Outside of the usual time-sink RPGs and *maybe* San Andreas, Saints Row 2 is probably my most played game ever. Shame what direction they went 3 onwards.

Pre-load available. Thank Andhaira for that, since I'm running a potato speed net. 40.6GB in case anyone wanted to know.

And now, you can get back to talking about Saints Row and GTA.

Saint's row 3 was really fun, saint's row 4 is a pretty fun superhero game for about 10 hours. 2 looks like a shitty version of San Andreas.

Off topic. We really need to get back on topic

do you think this game will open people's eyes to BLM message? The cops really do seem trigger happy against the black protagonist. How many reviews do you think will alert to that?

And how difficult and challenging was saint's row with all that shit implemented? Even less than GTA. This should give you a clue you brainless skull.

Compared to which one? 5? The GTA where everyone has the durability of a hardy paper towel and cops know what you did to that hiker on top of Mt. Chilliad?

any GTA. GTA V cops are aggressive by design.

Using IV as an example, maybe at base levels when there are only a couple as opposition. They take better cover and some may even have armor. When your gang and Wanted levels are up? Not a chance. GTA IV tried to keep it more realistic when it came to the amount of people you'd fight at any one time. Saints Row's gangs would show up en masse and sometimes dogpile each other just trying to get to you. Their specialists showed up far more often, and third parties (gang or police) had a decent chance of stumbling upon the scene and turning it into an outright warzone. Even some of the later Mayhem missions where they specifically armed you for crowd control were nearly impossible because of that. Some story missions it really was better to try and keep escalation to a minimum because the game can do it better than you.

GTAs previous to that were cartoony enough that they probably would have tried the same thing, but didn't have the hardware for it. Point of fact Saints Row's system seems based on the memes of the 3D Era GTAs, like the insane cops. Puffed up and taken to a ridiculous conclusion.

Scarface: The World is Yours had a relentless gang and police system, too. If you didn't make it a point to bribe and smooth talk it became practically impossible to run missions or get anywhere. You had to be careful.

Never played the saints row before 3 but 3 & 4 didn't have cops like you mentioned. They got progressively more dangerous but were just fodder for op weapons.

And therein lies the problem with that reasoning. It's based on the game that started the :decline: in the series. Difficulty? Well no shit it's eventually not difficult when your character can be upgraded as immune to bullets, explosions, fire and lasers. I once posted a series of pictures here showing one walking through a force of VTOLs, Tanks and Super Clones whistling merrily. SR III was followed by Cheat Codes: The Game. Otherwise known as SR IV.

There's a reason a divide formed in the fanbase.

I remember part of a review from Saints Row IV's release; (paraphrasing) "The vehicle customization is the best it's ever been in the series. The radio stations are bursting with music to bop your head to. Too bad 95% of the people who play this game will experience about five minutes of it before turning into Superman and never looking back."

They're good for what they are. I had a pretty fun no-powers run in IV, with minimal use of Ice Blast to make Hunters vulnerable. All those jumping challenges solved in a couple minutes with a helicopter, got around using a modded out Attrazione, improved my follower abilities and solved everything with a kitted out gang. I recommend having just about every other companion ride in a vehicle with Julius at least once.

Not really, taking Saints Row 2 as an example (still by far the best game in the series) the city in which the game takes place (Stilwater) is designed with such an amazing level of detail, it really nails the living, breathing world/city arguably better than any other game of the same genre (and beyond), each city district feels distinct (after the playing the game for a while, everytime you load it you can know in which district you are without opening the map), it has a wide variety of pedestrians going about their daily routines, complex locations that are fun to explore that barely have any (in some cases none at all) ties to the main quest, well designed gangs etc. the amount of care that was put into creating various different parts of Stilwater and putting all those pieces together to create a believable city very much fits the definition of quality over quantity (not the other way around) as far as I'm concerned.

Furthermore, the game also combines zany elements (most of the hilarious side-activities) with a pretty dark main storyline with some expertise that the game doesn't come off as a disjointed mess in the process, it somehow all manages to fit together. It also took a chance with the main protagonist (whose personality was significantly watered down in the sequels) being an actual violent psychopath that is largely as unsympathetic and brutal in his methods as the gangs he fights for the control of the city, that's quite a rare feature even for games where you play as a criminal (you usually have a legit excuse, are a victim of the circumstances, quite clearly the lesser evil etc.).

2 looks like a shitty version of San Andreas.

To a pleb maybe.

Why? Off topic discussions in this thread are far more entertaining than yet another AAA excrement that is slavish to modern gaming and political trends with no original thought of its own. It's unfortunate that the game which has only superficial similarity to the genuinely great original is gonna be official part of the series but that's the way it goes, Mafia 2 was already a big let-down anyway.

How brave, original and thought-provoking. Gunning down white supremacists is a definite novelty in the shooting genre.
