The map traversal looks butt ugly and the same ol shitty repetetive combat system for 5k encounters? Struggling to care about SaGa games when fucking mario party games boards are far superior in quality then sagas maps and gameplay has more depth.

Very excited. Hope they can keep the bugs to a minimum - those really took a bit of shine off Scarlet Grace which I otherwise mostly loved.

Is this like SaGa Scarlet?
I liked the battle system in it but the world and story was shallow as fuck.
I hope they improve on this.

I like the character designs. Just hope that they are able to do something more with it than make it a 1 for 1 copy of Scarlet Grace. I enjoyed it but I like the series more when it's doing wildly different things rather than straight up "sequels".

Which SaGa game should I buy? RS2, RS3, MS or Frontier?

No experience with the series. Is RS3 the most welcoming of them all?

The prospect of being completely lost and aimless in a big ass world seems annoying at best but I really want a new jRPG to play and I've played just about everything already.

My personal recomnendation for a newcomer to the series will always be Romancing SaGa 3.

It's the easiest one to get into, imo.

I recommend SaGa Frontier 2.
Easy to follow, has a linear story. Difficulty is fine for the most part.
Romancing SaGa 3 is the only Saga game I hate lol

I think 2 or 3 are both excellent starting points. If you play 2, my only word of advice is to make sure to get your magic research facility up and running as soon as possible, with healing magic being top priority. The best healing spell is essentially a requirement for the final boss fight.

Frontier is my personal favourite. There are 7 (8 for steam version?) different characters/storylines, with a wide range from handholding 'here's your next mission, you aren't allowed to go anywhere else' to 'do literally whatever the fuck you want, we forgot to give this character any storyline at all'. The systems are pretty interesting, with a combination of intuitiveness and esoteric clusterfuck that keep things from being either too simple or too complex when it comes to making choices. And the setting is just rad. Pocket dimensions ranging from ancient magical ruins or wilderness to cyberpunk dystopia.

Shit, I don't think I've ever managed to get hyped by like 5 seconds of gameplay footage before. I hope it's as good as it looks. I actually kinda like some of those character designs too. I've been meaning to play some of the other recent entries in the series but the 3D bobblehead stuff so.... ugh. Couldn't bring myself to play scarlet either, all the characters look like they belong in a gay pride parade or something. Nice to see slightly more grounded character designs. And Kenji Ito as sole credit for composer? Fuck yeah.

Tomomi Kobayashi will be sorely missed as concept artist in this entry (I wonder why she's not working on it), but I am impressed with Sotoshi Kurmochi's work on this so far.

Got drunk and bought Minstrel Song. Let's see what happens.
Awesome game, but maybe one of the more difficult as an entry to the series.

I'm curious though, why you chose not to follow any of our recommendations?

Ultimately Minstrel Song was the most aesthetically pleasing game with the most QoL features added in, or at least that's how it seemed to me.

Did they ever fix the input lag in RS2/3?

Well which character did you pick? (don't say Albert)
Gray (he's just like me)

I sold some dinosaur eggs for 5k after initially getting ran down by them on my first try. However, while fighting some other monsters I accidentally retreated from the fight and noticed they despawned. Apparently that worked on the dinos so I just despawned all of them and ran away with the eggs.

Fought and killed some cultists in the city sewers trying to sacrifice a little girl. Emperor asked me what reward I wanted and I ended up picking armor - not sure if that was the right choice.

Now I'm not sure where to go next, just gonna wander outside the city and see what's happening.

I only tried one of the SaGa games on PSX I think it was. Bounced off it hard. What's the draw to this series? Other than art by Sami Kamurocho or whatever.
Most SaGas allow you to do scenarios in whatever order you feel like. Some of them have a board gamey feel to them. Others have many different types of eras/periods/genres, like fantasy, cyberpunk, blahblahblah in the same game. All of them offer a challenge. Music is great in all games. Combat is fun, and seeing your characters develop is nice. The skill sparking gives you a dopamine kick (lol). They are also obtuse as fuck, and you'll have to figure out a lot of shit on your own. This puts off a lot of people, while I love it. They're a blend of jrpg and crpg, in my opinion.
