Surely the main character was a 3d model. It wouldn't have been practical to make 2d animations for all the different weapon and armor models. At least that's how I understand it.

There were absolutely no animated 3d models in the game. All sprites.

How can you stand corrected?

None of the characters, not the main character(s) or enemies or anything else, nothing at all, was a 3d model. So apparently, it was practical to make 2D animations for all the different weapon and armor models.

So, do you think you could give any update about the completion of the game?
