Choose Romania and side with the Germans. Then with Russia. And keep switching sides.

Playing and persevering as Poland isn't as impossible as it sounds, as far as I know. But it may require an understanding of the finer details of the game

At that note - how about Czechoslovakia? :)

Uruguay is a playable nation?! I have to get this game...
Technically, yes. You may even have a regiment of infantry or two. Victoria (Revolutions) from the same developer is a better bet if you want a proper chance at taking on the world as Uruguay, though the game is even more complicated and opaque than HOI.

Goddamn, I love that game. The mayor powers are guaranteed action filled games, but the minor ones can be a lot of fun. Would love to see either Finland or Argentine. Though with the compendium mod Finland's winter war would be rather interesting. Looking forward to the lets play!

PS Am busy playing Crusader Kings where I'm trying to create a Dutch kingdom. I suck at the game, but it's great fun trying to keep my dynasty alive.

Two questions:

Does someone know if the C.O.R.E Mod by the Terranova.dk team is quite good?

How long does a usual game take, if you got all the addons and mods?
I'm usually playing EU3 + NA + MM Mod where you play a period of ~400 years (which can take several days of playtime), so I really fear that those small 30 years will be a bit too few for me.

It depends, there is alot more micro management in HoI2 than in EU3 especially if you play a major power and even 1936-1945 can be long in playtime, probably a few days depending on your playstyle.

Yes, HOI2 also takes a huge frickin amount of time, if that was a worry. The more you micromanage, the more time it takes. And there's a lot of things open for micromanagement.

Alright folks, voting is closed.

Finland: 6
Poland: 6
Italy: 2
Ethiopia: 1
Brazil: 1
Argentina: 1
Switzerland: 1

It's a tie! So the master decides at this point. Aaand i choose... Finland! (sorry to my polish friends, but i don't think i'm capable of doing anything else than build mass infantry and delay the germans and russians a bit...).

It's a pretty good mod as well, but after having played the land combat of TRP and compendium (which are the same basically), i just can't get back to the vanilla combat model where battles only take some hours and are rather quick and boring. With TRP battles can last for weeks if the armies are somewhat even, and then it actually becomes very important and battle-deciding to have CAS (close air support) and reserves.

You can expect an update within the next 1-2 hours!

First, a little bit of history:

histinfoov5.jpg

And our proud nation of Finland in it's full glory!

finland36yh8.jpg

politicrv9.jpg

January 1, 1936: Tactical situation - to the east lies the vast territory of our former oppressor, the soviet union. They don't like us much and neither do we:

russhm1.jpg

Also note their IC (Industrial Capacity, used to build units and supplies) of 237, while ours is 11. On the western and northern border are our swedish friends and Norway.

sweqm5.jpg
norwmz7.jpg

The finnish army consists of: 11 outdated Infantry '18, two modern Mountain '36 divisions and one mobile headquarter. A hopelessly outdated navy of 2 Heavy Cruisers and 4 Submarines under the command of Rear Admiral Jülopova anchors in the port of Helsinki. Currently we have no airforce at all, but own 4 fully build up airports, so supporting an airforce would be no problem, should we decide to build one.

armyww2.jpg

We currently posses 1 free tech slot and an empty production queue, where we may spend up to 11 IC:

Now it's up to you guys to decide on a strategy for the first year.

a) More basic infantry and land forts to secure our borders.

b) Focus on smaller and more specialised commando troops (mountain and cavalry).

c) Ground units?! The key to victory is a modern airforce, fool!

d) It has to be navy all the way! That won't help us against the soviets, but maybe we manage to conquer some secure colonies before they come.. <-- not the wisest choice!

e) We desperately need more industry, our current army is more than enough to defend our homeland during the next year!

f) Try to join the axis at all costs, only germany can protect us from the communist menace!

g) Prepare a surprise attack on Sweden/Norway, we need more territory and their IC will also help us much!

h) Lolz, your strategy sucks, here's how to win:

Form an alliance with Norway, Sweden, Baltic countries (if they are still separate from Soviet Union) and, of course, the mighty Poland! :)

I would say: A, E, F combined, with emphasis on A.

