So far the release of the new Sim City appears to be a trainwreck. DRM stopping paying customers from playing, those that play being appalled by the tiny city size, apparant missing content and percieved decline of the series compared to earlier installments. Meanwhile the press is gushing about it. Fucking doritos man.

Hmm, except Slate isn't the "gaming press". It's a general news and opinions site.

Really, this whole practice of reviewers reviewing games ahead of time using release candidates that have no actual resemblance to the released game should probably go by the wayside. I'd rather read a review of someone actually playing said released game _after_ it's released, than something written while playing on empty servers before the game is out. Early-access for reviews is fucking meaningless if those reviews tell you nothing about what your game experience will be like.

It feels like at this point commercial reviews serve two parties: the reviewers, and the companies. The actual consumers get fuck all out of it, mostly. Might as well just not bother publishing reviews at all, and just say: "Whatever this game is called, you should buy it!"

Yeah, I was more alluding to the image and found that article to perfectly show the difference between the reactions from the press and actual players.
To be fair, the user score is not representing the quality of the game, it is representing EA's shitty DRM policy. That's why it is full of 0/10s.

Yup, way too many "luls always online, 0/10" votes in there obviously.

Game might be awesome (protip: it's not) but if you don't get to play it it's not worth a damn.

Obviously. Still, the rating do not represent the game (when it works).

Also, realistically the DRM is part of the game. If a Ferrari randomly locked you inside of it when you tried to get out, people wouldn't give the car a pass and say, "Oh, it's great, other than the locks! That's not its fault!"

You can always acquire universal key to both.... Seriously how after such story anybody buys EA games? Is Cleve Right and people are bunch of moron sapiens without the will and ability to think for themselves? Not to mention SC4 is much better Sim game.

Seriously, who would play SimCity, when you have a much superior alternative? I understand if someone gives it a spin, s/he might even like it. But if someone is into city building, why would you settle anything less, then SC4? Especially with all the mods available for that game. I'm not even sure if the new game will be moddable.

From a few comments I read about the new one, it seems to have similar traffic problems to what SC4 used to have - traffic jams at overused roads, while free highways parallel to it get ignored.

Well, if any of you guys bought this and want your money back, EA is apparently offering refunds.

My god, they are such a losers. Who would not see that coming, why put yourself in a position like that? Are they just killing games on purpose? Why shoot yourself in a foot like that? Just let people play single player, and offer them server play and LAN play as options. Is it that hard to figure out?
What a bunch of shitheads. Marketing professionals my ass.

It's like they are actually trying to be the first truly Evil Corporation in human history.

No they don't! Because being evil, and even more, being Evil Corporation, requers at least an above average Intelligence! They are actually making true Evil look bad.

Yeah, after watching Giant Bomb's QL for this, I knew this was a PASS. No way am I spending money on this.

We should have a SC4 mod thread or something to get some incline going...

The more and more I read about this... the angrier I get.

Hold on now, it is still a video game, and it's not like I can't go play other and better games - that's not why I'm angry.

I feel like I'm having a flashback to MOO3 or something.

"Let's take everything people enjoyed doing in our video game series... remove it or change it, oh and also make the cities a FRACTION of the size they used to be! Hmmm, what else can we do to REALLY drive this into the ground? Oh I know, how about always on DRM aaaaaand we'll make sure the servers are a bunch of junk so that people won't be able to play the game anyway. Don't forget to send out those checks to the reviewers though..."

They could have done something really great. I admit that when I saw one of the earliest videos where they were making casinos I was excited, at last I thought, I can make the sleaziest most libertarian city in the world. Nope.

I'm just glad that I saw it coming.

I mean, I'm not glad that it's bad or nothing, but I already prepared myself for disappointment.

Well, time to load up Simcity 4 again...
