For what it's worth, there's a manual (in digital form, obviously) on the CD. I had the same reservations, though, and asked around a few places on the internet to see if anyone knew where to buy a boxed copy . . . no luck.
Well there is a copy with a box and the disks but nothing else on Amazon for $30.00. There is also a full collector's edition on Amazon for $90.00 which appears to have everything intact and in mint condition. Worse scenario - I found the PDF version of the manual for download at Replacement Docs. That means I should be good to go either way at this point as long as the disks themselves are good regardless of whether or not they have the PDF manual on them.

What kind of copy protection are we looking at? Does the game require that the CD be in the drive when you play? If so, is there a crack? I'll be playing this on my laptop and I hate to lug disks around. Perhaps with a game this old, an bin/cue image and Daemon Tools will suffice.

So I got my amazon CDs in the mail today. I installed the game on Vista with UAC turned off. I can't get the intro to play without the game crashing on me. Any ideas? How are you guys who are playing, playing the game? I presume most of you are using XP, so what special things had to be done to get this sucker running?

To get the game to work with XP, you might want to check this very useful thread

Now, the update.

WW153.jpg

In a chest we find this statuette, which reminds us of the monkey paintings we saw earlier. Let's go there !

WW155.jpg

Let's put it there and see if something happens.

WW156.jpg

Yes ! This formerly collapsed stairway is now usable. It leads us to...

WW157.jpg

...a red alcove containing a treasure chest...

WW158.jpg

...a yellow alcove containing another treasure chest...

WW159.jpg

...and finally, a purple alcove with yet another treasure chest...

We loot all three and in the yellow one we find...

WW160.jpg

The ashes of Anephas ! Bingo !

WW161.jpg

Here is the holy altar where you have to place the ashes.

WW162.jpg

We place the urn on the shrine, and totally fail to notice the mummy, coming out of the corridor in front of us. The spell that she will cast a second later will be a complete surprise.

WW163.jpg

Now, we have to bring light on the ashes. The altar is the green flag on the map, and the source of holy light is the blue flag. The little red "stuff" near the green flag is our party. Quite a way. Let's go to that "ray of light".

WW179.jpg

First, let's use the obelisk of light on this pedestal...

WW180.jpg

Yup. The ray is refracted...

WW181.jpg

...right into nowhere.

WW164.jpg

So we have to grab one of those nice decorating obelisks...

WW165.jpg

... and move it in the corridors.

WW182.jpg

Right to the perfect spot, where it will deflect the ray of light. Like here.

This operation must be repeated many times, since there are many twists to the "path of light".

WW183.jpg

And you keep on bumping into unfriendlies, while doing all this carrying around.

WW184.jpg

Eventually you create a path of light all the way to the holy altar.

WW185.jpg

Which brings Anephas back fom the dead. "As if by magic", yeah right.

WW187.jpg

As soon as he is awake, he says that he won't be strong enough on his own. We can feel it coming...

WW188.jpg

Here we go. Nice way to unload your duties on someone else. Alright... we'll do it.

WW191.jpg

Well, now we know what to do next. Get the tablets from the sunken city, to gain entry to the desert pyramid of the evil pharaoh. And kick his ass. Neat.

WW192.jpg

Anephas' comeback has opened another way out of the shrine. We will use it, since we went everywhere else.

WW193.jpg

Convenient thieves let this 100% functioning lift.

WW194.jpg

We exit in a new country.

WW195.jpg

The legendary Bloodbeard, of whom we heard a lot, is here to "greet" us.

WW197.jpg

He really has many men with him.

WW198.jpg

Let's "firestorm" their sorry asses.

WW199.jpg

It sure works wonders.

WW200.jpg

Not so proud anymore, mister pirate.

WW201.jpg

He was not a difficult foe. But he still has his own "description" when he dies.

WW202.jpg

And his own sword. Nice weapon for the assassin.

WW203.jpg

And even his own boat, that we will now use to explore this new part of the world.

