It's great to see the continuation of this LP, despite so many adversities!

I guess the African campaign is likely to last until the end of 1947. I'm wondering how far will you be able to advance in the Middle East, given the limited size of your forces in the theater. Are you going to focus on pushing towards the east (through Persia), north (through Caucasus), or west (through Anatolia)?

The onset of April didn't bring new alien attacks on the European front, so I guess they will never do it again (at least in southern France and Brittany). Once the fortifications are finished, you'll be able to send somewhere else much of the troops currently tied to holding the line.

Well, the idea I had is to use the expanded tech tree from Darkest Hour to accomondate the alien invaders better.

I also think it'd be good to divide the aliens into different "countries" (invasion forces) to better facilitate the AI. It would also mean the aliens have core forces across the globe. Naturally, their IC and resources would be entirely off-map.

I don't aliens should even have nukes. We could have a really nice event for each of the countries for deploying mankind's weapon that the aliens do not have, a hydrogen bomb, against the local mothership.

Anyway, some ideas I had for human survivors:

Finno-Ugric Coalition in Finland, Estonia and Northern Russia and Urals, plus Hungary. Hungary is there for a nice mission type event chain where the Coalition tries to evacuate the Hungarians across the Carpathians to Poland and from there to the Baltic Sea. The idea with this nation would be that the poor infrastructure and forests would allow for a defensive line against the aliens.

Scandinavia, with Sweden, Norway and Denmark. The idea would be that the Scandinavians need to create a chokepoint somewhere in Denmark so the aliens can't cross Öresund.

Anglo-African Empire, formed around South Africa when Britain falls to the Albion Invasion Force. Ruled by the British royals, absolutist.

New York Free State, formed around the immediate surroundings of New York, protected by a massive land fortification line and air defenses.

Andean Refuge, with a line of fortifications stretching across the Andes.

Caucasus Collective. Stalin makes his crib here.

Eagle's Nest, located in the Swiss and Austrian Alps as a series of fortified clusters. Nazis retreated here.

The Japanese would be scattered to their smaller islands, with Hokkaido or Shikoku as the main refuge. Or maybe Okinawa or Kuyshu.

Tibetan Qing, ruled in tandem by the Lama and Pu Yi, consists of Tibet as the last resort fortress and other mountainous regions surrounding Tibet.

Hawaii Protectorate, the Kwa relocates their industry here should they succeed holding out long enough in California. Also includes Alaska at the start.

Yukon, Canucks hide here.

Vietnamese Resistance, fortified pockets across the Vietnamese coast line and beyond.

Province of Nubia, Italians flee here to the mountains. Includes Somalia. Events around the internal unrest due to being essentially a foreign occupation.

Arab Emirate, consists of the Arabian peninsula. Largely left alone by the aliens, due to being in the middle of buttfuck. Important late game when starts providing masses of oil to the other humans.

We should do genocide events for China and the Indian subcontinent, maybe some major European countries.

I think we should organize the humans into two factions, being the totalitarian states from WW2 spearheaded by Hitler and Stalin and the UDMS. Aliens would, of course, be the third alliance that accepts no new members.

NOW UPDATE!

I Think I should turn the surviving Arab countries and parts of liberated Middle East into some united semite country by event(Israel was never founded so Jews and Arabs, who are both semite peoples, making peace and forming a multikult country isn't that far-fetched) to become a potential rival of what is going to happen in Africa after liberation for having cores in North Africa.

One more thing, every update the number of non-repeated not directly related pics decrease, and it is starting to be less fun, so I'll stick to in-game screenshots mostly.

Looks like you are going the nuke route ...

Is there any other way to defeat hundreds of divisions stacked in a single coastal province, and then stretching all the way down of doomstacks from the Channel to the Mediterranean, that doesn't involve the even more exploiting trick of surrounding a capital and never occupying it(which wouldn't work anyway as Wilhelmshaven is a coastal province)?

In any situation conventional means of victory aren't totally impossible, I'll not use nukes, however. Only for ridiculous doomstacks that are impossible of being cut off from supplies.

Facing a four-digit strong divisions army in Hearts of Iron 2 is an unique experience where the flaws of the AI, although persisiting, no longer make the game easy, even with nukes, I'd say.

