combat worse
  • They will fuckup alchemy
  • Even less of an RPG than original
  • Same retarded loot/leveling system of W3/CP2077
  • Quest design/art-direction/plot/character interactions will be worse
  • As broken as CP2077 on release
  • Will be a shameless cash-grab
I expect at least 6 out of 9 of these. :negative:

Nah. I loved first Bitcher when it came out but playing on hard, without the crosshair fiery sword indicating you're supposed to click again, would probably make me drop the game.
Isn't that hard, there's an audio cue when the combos end, not to mention the visual information you get from the animations.
W1 had:
-best music in the series
-best alchemy system
-interesting quest design, especially the chapter spanning investigation in Act 2
-amazing atmosphere
-best story in the series

And you can bet they'll fuck all these things up in the remake. Some characters will turn black or LGBT, quest markers will be everywhere, the act 2 investigation will be overly simplified. At the same time, they'll probably ignore the bad parts of the original, like poor itemization and annoying enemy design.
Poor itemization? You mean the best itemization? No carrying around 50 looted swords. Now it will be flooded with shit like W2&3 were.
You can add -best combat animations to that list as well, though most of the retarded W3 fanbase never plays long enough to see them.

You’re right, there are visual and audio cues. But I also remember constantly missing certain combos as the cues are slightly misaligned or the window of opportunity was smaller than for the others.
Can’t remember exactly. I just know it was frustrating constantly missing the opportunity from 2nd to 3rd combo.

TW1 combat > TW3's at the hardest difficulty

TW3 is just mindless button mashing because difficulty is extremely easy. No need to improve skills, or make oils and potions. Just get it over with.

TW1 at least makes you pay attention to timing your swings, and there's the whole preparation aspect that makes it all interesting. You have to research first, choose your oils and potions carefully, and it has a significant impact on combat effectiveness. Felt much more strategical than TW3's dumbed-down retardation.

Ironically, they will screw up Geralt's face all over again; like CDProjekt did in Witcher 2 & 3.

They will screw up the camera setup as well; discarding the ISO/3D style —which is (of course) the only way I play the game; also the only way you can have him jump during combat.

Combat... Combat was superb, and the first thing that actually impressed me about it; utterly ruined in the sequels—especially when they made Geralt lose his pragmatism, and kneel in the mud to take potions. They will screw that up royally in the remake. :(