So thanks captain Bloodbeard. We will venture into this new territory next update.

WW189.jpg

Special screenshot of the day : very dumb question.

That was the only time when that game sucked bad. Like, who in the nine hells, is ever gonna say "NO" at this point in the game ? This is the only example of "I don't offer real C&C, but boy, do I pretend to" that I encountered but it really pissed me off. To the point that I didn't even do a save to see what happens when you answer "NO". Which is damn stupid I know, but I was pissed.

Using Bloodbeard's boat we travel around some...

WW204.jpg

Exploring around, we encounter those nasty bugs.

WW205.jpg

An altar, probably related to a quest, but not any of ours.

WW207.jpg

An important samourai. Easily killed. A magic sword is stuck in the big rock behind, a la Excalibur, and we needed it for a dojo quest.

WW208.jpg

This hydra looks fierce...

WW209.jpg

...but was not that tough. Killing it completes a town hall quest.

WW210.jpg

This cart reminds us of the treasure. Let's see...

WW18.jpg

We have no idea what a beat is, but we don't give a flying fuck. It's high time for some underwater action. Check the ridiculous look of the party members with their scuba gear. Also a good show of how tough they are, statistics-wise.

WW217.jpg

WW218.jpg

WW219.jpg

WW220.jpg

WW221.jpg

WW222.jpg

Cool, no ? Let's dive !

WW223.jpg

We arrive straight onto this building.

WW224.jpg

In case we had not guessed, the game narrator confirms it, we have found the underwater city.

WW225.jpg

Before trying to enter the buildings we look for the treasure.

WW226.jpg

We find those chests, that must be it.

WW227.jpg

Gold bars ! Gems ! Bingo !

WW228.jpg

A rather disapointing item, considering its name and location in the late game.

WW229.jpg

This looks like an entrance.

WW232.jpg

Indeed ! A dungeon lever !

WW233.jpg

The underwater corridor leads us to...

WW234.jpg

This Cthulhu-like and totally closed door. This is not the entry.

Let's get out and try the big building we saw earlier.

WW231.jpg

The main door is another Cthulhu door, what is this city ? R'lyeh ? Also, Volourn discovers that fire spells fizzle underwater.

Anyway, this is not the entry either.

WW235.jpg

A hole ! Under the building.

WW236.jpg

It first leads us inside the building. Nothing interesting here.

WW237.jpg

The passage continues to this dungeon lever.

WW238.jpg

Inside the sunken city. At last.

WW239.jpg

Precious pockets of air cand be found here and there, so we can replenish our oxygen tanks.

WW240.jpg

We meet a shy mermaid. Jasede, ever the gentleman, is about to answer no.

WW241.jpg

Even then, she is still afraid of him. Probably due to the mask. Yeah, probably. So we switch to the official team speaker, Ladonna. Who has an even more frightening look.

WW242.jpg

The mermaid tells us to see a mysterious oracle, if we wish to learn more about the tablets we came to find.

WW243.jpg

She offers to show the way, but we block her path, that one made me laugh out loud. Anyway, we move aside...

WW244.jpg

She opens the sewers, the way to the oracle, and gives us a key/gem that could be useful to navigate the city. We will visite the sewers later, let us wander the corridors first.

WW245.jpg

More mermaids.

WW246.jpg

More pockets of air.

WW247.jpg

Chests can be anywhere here. Like under the ceiling.

WW248.jpg

This lock looks like it fits the gem.

WW249.jpg

This is the gem. It indeed opens the door, which leads to a rotating room. Nothing really "visual", so no screens. An annoying "action" part, let's just skip it.

WW250.jpg

Those are tougher versions of the usual crabs.

WW251.jpg

Some parts of the city are still above water.

WW252.jpg

The text leaves us no doubt as to what is in that chest.

WW253.jpg

Indeed ! The second of the three tablets. That's one down, two to go. We sure will find the others... next update.

