The worst part about people like this:
a) They think they are being clever. As if people don't see right through them.

Keep an eye on his other forum posts (easy as fuck to find) wouldnt surprise me if some people do fall for it

Asking the Codex to take your survey seems like a surefire way to skew the results.

Raid Failed. plz try again.

Fellow Gamers,

I see I've made many friends.

Thank you for your passionate contributions.

Coyote,

Yes, it may be a surefire way to skew results, but its an essential piece of the gaming experience, to figure out what makes the griefers work, and why they do it... in a social game like an MMO, MUD or forum for that matter, some people just have to go out and show their feathers. Call me masochistic, but the segment fascinates me such that I refuse to play non PvP environments. Why do you think it skews the results? The other way I look at it is that this section is the most passionate and in fact are the leaders in the entire segment. Where they go, they lead the market. They did it from title to title through the ages, and continue to do so all the way up to EVE today, who wouldn't have a following if they weren't so fanatic, in a good way.

DakaSha, Destroid, J1M, Esxcidium, waywardOne, xemous,

You found my background info! Great Job. Now you'll have to level up your professional levels if you ever want me to talk about some real gaming mechanics.

You just haven't earned it yet.

Lvl up dudes...

Zed & Metro,

I empathize with that sentiment, and thats why I'm asking, and I mean to challenge the establishment on it. Think about it with a little more perspective, and remove your hardware bias a moment, because I promise you I actually shared it up to a point.
(Remember, globaly more smartphones will sell than desktops next year. So why shouldn't it become a platform?)

Did you buy a console to play games on your TV?
Did you buy a computer to play RPG games when Zork came out, or Betrayal from Krondor? UO, AO, AC, Bioware games, or Morrowind? C&C etc.
How many hours did you waste in college playing MUDs?
How many hours did you really play games? Be truthful...

I spent hundreds of $ to play, before I was in college. And then Thousands afterwards.. And I worked for the money. What did you do?

So if you spent your 1980's or 1970's or even 1990's money on Hardware to play a game, might you buy a Smartphone to play all the times you couldn't sit in front of the TV or Computer to play? Seriously, just to play for even 5 min anytime you wanted? Travel a lot? Commute to work? Etc. And then when you had the time you could devote more time to a session.

Metro,
Why are phones reviled? Is it the quality of the games? What is it the lack of? Please explain, because it needs to be understood.

I know there are some people who just won't sucumb to a change like this. But people stopped playing Pen and Paper RP Sessions, and moved to the Console or Computer and THAT was a big change. What are the challenges with moving to a new platform in your opinion?

Krraloth,

Ah. Yes, it was thrown together, and even had a glaring typo for a few hours, but you have to start somewhere. Be confident their quality will improve.

I have a series of game mechanics planned already. What I'm attempting to divine, is what size is the market segment I'm going to attract to the format. I know there are some significant barriers and opinions blocking the transition from PC to handset due to size, graphics quality, functionality, etc. Add to that that survey monkey only lets the cheap bastards like myself ask 10 initial questions... but hey, we're all humble when we first start new things.

So, how can I morph these answers into game mechanics? I'm sorry, but the other participants on the forum have ruined your chances at me talking about mechanics, just now. Raid wiped. Time to regear and try again. eh? (But you can always pm me)

We know that there are certain personalities that play MMO's and that the psychology of MUDs has covered this ground before. Read some Ralph Koster, he has a great blog and web site if you are interested. The point being, that I'm using some characterizations of the gaming community and validating some of it, with a twist on my assumption that MMO producers have lost a significant segment of the market, to maturing players, lack of content, repetitive game play etc... it needs something new.

On Money; In order to pitch an idea to the investor community you have to know something about money, and back it with a functional prototype or real traction in the market. While it may be anathema to the community that someone would want to try to make money on them.... its reality. So, this is my invitation to the communities that I think should have a voice in what form that game might take. Participate. (Or at least vote for your next president.) You are influential, and people would listen to you if they were wise.

Having said that why don't you tell me what you think makes MMO's fun, without me trying to put words in your mouth. And don't worry that I'm hoping to delusively allure you with my unrevealing marketese jargon speak. At least not yet, so lets have some honest conversation.