If the xenos will not come to Muhammad, then Muhammad must go to the xenos

lOB1G.jpg

Thanks to many improvements in the air warfare tactics used by UDMS-KKK fighters, the threat of supersonic alien interceptors is significantly diminished, and although casualties happen, the enemies suffer proportionally to every fighter downed. Although they can't advance through ground, over the skies of France humanity has near complete Air superiority.

yibcY.jpg

And in one of these flights, the pilots uncover an estimation of how many legions gathered over Saint-Etienne. Over six millions of xenos are cramming over the region, yet strangely, they haven't tried to attack, for if they did, all at once, even in spite of the wrecking inefficiency of launching such a disorganized legion to attack a single point, this front, or perhaps the whole war, would certainly be over.

i4Z9H.jpg

In other circumstances it would be useful, but the UDMS-KKK already decided for interceptors to make the bulk of their fighters instead, and researching all the way through fighters isn't something they have the luxury of doing, as the interceptors are more than enough for their role, making them redundant. also, this confirms that only in Saint-Etienne, almost one third of the entire xenos army is stationed, and with an average of one hundred of their divisions over each province in this front, it may as well be certain that more than half of their forces are concentrated there. Still, with an estimated total of 1811 infantry and 253 armored divisions, defeating them will be a herculean effort that may end requiring drastic measures.

BJwX2.jpg

Banana could be used to ensure an encirclement of many xenos, provided this difficult offensive against well-fortified powered armor aliens in a jungle succeeds. However, because of bad luck, great storms rage over the nearest air base, and thus, without air support they are forced to fall back and this encirclement doesn't happen.

2n1OR.jpg

The research to create a new, modern navy of nuclear powered capital ships is still a long way to go, but much closer than it was back when the darkest hour of the UDMS-KKK navy came and its surface forces were totally obliterated. The revenge for that will yet come. Or not, as beating a navy with, according to latest Intel, 95 carriers and 66 small ships may be much tougher, except that the enemy seems to be severely underestimating the importance of escorts which may lead a better structure fleet to victory even against such numbers.

The Siege of Riyadh

n3YHw.jpg

Having defeated the aliens in Jawf marked the beginning of what could be a great victory by crushing the encircled aliens in Riyadh, but to ensure it, now Jawf had to be successfully defended. Immediately upon their arrival, the former AfrikaKKKorps were assaulted by a small force of infantry, tanks and tripods, which made holding their ground extremely difficult, specially as the sand provided little terrain advantage for the defenders. The war machines trudged through it rapidly, as anti-tank and artillery fire rained from the skies. The defenders begin to quickly lose ground as the first line of defense is smashed by the unforgiving tripods, and to answer to it, flanking attacks are being prepared against Karbala and Riyadh itself, from where in spite of lacking supplies, the enemies are also attacking Jawf.

tsgYF.jpg

With reinforcements, soon the offensive racks up to 8 enemy divisions, and the defenders seemed to be on the verge of defeat, while the diversionary attack on Riyadh was wearing out quickly. Reinforcements were coming, but to hold out long enough could not work against tripods, as they were backed to a corner, almost broken and there was not much more ground for any further tactical retreat. Yet, these men were not any men, they were brave AfrikaKKKorps, the first soldiers to succesfully defeat tripods in offensives involving less than hundreds of allied divisions at once.

ZyAC0.jpg

Through their resilience and bravery, they end successfully breaking all attackers but the armored and tripod divisions, and what seemed a hopeless stand begins to shows a few signs of hope while expeditionary arab forces are soon coming to help them down. Being 1941 and even 1943-grade infantry, they will actually be useful allies even if somewhat backwards in equipment.

xPkvL.jpg

Then, as three divisions arrive, the tide of the battle is turned, and the Tripods suffer heavy losses. Jawf is secured, as another great victory for the most limited of all UDMS-KKK theaters due to the fact it has much less divisions than both African and European ones. Afterwards, they rest a few days with offensive supplies, to reorganize for the purge of all xenos from Riyadh. Meanwhile, weather clears in Africa, and thus it may be possible for a second attempt to happen at Banana.

kgmoi.jpg

There is some hope this time it will work thanks to air support, in spite of how technologically advanced the enemies are.

lyrQu.jpg

However, it is quickly learned that regardless of air support, two divisions in power armor in the jungle are very effective defenders even when outnumbered. On better news, victory becomes clear on the east coast of Africa, where the forces are getting further and further through the south.

GcI0H.jpg

On April 21st, it is finally decided that Riyadh must be cleansed. Thus, from multiple sides, both expeditionary arab forces and AfrikaKKKorps launch a massed offensive. However, even with their great numerical and strategic advantage, there are many doubts about the outcome of this due to the presence of tripods.

Kmr4i.jpg

Yet, slowly, the enemy is pushed through the sand. The victory remains unclear, but many start to hope for it. The worse-off reanimated corpses are utterly broken in their capabilities to fight*, and simply rounded up for Exterminatus, and only the armored and tripod divisions are still putting up a fight

*Read the green "organization" bar of the animated dead as how many limbs those along their hordes have left.