WW230.jpg

Anybody who is interested in this, see my torrent on TPB under my name, darkgamorck. I tried to make this as complete as possible. Alas I was not able to solve my Vista issue where the bik intro/ending movies would not play. It's not a critical issue however and an installer for RADTools (which you can use to play the movies outside the game) has been provided.

Title: Wizards and Warriors by D.W. Bradley
Released: 07/26/2008
Format: CloneCD images created with Alcohol 120%
Author: darkgamorck

Overview: This archive includes everything you need to get started
with the game. The game appears to be able to work under Vista, though
I have not been able to get the game to actually play it's intro or
ending movies under vista. RADTools.exe has been provided as it will
allow you to watch those bik movies outside of the game.

Instructions:

1) The CloneCD disc images can be mounted with Daemon Tools
or Alcohol 120/52.

2) After installing from the first and second disc, you need
to patch the game.

3) Unzip the contents of waw10b_unofficial.zip directly into your
game directory. This will patch the game to the 1.0b
version.

4) Unzip the contents of waw10b_crack.zip directly into your
game directory. The crack file has a different EXE name, so
you will not overwrite the non-cracked EXE. Can you execute
the cracked version by running deep6_crk.exe.

5) Unzip the contents of waw10b_avifix.zip into the townavi
subdirectory of the game directory. This will "fix" some of
the avi files used to interact with the different buildings in
a town. It does this by uncompressing the original versions.
This will add about 200 megs to the installed size of the game.

6) Unzip the contents of waw10b_graphicsmod.zip into the game
directory. You can run this utility to modify the resolutions
that the game is allowed to run at. The quality of your results
may vary.

7) Run the game and have fun!

Other Files:

RADTools.exe

Used to view bik movies in Vista that can't be played in game
without crashing the game. If you find a fix for this issue in
Vista, please report it in the comments for this torrent.

misc_binkw32.zip

An updated version of the library used to play bik movies. It
does nothing for me under Vista, but it may help you.

waw_faq_v01.zip

A FAQ full of Wizards and Warriors info.

waw_maps.zip

Lots of maps.

waw_save_edit.zip

A Save Game Editor

Wizards and Warriors - Manual.pdf

The manual for the game.

Of course no direct links will be provided. You'll have to search for it yourself. Shouldn't be too hard to find though I imagine.

Underwater treasures sure bring out the pirates in you guys.

WW254.jpg

We enter the city's sewers to meet this mysterious oracle.

WW255.jpg

We find the tome of water in the first chest we encounter. Only one more elemental tome to find.

WW256.jpg

Here is the oracle.

WW257.jpg

Thanks for taking that form, I sure am not frightened. Let's talk alright.

WW258.jpg

What ? She gave us a scroll and vanished. No time for talking. Girls...

WW259.jpg

Here's the scroll. Not much help here.

WW260.jpg

Exploring the sunken library, on the other hand, proves quite useful.

WW261.jpg

Looks like we found another tablet.

WW262.jpg

Yes ! Only one more to go.

WW263.jpg

Deeper into the underwater city we go.

WW264.jpg

Holy whatever ! The mother of crabs ! Just a "maxed-out hit points" version of the usual crab.

WW267.jpg

Swimming in the corridors.

WW266.jpg

We meet this stupid fish chick.

WW268.jpg

We find this cool ring.

WW265.jpg

We eventually reach this (partly) above water section of the city.

WW269.jpg

Solving a rather weird puzzle (that I spared you) opens this alcove.

WW270.jpg

It seems that we found the final tablet.

WW271.jpg

Indeed, the description text, gets richer with this third tablet.

WW272.jpg

The third, and last, tablet of Cet. We're done here.

WW274.jpg

Hey ! The stupid chick is an agent of the enemy.

WW275.jpg

She reverts to her true form. Some giant fish.

WW276.jpg

She's one of those enemies you have to fight close. She goes down easily (no pun intended, well... not really.)