I'm not sure if I would ally myself with poland, they're not exactly going to be able to lend you any resources and you'd just get dragged into messes.

C then modernize our troops to push back the inferior Russian hordes in the coming war. Getting more IC could be good too since the winter war is in 1939/1940 I think.

EDIT:

We should mothball the fleet if it is taxing too many resources.

If it is possible to see if you can replace the ministers/leaders/military divisions of Finland with members and portraits (if applicable) from the Codex. That would be coo'.

h. Increase industry for at least one full year. Then bring some ground forces to bear. Artillery would be nice. Start work on some naval minelayers, as well. If resources permit, some bombers would be very useful. Underwater mines from the White Sea to the north, then work to take control of the two provinces to the east of Sortavaia (Petrga..vodka, and Segezha?)

Once the reds are cut off, pound them into submission and take everything east of Petsamo and Kajaani. Build AA stations in Kola. Heavily fortify Segezha, Vodkaland, and Viipur. Plenty of artillery in Sortavaia. It really blows that Finland has such little IC, or else this would have rocked.

Anyway, if you can change the ministers, I want the Navy. Please. And all of the inflatable rafts you can muster...

Soo.. i'm finally back from all the new year partys..

The general agreement seems to be a mix between A and E, so i will do this with a focus on E. Also, plan F will be executed, if possible.

Sadly, there are no minelayers.. just battleships, subs, transports and carriers.

Thats a pretty good idea, will try to do this. But my fear is once the war starts the soviets will push us back and leave no room for an offense of ours..

No idea how to do this.. if someone knows tell me and i'll try.

Not sure if that's a good idea. Would leave our numerous beaches open for naval landings.

Getting rid of an old and useless fleet would be a good way to save resources if you don't plan to rebuild the navy into something useful. You could sell or donate them to another country.

I really like this game. Playing the minor nations is surprisingly fun too. I'd probably like Victoria if I find I have a few decades to work through the impenetrable layers to finally get to the good parts. ;)

"You did what?!" screamed Kivimäki, rising from his chair. "I'm sorry sir.." mumbled his secretary, "i forgot you..." "Yeah right, lady, you're fired! Get out of here. I've told you a thousand times already i don't want any sugar in my coffee!" The secretary cringed and hastily left the office. Kivimäki, head of government, was famous for his blind fury and she knew it was'nt wise to contradict him.

"Now, back to work.." Kivimäki turned to his cabinet, the ministers were looking down at the big mahogany table or skimming through their papers. "What's next on the agenda?" he asked Arvi Oksala, his armaments minister. "Well, sir, the scientists of Tikkakoski are reporting they started the development of new infantry weapons and tactics today".

97869496uu8.jpg

"Good" Kivimäki seemed to calm down a bit. "At least my more important oders are carried out correctly.." he thought to himself. "Also, we've begun the construction of several new weapon factories in Helsinki and are estimating they will be finished in march '38", Oksala added.

40097851ww6.jpg

No one noticed the slight grin on Kivimäkis face. His plans were going along nicely and the cabinet was a simple yet effective tool without them even noticing. Everything was under control. "Well, if that's all i'm closing the meeting now, get back to your work". Kivimäki sat back into his big comfortable chair (some people might say it was more a throne than a simple chair) and waited for the things to come.

early March, Germany reoccupies the Rhineland and some suspicious Soviet troop movement along the northern swamplands:

June 20, plan F status: we have finally gathered the funds to request an alliance with germany, but are faced with bad news:

July 17, Nationalist Spain declares it's independence from Republican Spain. Civil war begins.

October 15, our national hero, Carl Gustaf Mannerheim, is ordered to develop arctic warfare tactics, which will give our troops a significant advantage in the harsh finnish winters..

November 25, Japan signs the anti-comintern pact with Germany:

Nothing interesting happened during the rest of the year 1936, besides Nationalist Spain (light yellow) making some significant advantages in the war. Germany and Italy's help proved to be very useful:
