Well, to answer the OP's question, Divinity 2 is not a good game. It is fun, entertaining and does a good job of keeping you interested, but it is not a good game.

Storywise, the whole of the mainquest is relatively thin in terms of writing, linear and doesn't offer any meaningfull choice to speak of. And while it did keep me interested without the 'whatever, I just wanna be done here' problem that usually occurs in such linear games, it is simply not a well written story.

The sad thing is, it could have been. They actually missed by only a couple of sentences. I don't wanna spoil anything here, so lets just say they had a decent shot at presenting a good story that could have stood out of the usual safe the world happy end bla bla bullshit, but the blew it by not thinking it through.

From a technical standpoint, the game is amazingly well done. While there are numerous bugs, I haven't encountered a single gamebreaking bug and very few minor ones in about 40-50 hours of gameplay. This however comes at a price, the price of convenience. The inventory is badly done, you cannot handle stacks for instance. You cannot doubleclick savegames to save or load, the keyboard is disbaled for conversations or quest rewards and quite a few other similar things that could have easily been implemented but weren't.

Gameplay wise the game has more than a few balance problems. There is no way to adjust dificulty and depending on what skills you choose the game goes from impossible by the numbers to easy as shit. Some skills are so insanely powerfull that its not funny anymore while others are either okay or underpowered as hell.
Equipment plays a huge role in this too, but due to the fact that pretty much everything is randomized diablo style you can either save and reload before quest turn-ins until you get what you want or risk not beeing able to survive in certain areas.

The greatly hyped mind reading feature is exactly that, hyped. While it is an interesting tool to play with and does offer some hilarity at times, it quickly moves from a meaningfull choice (Do I use mindreading here to get this nice item but delay my level with it) to just another button you habitually click in conversations because the cost equalized with one more mob kill.

All in all, the game feels like they had a couple of great ideas which could have filled about a fourth of the game. But instead of either making a small game or thinking things through, they implemented those ideas and just filled the rest up with more of the same. Many of the sidequests after the starting area significantly loose in quality and appeal and combat quickly becomes a clickfest. I'd like to say a couple of more month of polishing could have done it, but the truth is that the game is flawed in it's basic design and writing.

Yet, I still maintain it is a fun game and even worth playing. Despite its many flaws I wasn't overly frustrated in my first playthrough (broke off my second about 3/4 through the game) and I felt well entertained. It could be that I was just starved for an RPG I didn't know by heart or that I just had low expectations, but again that wouldn't be true. I had fun playing it, but from an objective standpoint it simply is not a good game.

I have been playing RPG's since Ultima III came out back in 1983 and I have similar feelings to you. The games of old used to captivate for hours and days on end. I remember not eating or sleeping and ignoring everything else and then thinking about the game all the time till I get back to it.

todays games seem to look nice and be fun for a few hours but i always seems to stop playing and just forget about them.

How the heck did Richard Garriot captivate me with the simplistic graphics of Ultima III where I would play for 24 hours straight, while games now rarely hold my interest more than a couple of hours.

MAybe Im getting old and need to move on to another hobby.

I would say that those games are good because they were made by people who wanted to make games and not necessarily a profit. The histories of so many great studios seem to be the same: a group of highly intelligent people make games because they like to, even though they're always on the fringe of bankruptcy.

Games nowadays seem to be designed to give you around whatever gameplay hours are advertised by the marketers and then that's it. You're expected to wait for the next installment and never go back. At least that's the way I feel. I played through Divinity 2 and while it was fun for a bit and rather humorous at times, I doubt I'll ever go back to it.

Gameplay hours: Today the common length is 10-15h which is entirely ridiculous for even a shooter given the retail price target that most game want.

Teh russkies picked this up quite quickly as well, although they've yet to produce a genuionely good/unique/non-derivative game yet.... The Poles seemed to have mostly managed to avoid this trap and seem to surpass teh ubermensch as far as bugs go for the most part...

Actually the first divine divinity was an ARPG with a halfway decent story(god awful combat), unlike ANY other ARPG. This sequel sounds to be much the same.

Also now upon reflecting upon teh above edit, aren't teh devs actually filthy rotten belgians?

Since the first Divine Divinity can be had as a $5 budget game it's WELL worth the cost and the clicky combat. Usually I can't stand "action" "RPG"s but I did end up enjoying DD MUCH more than I ever thought that I would. (Tip: if you wanna cheat, drop NEGATIVE numbers of things that ask youto specify how many to drop.... :P )

Currently playing. Like it more than Drakensang, which was also a good/okay game. But it's nothing special. Combat sucks. Animations suck more than Bethesda's, it's horrible. Dialogues are okay, the mindreading mechanic is interesting but can be abused by saving and reloading. Generally, it's an okay game, I like the atmosphere in the towns. Combat sucks, though. The writing style is, at least in the German version, quite into the "cheap lulz" direction. Meh.