WW277.jpg

This is a secret passage. City builders are not that dumb.

WW278.jpg

More crabs.

WW279.jpg

A final look at those charming mermaids...

WW280.jpg

...and back to the boat.

Before going any further we decide to explore the bottom of the sea. Since it was such a pain to get those underwater items, we might as well use them to the max.

WW283.jpg

Not much to see, some fishes...

WW285.jpg

...some crabs, where were you earlier ?

WW284.jpg

Finally ! A chest ! But it's just random loot, nothing really interesting.

Well, so much for sea exploration, let's go back to town.

WW286.jpg

We turn a Nightblade into a magic sword by the name of "Spacemoose", since he seemingly wanted to enter the game at that time but it was way too late to make him a character.

WW287.jpg

Spacemoose is now a kickass sword. We sure will use it to slice-up some mean monsters.

Next update...

WW282.jpg

Special screenshot of the day : "Alt+Tab"ing out to Windows and back, seems to upset the game engine. Nice texture for that eel !

The underwater city! Excellent.

Probably my favourite part. Glad you made it this far, I had some doubts that you would a while ago.

Oh, if only Bradley had made a faithful sequel to this game, rather than going down the path of insipid single character action RPGs.

Yeah, the underwater city was my favorite too. This game did an incredible job of making each dungeon completely unique and distinct from the others, and the underwater city is definitely a shining example of that. (On the other hand, it also did probably the worst job ever of making the towns feel distinct from each other.)

The adventure continues...

WW288.jpg

Let's venture in the desert, to find this evil pharaoh pyramid.

WW289.jpg

Desert unfriendlies.

WW294.jpg

More desert unfriendlies.

WW290.jpg

Looks like the place.

WW292.jpg

Yes, here it is.

WW293.jpg

We immediately climb on top of the pyramid, to offer you this nice view.

WW295.jpg

Now let's enter it.

WW296.jpg

This entry corridor leads to...

WW297.jpg

This closed beetle door. But as the text suggests, this might be the place to use those tablets from the sunken city.

WW298.jpg

We place the three tablets in the holes.

WW299.jpg

And the door opens.

WW300.jpg

Mummies of course. Sometimes they got the jump on us.

WW301.jpg

And sometimes we do.

WW302.jpg

Ladonna senses some sprites.

WW306.jpg

And here they are !

WW305.jpg

The pyramid is a vast egyptian-like dungeon. A cool place to visit.

WW303.jpg

It is also full of demons.

WW304.jpg

Really full of demons.

WW308.jpg

We try some spells. The sprites with the "cowled demon" icon over their heads are possessed, they fight on our side.

WW313.jpg

My God ! The pool of unspeakable holiness.

WW311.jpg

Looks like a good place to use the many empty flasks we keep on finding in every chest.

WW312.jpg

We get holy water. We fill a dozen flasks, you never know...

WW314.jpg

Some chests require a bit of jumping to be reached.

WW315.jpg

A jackal lever. Vazdru, ever the troublemaker, immediately pulls it.

WW316.jpg

Oops ! Looks like something's coming.

WW317.jpg

A demon lord...

WW318.jpg

...and his buddies. They are rather quickly disposed of. This party kicks ass.

WW319.jpg

Triggering the lever opened this alcove, containing this chest, which, in turn, contains...

WW320.jpg

...the tome of earth. We now have all four elemental books. Let's go back to town, Zen Master here we go !

WW321.jpg

This temptress from hell tries to prevent us from leaving. No way ! We kill her.

WW327.jpg

Yes ! I really would.

WW328.jpg

Ladonna is now a zen master. Best class in the game.

She, and the rest of the team, will be back for more egyptian ass-kicking... next update.

WW323.jpg

Special screenshot of the day : Trading while fighting. This centaur is about to sell the very weapon he fights us with. Greedy bastard.

Ladies and gentlemen of the Codex (as if there were any of either here) brace yourselves for the climaxing conclusion to this game !

