Silent Hill 4 The Room: two hours in and I already like it more than SH3 story-wise. However, having to fuckign backtrack to the room is ridiculous. Further compounding this pile of shit is the fact that you have to backtrack to store/retrieve items. LOADING SCREENS EVERYWHERE

Finished Chasm: The Rift. Strange feeling. Decade later someone remind you about the game, you find prepared build* and finish the game fast.
Wandering around labyrints was painful in 2nd act (Egypt) but later it wasn't an issue. Last episode was rather straighforward. And last boss was ripoff of the Quake final boss. Except the shitty performance combined with constant earthquake (lol) to show how impressive this boss was. It wasn't. It's over. At last.
Maybe try the bonus levels. But later. Or never.

*and further improvements do nothing or broke thing.

Just finished level 11 in Star Wars: Dark Forces 2. Pretty great FPS as far as 90's/00's FPS games go, but the door locks and the like always kill me in the end. I don't think any game with this design in mind can't feel repetitive at least a little bit, and the same is true for this game. I really like using the lightsaber and watching the FMV's though.

I'm also playing a bit of Divine Divinity, I'm like level 20 now, and I haven't even really explored the town or the dark forest. One gripe I have about this game is that some quests usually have this gap to them. Sometimes you'll find something and only until way later will you discover what to do with it or who to find/kill. The world itself is fun to explore, so I guess that's the point, but it is a bit annoying.

I gave up on the The Dig. Fucking game has too many trial and error or unsensical puzzles. I'm too old for this shit.

Just use a walkthrough and enjoy the music (you faggot).

I don't remember much in the way of nonsensical puzzles in it, it was a pretty cool game. Of course people tend to remember good things more and forget bad things.

Topic: DOTA 2, FTL, Binding of Isaac Rebirth, Sunless Sea, Don't Starve. Rogue-lites ftw.

I recommend going through it with a walkthrough open 24/7 just to see the story to the end. I know I did.

The Dig's puzzle design is absolutely atrocious, but it's one of the only games that manage to craft a truly alien world, and its backstory and atmosphere are excellent to boot.

Yeah, I had to do that. But looking at walkthroughs most of the time takes me out of the mood completely (and reminds me how much I suck, although it is nice to hear that it is not only me who thinks that the puzzle design is not very good). I was OK until I was doing stuff at the asteroid, but after arriving at the alien world, and entering the nexus, I encountered one puzzle after the next which left me scratching my head. Hell, if I have to look up the puzzles constantly, I might as well look at it on Youtube.

Silent Hill 4: it's not a piece of shit, but it sure smells like it. horrible backtracking, invetory system sucks ass. however, the story is better than 3's (not saying much), monsters were a step down (minus the twin baby thing), nice variety in levels, excellent music, great art and otherworld sections as always.

Now on to Shattered Memories

I guess following the majestic expereince I had with Silent Hill 2, I was hoping for the same with 3 and 4. 3 felt like the safest entry in the series. It checked all the boxes. It was what I expected, gameplay wise, but the story was a huge letdown. However, the music, the tone, the art, the oppresiveness of the otherworld was harrowing. Silent Hill 4 was the experimental one. What I hated most about it was the inventory syste. Basically you have to travel back to the same hub to dump/retrieve items (of which you can only carry ten and they don't stack). This probably takes up 1 hour of your playtime. The game has fewer puzzles but they're well done. The monsters were the weakest in this entry. I like how focused the story is on its antagonist, who is a victim really, and it's interesting to see that you're encountering his demons in the otherworld. Henry is more of a blank slate, which makes him the weakest character. The star of 4 is easily Walter Sullivan. Now onto some favorite moments:

This screenshot constitutes one of my favorite moments of the entire series. Next to the wheelchair is an elevator with a gaping hole. You dread getting closer to it, fearing something is going to come at you. But nothing does.

The storeroom is another fantastic example of the horror that typifies the series.

Silent Hill 4 has good backtracking (run through the same levels but encoutnering new problems. The escort mission does get tiresome, but not as much as having to go back and forth to the hub. I loved this little moment from the hospital world. Again, I love how the series gives you the space to interpret without having the need to attack everything.

Love this tune from the final part of 4

All in all I really enjoyed them, in spite of the clunky combat, in spite of 4's asinine inventory system. Looking forward to the non-Team Silent outings.

Alien: Isolation. I don't even enjoy horror games all that much, but this game's art-direction and atmosphere are so good, that it keeps me playing despite going chicken-shit most of the time. So good.

I continued the game because I'm interested in the story, and it really has a great atmosphere, soundtrack. But Jesus lots of puzzles suck. Just a recent example. I had to pry open a panel to reach the wires underneath. I thought the only logical solution would be to pry it open with a shovel. Because you know the end of the shovel is thin and you can pry open stuff with it. But oh no, you have to pry it open with a piece of bone, a tusk.

I won't lie, Mr., I played that game with no guide and never had any problems; in fact I remember the puzzles being pretty good. But hey.

Also you gotta remember, a lot of these games were made when there were no guides. What you were supposed to do was either call the helpline, or, if you were poor or your country didn't have one or you pirated the game, go to sleep or take a shower or mow the lawn while the solution pops into your head while doing something unrelated. That's what adventure games have in common with koans and difficult math proofs.

I tried to like this game, but one major problem, the alien stomps around. You can hear it a mile away. One reason it's so scary in the films is that it's totally silent, it sneaks up on you, or is just sitting there 5 feet away and you don't even notice it. That to me is far more scary than some big bear stomping around and growling. Completely broke my immershuns.

So now I'm playing:

:popamole:

Diablo III
Swords and Potions 2
The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot

(I realize that my current game list invalidates my opinion about anything game related, carry on)

Never think that. To be a decent game critic and develop good taste one must play all kinds of games.

Also, I doubt you'd be playing Diablo 3 if you didn't think it was a good game. (Which it is. Seriously- it's fun.)

Well the alien isn't always like that. I'm still early on in the game (at the medical facility, of which I've read is p. much the creepiest the game gets), but for example in a previous level you mainly have to deal with avoiding the androids, while the alien lurks solely in the upper shafts, its saliva dripping from shaft-holes as it skulks around. I understand completely what you're saying, I do believe that the alien's best rendition is in the first motion picture where, thanks to it being most of the time unseen, said alien remains a whole lot more menacing/undecipherable. Giger's design is pretty fucking terrifying, but it works best when we're shown only bits of it, with the rest covered in shadow.
That having been said, I think that A:I does a pretty good job to avoid the 'Waaaah the alien just pops-up and instakills me/git gut faggot' crowd and appease the 'I want my alien kept to the singular form, fuck Cameron' crowd. A true rendition of it in videogame format seems nigh-impossible to me.

Yup, Cameron did his best to maintain this in the 2nd film too. Refer to the 'maybe they don't show up on infrared at all' view-pan and it's part of the wall right in front of her. Straight out of a Giger panel. They also couldn't hear 30+ of them 'crawling' upside down in the ceiling not 5 meters from them.

It may just be a huge personal pet peave, but I think that was a big mistake in the game. Although, I'm not sure how you give the player information of any kind that can be used strategically that wouldn't create the same problem.