:M

uYB5b.jpg

While the siege of Riyadh wasn't yet over, Karbala is disputed. Xenu renegades in power armor and tripods charge against the baneblades in a quite tough battle for the defenders.

ZokB9.jpg

Then, while things start to look more grim in Riyadh, a more conventional advance without the same amount of chances for a so massive encirclement as taking Banana would ensue succeeds over Central Africa.

bDlRJ.jpg

With the belief there was no hope of victory yet, the offensive is cancelled, and it is hoped that, by the time they reorganize again, they will be able to succeed before the encirclement could be broken from Kuwait. They wait for an entire week to recover from the failure, and pray for God or Allah.

wMuQd.jpg

The arabs then are given a true trial of fire as Medina, their very holy city, is attacked by the Great Satan, in an obvious attempt to break off the siege. Because of the implications of losing Medina again, they fight against the alien with a fanatical fervor, even with their limited equipment and lack of artillery, and buy enough time so that something could be done before a potential disaster, for Damman was lost too, which means sooner or later this encirclement would be over.

gLX24.jpg

Thus no more wait, from all other regions, a second offensive was launched on Riyadh. All divisions bar tripods were mostly broken on their will or capability to fight, this time, and thus they did everything they could while the defenders of Medina struggled against the tripod. Flanked and bombarded by artillery and anti-tank guns from multiple sides the tripod division suffered massive casualties.

pAENq.jpg

seOtn.jpg

And thus, the most important battle of April 1947 ended. Mankind once again prevailed, and the seeds were planted for the formation of another future ally of the UDMS-KKK. The Middle East front changed, as did the African front. The siege of Riyadh was over, proving once again that even with limited numbers, victory may be possible in a front where the possibility of being outnumbered is large.

uQ58W.jpg

Meanwhile, things were looking good over Africa. It may take only a few months before a final victory in the continent, which would greatly bolster the morale of all mankind forces. However, the plans for the Asian D-Day were delayed, as it was most likely impossible to build up a large enough army, or Air Marines in enough numbers for it before the next year.

In any case, there would be one more continent regained by mankind soon.

Operation Cleveland liberated the latter in 1943.

Well if we're proposing states now, I have a few ideas.

The Coalition of Socialist Parties (CSP), a group of far-left parties from across the UDMS-KKK, proposes the creation of socialist state, loyal to the UDMS-KKK and the Foedus of Man, in a liberated territory depopulated by the alien invaders. The creation of this state, they claim will ease any political tensions in the UDMS between left an right, by allow socialists to create a state of their own, which would begin industrialization to aid in the war effort. In a bizarre set of circumstances, this proposal is supported by a strange sect known as the Church of the Starry Wisdom, a group claiming knowledge of alien presence on earth long before the invasion.(They Starry Wisdom is the group from the Lovecraft story "The Haunter of the Dark", now pissed of that the alien invaders are fucking with the Old Ones plans.)

Secondly, I was wondering how an alien invasion would affect world religions, specifically the Abrahamic faiths. What if some charismatic preacher starts a new Christian or Muslim sect that casts the aliens as the armies of Satan?

Also,

Husayn would be proud.

I have a better name. Kaiserreich did it totally wrong: this is how a far more ideal kind of socialist state, one that never existed in the real world, will be represented in this thread.

First of all, I'd rather call it Noocratic Socialist Democratic Autogestion of Persia, or NSDAP

:smug:

Noocratic because it is only fair that stupid people and idiots unable to grasp the complexity of the concepts that involve such important decision-making aren't allowed to vote, and thus it still remains a "government of the wise"

:obviously:

Socialist because it'll be a fully socialist economy.

Democratic because, except for proven retards, everyone can vote, and it would be like a quasi-direct democracy with only the Executive branch being indirect, having no congress or senate, but instead laws proposed and approved directly by the people, and Justice also decided through direct voting, or sometimes lynching mobs.

:M

Autogestion because most decision-making is grassroots

Ah screw it I just love ironic acronyms.

Although this is the kind of question best given in an epilogue:

United States will be replaced by aliens in the surviving Islamic world as the Great Satan.

Hubbard is going to become far more influential and mighty in the future and Scientology will become the third most followed religion in the world.

The traditional religioous organizations of the world, as always, redefined the "interpretations" of their books to catch up with the newly discovered truths, however, in spite of this, most Abrahamic religions will go through many changes. With the human-centric nature of their holy books mentioning no other worlds or aliens, the tremendous loss of life and disruption of families, the cultural shock would lead large portions of their followers to lose their faith. From those, some became skeptics, but the sheer majority converted to the Church of Scientology.

