That's call shitty area game design.There should be consequences if the party is not being careful and just go rushing through the front door assaulting the temple. They should be fucking ass raped. Period. (However, see below).

The technology exists to make CRPGs work the same way, the devs are generally just too lazy to deal with these issues.

It's not an issue of being lazy, it's more of a balance of appealing to your customers.

Modders are about the only people who can take better and fuller advantage of this and incorporate them into a game. (See The Realm Series).