And I think I can handle it... since I've already found rock bottom on this forum, eh?

1) PvP without consequences is carebear, and cannot be hardcore.

see: UO

2) PvP cannot be meaningful unless it is determined by the skill of the player, and to a minor degree the skill of the character.

gear cannot play anything but a minor role in your game

3) for PvE, all of the above goes out the window.

Not sure mate, you should check General discussion and Retardo land. Then come back and tell us what you saw at the bottom.

If in fact you aren't a troll and are in fact are who you say, it might interest you that at this very moment a member of this forum is currently threatening to associate another esteemed member with child pornography for the simple crime of letting his real name slip (and nothing else). Don't mind the fact that he's banned, he'll be back. As a slimeball marketing type, I can assure you you'll find less sympathy than our dear sodomite friend Trash should a similar threat befall you.

"I'm passionate about game mechanics and making MMO environments more dynamic, engaging, and real. The future of the MMO is on the SmartPhone."

So why is none of your survey actually about game play mechanics in the slightest bit?
The point about it being on a smartphone is a bit off putting. The only type of mmo I can see working on a smart phone is one like farmville in that it allows you to log on for short amounts of time and then log off until an action has completed. I sincerely doubt any even moderately complicated and engaging mmo could function on a smart phone given their innate limitations.

Heh that was my first argument i think. Its so fucking obvious where the guys 'passion' lies based on that survey alone.
Read his other shit and its worth a bunch of lol.

Btw one of you guys (i still cant remember your fucking nicks) pointed out how after being exposed he still thinks he can fool us.
Look at his last post. Hes still at it haha

Hey look, I predicted the future by using information from past events. It's like conversing with a Turing machine:

Wow. Why does someone in their mid-thirties who fancies themselves the CEO and lead game designer of an imaginary marketing firm feel the need to talk this way? Did our logically constructed arguments identifying you as a marketing shill ring true? Surely a CEO could simply refute a baseless argument from people so far beneath him with logic or evidence.

Yes, I'm sure your undergrad degree in Politics and decade of work experience as a computer help desk technician has kept you closely in touch with the investor community. There are also no real-world examples of a small group of people producing a quality product with innovative ideas that leads to commercial success based on the merit of the game. It's always about marketing and finding or manufacturing consumer trends!

Irony: Portal 2 is released today to massive commercial success. A few years ago Portal is created because Valve thinks the gameplay mechanics shown in the indie game made by a group of students merit hiring all of them and putting them in charge of a high profile game project.

This forum is not the bottom of the barrel. It is a prestigious magazine where everyone is taken at face value. The only reason we are not currently discussing game mechanics is because you have presented nothing worth discussing. All you presented was a thinly veiled attempt to coerce people into completing a survey and so that is what this thread is about.

I have a series of game mechanics planned already.

besides my expertise with Google search, i'm going to surmise that either English isn't your native language or you are just abysmally clueless about the topic you've chosen to talk about.

for someone who claims years of experience with PvP, your trash talk is weak as shit.

seriously, there must be a retail sales position available at an Apple store somewhere. take it.

I don't think successful trolls often end with having a codex thread permanently tied to your real name in an internet search.

But hey, I'm sure Thomas G. Hale knows what he's doing. He's been at this for almost three weeks:

http://tsrhale.tumblr.com/post/4397036227/startups-time

Founding a startup, isn’t a bed and breakfast. It needs action, and the actionable things you need to focus on are:
1. Code. Code. Code.
2. Code until you have a prototype.
3. Code until you have a Beta
You can’t move very far forward on an idea is what I’ve read.
So, if you know how to code, then code. If you don’t know how to code, then you better start learning.
It's not like we don't have a dozen threads a year here on this very subject. We don't have people that have tried it, are currently trying it, or have watched it all come falling down among our posters. We don't have full-time developers that contribute to this forum. Thomas G. Hale is here to teach us these things.

DakaSha.... dude chill. Marketing is important, before you build a game. You MUST know the target audience.
True dat. Which is why surveying the codexers is so important...