We really should consider making a mod on Darkest Hour based on this, which is what the nation suggestions were for.

Speaking of it, another important thing would be an entirely new tech tree, possibly with all "secret projects" being reverse-engineering of alien technology and requiring a certain trigger to be enable. I'd suggest, besides having base technologies, to only trigger the event that unlocks these secret reverse-engineering projects if you have the specific "blueprints" captured through intelligence from the aliens(that obviously have access to all these secret projects), which would make them really difficult to get. However, in vanilla there is no "Has blueprint for tech ID x" trigger for events, and I'm not sure thus if this could be done in Darkest Hour. However, it might be a better idea to add VPs, after some time, by one-time events for the aliens in heavily defended core provinces where alien infrastructures of specific types are installed because they are required for their more advanced technology production, and thus would also unlock the production of power armor, tripods etc for the aliens, store the province ID in one variable for each of them like powerarmorfactory = Province ID, tripodfactory = Province ID and so on, and require for a country to capture the province for at least y days before researching such secret techs, besides some minimum human tech requirement of course, meaning those synthetic polymers, or something like that, on the end of the oil conversion research, could suddenly turn out far more useful. If it could be possible by event to downgrade the research and forbid it again should the province be recaptured, it would be even better.

This way, the mess of "How can x be replicated with 1940s infrastructure" also is solved as it would then rely on captured infrastructure. Let's not tangle on "self-destruct" argument because anything that uses an alien invasion in the 1940s where mankind might have a chance of surviving as premise already relies on a lot of suspension of disbelief and that would be pedantic.

As for making the alien DIVs and brigades as regular ones rather than save game hax:

If there is any spare tech id slot for super heavy tanks in Darkest hour, make them inacessible to human countries and put the tripods in them. Thinking about it, it would be more logical for tripods to be extremely powerful brigades attached to armored or power-armor infantry divisions rather than independent divisions of their own, albeit very devastating as brigades, possibly adding more than the non-attached total values of combat stats of the divisions they are added to and greatly decreasing their softness. In the same way, either merge 1945-1947 infantry to reserve the last slot for power armor infantry, or if there is a free slot, add it as another restricted tech. I'd suggest having separate stats for "reverse-engineered" and "original" alien tech as the human adaptations should be logically cruder, and no tripods unless AI is edited to make the tripod factory province defended by a so ridiculous number of divisions stacked that if the player actually pulled it out, he would deserve it.

To make the reverse-engineering even tougher, it could also be placed in "start years" far beyond the game end so that the player would have to spend a single research slot on them for a long, long time, besides all the other restrictions. And an astronomical total IC cost could also be applied as balancing factor.

Actually, I just had an idea for the tech tree:

Make use of the ideas from Doomsday Fallout and create new categories that eventually unlock for the human factions (and separate ones for the aliens). That way you can have aliens with tripods, flying saucers, etc and humans with superhuman soldiers and etc.

There's really no need to add in a Espionage component directly to the seizing of alien technology as it'd be unnecessary complexity, but events to speed up the process of the long line of difficult research items for seizing and reverse engineering of alien technology is a great idea.

I think there should be a limited number of tripods, actually. The AI shouldn't actually build more en masse but rely on lesser units, with tripods being super-elite.

I think the idea should be about holding out in your line of defence, and eventually being able scratch together powerbase either through building up your own base or by small raids, enough for a slow advance. Or in the case of multiple human players, coordinated attacks on defendable locations.

Another suggestion, this time for government sliders, but on it, are the economy and open/closed society slider limits for government types modifiable in Darkest Hour, or are they hard-coded like in Hearts of Iron 2? If they can be modified, this is the suggestion:

Roughly it would be like. Don't worry, I'll detail the labels later

Code:
Authoritarian
Left _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _Right
|LT LT LT LT RT RT RT RT RT RT
|LT LT LT LT RT RT RT RT RT RT
|LD LD LD LD RD RD RD RD RD RD
|LD LD LD LD RD RD RD RD RD RD
|CA CA CA CA CA CA CA CA CA CA
|CA CA CA CA CA CA CA CA CA CA
|SD SD LD LD CD RD RD RD RD
|SD SD LD LD CD RD RD RD RD
|SD SD LD LD CD RD RD M M
|SD SD LD LD CD RD RD M M
Democratic

Now for what it means:

First of all, the left-right should have no influence on whether a government is a democracy or dictatorship, or on how authoritarian it be.

Second, from Top to bottom, the government descriptors are Totalitarian, Dictatorship, Constitutional Autocracy. Most of the authoritarian governments are preceded by either Left or Right to define their ideology.