Worth torrenting, but not worth buying at full price I would say.

I really liked the first town (er, not the tutorial one). Spent maybe 2 or 3 hours doing sidequests, some decent C&C (though micro level, not macro level). Good dialogue to combat ratio.

A lot of combat in the open world after that, though. There are some optional dungeons - one was pretty big I remember, it was a tunnel system connecting three points on the map. There's a secondary town - a bandit town - that is not nearly as extensive as the first town. Dialogue-wise, it dips quite a bit after the first town, but on the other hand, I found a lot of unique side quests and objects of interest placed around the world. A few examples: a necromancer that will create an undead minion for you (out of body parts you collect) after you help him out, three pieces of a talisman you must find within the aforementioned tunnel system - after which you must find the correct altar to combine the talisman, and magic circles strewn randomly where a crazy mage summons random monsters to attack you. I liked these side... things... because they weren't obtrusively shown to you as side quests, but simply found if you decided to explore a seemingly unimportant road off the main path.

Then you get into the first main dungeon which I found to be neither too small nor too big. After that is the Battle Tower island which unfortunately like the bandit town is sparser in dialogue than the first town.

The main annoyance you may face is that the levels of the enemies distinctly jumps up after you finish the area around the first town, and so you have to spend some nontrivial time gathering experience.

I didn't find the combat that great either, though it's not terrible and I could put up with it as I liked exploring the area and finding the sidequests. I may have been playing incorrectly, but I couldn't figure out how to play a straight mage. Besides Magic Missile, which you can spam, your other nukes have a ridiculous 10 second or so cooldown, and they don't do a terrible amount of damage against an even level opponent. So I would fire off a Fireball, a Magic Burst, and then I have the choice of either spamming Magic Missile or spamming my melee attack, and the latter seemed to be just as quick without consuming mana. Bear in mind I have basically 0 points in my melee skills.

From what the spoilers in an english review on RPGWatch say, the ending sucks.



But then, so did the KOTOR II's and I still like that. Oh well.

So for those who really liked and maybe loved the original DD....Does this game have the same feel?

I loved the exploration, atmosphere and music of the first game. Can't decide if I want to buy this or not...(Once its out in English).

Well, it still has tons of barrels and crates and weird little items to pick up like the original. I'd say the combat feels about the same were gaining one level means you can suddenly take on an enemy type that you previously couldn't.

The music is still great, though I don't think quite as good as the original.

The atmosphere... is nice enough, but the Speed Tree really ruins it for me. Seriously, I can't stand Speed Tree, the trees look really ugly and generic, but whatever.

All in all I think the first half is a lot of fun, but the second half with the dragon is pretty lame... the area you're mostly in is obviously designed for dragon flight and so it seems lightly decorated and pretty bland. I really wish they didn't have to go down the whole morphing dragon road, the game would have been much better without it IMO.

The worst part of part 1 was the combat. So it sounds like a clickfest again.

I really tried to like it, but the OTS action and platform jumping puzzles coupled with the unresponsive controls just ruined it for me. Maybe I need to get a gamepad.

Just watched a couple of the cinematic trailers on the website.

My god what is with the obsession with gay looking armour? Did anyone in their studio actually think the shoulder armour looked good? Arrrggg...

Played it for a while and... combat sucks shit. It's utterly horrible. Dialogues are okay, generally a fun game, but combat. Woah.

the tombstone on a hill of the isle ,the place where you will be able to transform into a dragon for the first time.

The grave to get Sassan?

If so, get the quest to save some moron that is from the camp on the north east part of the island, the one with the female trainer. She should give you a quest about saving some guy, or you might be able to discover him without her.

Saving him gets you a book which explains about lighting 3 candles around the the grave on the island. After that Sassan tell you a password for the evil dude's study which is located on the far north and east part of the island (by one of the alchemists)

After that you get a ring and must bring it back to Sassan.

Even though I am not playing it anymore somebody said you can abuse the mind reading ability with save/restore.
Actually you cant, One nice thing about the game (which other games should adopt) is that items or quests or whatever that you find out about through the mindread ability, only exist or are created when you use the ability. So if you find out that Count Chocula's secret stash of fruit loops is hidden in a chest in breakfast land, then the chest is created after the mindread event is triggered. Saving and restoring will mean the chest is not there.

Chest scumming exists though. strange.
