Yes, this is real RPG, from Japan. I've heard it kick ass.
It's pen&paper.

Khitan Warrior: Deep characters, complicated plot, emotional dialogues.
Khitan General: Wrong! Conan, what is best in life?
Conan:Giantic robots!
Khitan General: That is Awesome.

Because ToS is like a crash-course on the reasons why JRPGs suck so much, as well as into designing an overall shitty and pretentious game.Prosthetic Brain said:Tales of Vesperia seems alright but I haven't decided if I can bring myself to accept it's hardcore cute anime look. I could mention a few oldies that I thought were good but I would probably be denounced as a witch.
Yep. For example, the turn-based the Front Mission franchise (it's WW2 though, but then again Japanese have a massive hard-on for Germans).mondblut said:BearBomber said:Khitan General: We have won again. This is good! But what is best in life?

I don't know nor care what "mecha" is, but giantic robots ARE better than "deep characters and emotional dialogues". More entertaining, anyway.
Hm, a certain professional once told me a squad tactics game about World War One-aged steam-powered giant mechs with dreadnought-style turrets, yperite tank-launching catapults, zeppelins and other shit like that would be immensely popular in Japan. No manga bullshit, just stylistically honest to death crudely armored walking machines, Bolshevik aesthetics and stuff. Is that true?
Never trust the Tales fandom. No idea how Vesperia is, but even though the games have talented voice actors, everything else in them is shit (and the massive amounts of dialogue are mind-rapingly bad). Also, the graphics in Vesperia aren't hand-drawn.I never owned a Game Cube so I have no idea. The reasons I'm thinking about getting Vesperia when the price drops (You think I'm going to pay $60 for Yet Another JRPG?) is because of the supposedly great party interaction, the battle system and overworld, the interesting looking towns, big bosses, and the beautiful hand drawn visual style that I love and hate. A ton of party interactions with a bunch of dialog is great if the dialog is well written and appropriate for the setting - ToV seems to be going for lighthearted and funny. I wish they would let you change the voice acting to Japanese, though. At least Lost Odyssey let you do that which made the game more bearable (Then again, from what I've seen [Heard?] the English actors in ToV are leaps ahead of those amateur hacks that worked on Odyssey).
:honourblade:Concerning your signature, Street Fighter not only contained those choices, but also choices on which class of fighter you wanted to be, how to play them tactics wise, and what color costume you wore. In addition, it featured a bevvy of multiple endings. Sadly, there was no Zangief diplomacy, and so it could never rise to true RPG status, but it does deserve respect for how it helped propel the genre forward.

The thing is that Tales is a NAMCO game, and is thus entitled to mainstream blowjobs.Prosthetic Brain said:Vaarna_Aarne said:Never trust the Tales fandom. I wouldn't touch any JRPG fandom with a ten foot pole. I'm basing things on videos and the reviews at IGN and GameSpy (Don't worry, I do avoid them when it comes to AAA Western titles and Final Fantasy/Dragon Quest). Saying everything else in Tales is shit is kind of harsh. I take it you're not a fan of the Tales style combat?
I know the graphics are not hand drawn. I meant to say that it has "a beautiful hand drawn look to it, even though it's cell shaded."
Also, I refuse to believe there has ever been a talented voice actor for a Japanese to English game. Saying Vesperia is better in this department than Odyssey is not much of an accomplishment. Hearing a dozen puppies cry out as they die of hunger would be less gut-wrenching than listening to the spoken English dialog of Lost Odyssey.

world war 2 dieselpunk with nazis, in the vein of gear krieg would be even more popular, methinks.mondblut said:Hm, a certain professional once told me a squad tactics game about World War One-aged steam-powered giant mechs with dreadnought-style turrets, yperite tank-launching catapults, zeppelins and other shit like that would be immensely popular in Japan.