*Basically the difference between it and dictatorship is that it is a Rechtsstaat with rule of law, while in the latter the rulers are deemed above the law. Seriously, this is a much greater difference than the difference between Leninism and Stalinism, or Fascism and National-Socialism for the matter.

Third, if DH allows full modification of government descriptors, I'd remove "Left-wing Radical" to use it for a new "Centrist Democracy". As Constitutional Autocracies have limited participation of the people and may have their policies influenced by the traits of a ruling monarch, they may be either left or right in any case. The fact there are more right dictatorships than left is just because it is sort of logical for a "centrist" autocrat to lean more to the right.

With this, there are exactly five types of democracy and five types of autocracy. The Democracy types are from left to right: Socialist Democracy, Left Democracy, Centrist Democracy, Right Democracy and Minarchy.

Now Descriptions:

Socialist Democracy: Essentially, "Soviet Union done right", or more exactly, a country that has undergone a socialist revolution but which instead of a "dictatorship of the proletariat", ended with a "democracy of the proletariat". In game terms it is a democratic country with the economics slider locked near planned economy and about half-way with some flexibility(IE: two points left or right) in the open-closed society.

Left Democracy: Typical liberal government in American terms, encompasses both Social Democrat and Social Liberal in vanilla. Economy stay half-way but may be made slightly more planned, mostly open society.

Centrist Democracy: Pretty much what it says, provided it is possible to replace one of the authoritarian government types with a democratic one instead of these facts being hard coded, if hard-coded just replace it with Right Democracy and add Right-Left distinction to CA. Game-wise, halfway in open-closed with a big leeway to more openess but impossible to become fully open, plus one point left of the middle in free market - planned, with possibility of getting it to the first free market set where production time reduction bonus comes, but no more than that.

Right Democracy: pretty much what it says, except that it can get much closer to maximum free market than vanilla compared to Social Conservative. Somewhat closed society by default but can get all the way to open to represent the less radical market liberals. The more radical ones, on the other hand, are represented by:

Minarchist: Milton Friendman/Ayn Rand/Von Mises/Ron Paul's dream. Free market and Open society are always maxed and cannot be modified.

Constitutional Autocracy: Authoritarian government, but with some kind of rule of law or Carta Magna that limits in part the powers of its ruler. Open-Closed society in the middle by default, and is the only authoritarian government that can have a considerably open society. Economy can get near the extremes, about the point where it brings the fist production time reduction or IC boost bonus.

Dictatorship: Authoritarian government where the rulers are above the law, but do not exert absolute control over everything their subjects do, like in totalitarian governments. Depending on whether it is right or left-wing economics can, like CA, get somewhat close to the extremes, but not have either maxed. Open-Closed society can go from middle to near totally closed.

Totalitarian: obvious what it does. Regardless of being left or right wing, it is always a almost or totally closed society, and same applies to planned economy.

Leftist technocracy called NSDAP? Fuckin A, Cassidy, this LP just gets better and better. Will this state be comprised mostly of immigrants or ethnic Persians? An NSDAP could use some REAL aryans, as opposed to a bunch of teutons who got funny ideas from an old slavic lady. I suppose the NSDAP will be a Socialist Democracy, as described in your post above.

And shit, I can't what to see what you do with LRH. Read about his naval career sometime for many lulz. Is he on to something in the timeline, or just world-class bullshitter like he was in real life?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9AGVARpqdk

Your nation building is definitely my favorite part of this LP, and I'd really enjoy seeing some more of it. In fact, I enjoy this LP so much that I won't clog it up by posting a wall of text describing exactly what "dictatorship of the proletariat" means.

I have some bad, or perhaps good news. Because I heard text rendering in DF is much better in performance, and because I wanted, I installed Debian again.

Problem is my PC came pre-partitioned and I haven't meddled in it since then. According to the Debian Installer, resizing NTFS partitions as to get part of their free space and use it for creating Linux partitions was workable, but it led to everything in my second NTFS partition, the one I use to install non system critical softwares, and user content, to be wiped out. Which means all saves, all custom modifications. They're all gone, and therefore I can do nothing but totally abandon all my long list of ongoing Let's Play threads.

But worry not. At least this means I'll be going with something more than Paradox games next time. Something like the underappreciated gem called:

LIBERAL CRIME SQUAD

I decided to post this notice here as it is my oldest running LP thread, and now, unfortunately it has to go.

Also, does anybody know good bulk image resize/conversion and screenshot utilities for Linux?

Well, maybe we can commemorate this LP by starting to a pan-Codex effort on turning it into a mod?