WW329.jpg

Back in the pyramid. The library.

WW330.jpg

The black fire ! And next to it...

WW339.jpg

The old lich. We thought he was dead. He is not.

WW338.jpg

He wants us to find his heart and finally kill him. We'll see what we can do.

WW332.jpg

For now, let's recharge our "black fire powered weapons". The Mavin first.

WW333.jpg

Wow ! It sure boosted the sword. Now it lives up to its fame.

WW335.jpg

The staff of death now.

WW336.jpg

Another serious weapon.

WW343.jpg

Back to exploring the pyramid.

WW340.jpg

More demons.

WW342.jpg

Some jumping is required.

WW344.jpg

Yet more demons.

WW345.jpg

Vampiresses. They totally fail at charming us.

WW346.jpg

A unique demon.

WW347.jpg

Not really tough. He drops a "champion key" when dying.

WW348.jpg

Mummies haunt the tombs.

WW349.jpg

Another champion demon. He also drops a champion key.

WW351.jpg

A teleporter. Let's activate it !

WW352.jpg

Uh oh ! The evil pharaoh appears.

WW353.jpg

And destroys the teleporter.

WW355.jpg

We were about to kick his ass, but Kerah also makes an appearance.

WW356.jpg

Crap. She's possessed by the evil one. We have to fight her now...

WW357.jpg

After a bit of fighting, she asks for holy water. Cool, we have plenty.

WW358.jpg

She's free now.

WW359.jpg

She immediately flees. Whimp !

WW350.jpg

Back to exploring. Yep, more demons.

WW366.jpg

Finding the heart of the lich requires jumping to the top of a column.

WW367.jpg

So you can access this secret lift.

WW369.jpg

And get to this altar. We grab the heart and go back to the lich.

WW371.jpg

Alright, we'll put it in the black fire.

WW372.jpg

Goodbye. Forever, this time.

WW365.jpg

Getting close to the final boss' lair.

WW360.jpg

The two champion keys open the door.

WW361.jpg

And here he is. Round one : FIGHT !

Only the Mavin and the staff of death can touch him. Jasede uses the staff and KC the Mavin. After a couple of powerful blows, the evil one tries to strike a bargain.

WW376.jpg

So ? Not so proud now, are we ?

WW377.jpg

That's the point in the game when you can become an evil turncoat. We choose to simply ignore him. Which he takes as a "NO" so the fight goes on.

WW378.jpg

Almost dead.

WW379.jpg

KC has killed the final boss !

WW381.jpg

How did you get there ? It's about time you showed up. What more do you want ?

WW382.jpg

You want the Mavin sword back ? OK. Take it and begone. Lousy defender of all that is good.

WW383.jpg

Yeah right, GTFO !

WW385.jpg

And so ends the menace of Cet Ude D'ua kahn.

WW387.jpg

We find his physical body.

WW389.jpg

He holds the divine prophecy in his hands. The prophecy that tells of his demise by us.

WW391.jpg

We torch all this shit up.

WW393.jpg

The Mavin has returned to the skies. To be used again when the time comes.

WW394.jpg

The whole story was a tale told by a dragon to his dragonlings.

WW396.jpg

Now off to bed with you...

That's it. The game is finished.

Special final screenshots : The Evil Path !

WW373.jpg

Jasede is now evil incarnate !

WW374.jpg

Anephas is none too pleased about it.

WW375.jpg

Just as with the evil pharaoh, only the Mavin and staff of death can hurt him. He is equally easy to defeat.

Thank you guys for bearing with me and for your nice comments. And most of all, thanks to Sovy Kurosei for hosting my screenshots.

I liked the ending because it had dragons, but gosh was the final fight disappointing when I played it myself; and that was on expert. :(

Hurray the evil one is gone!

Kinda...uh...typical an ending. Even with the dragon-bedtime-story angle.

Great Let's Play, many thanks.
