I think Wild Tangent is considered spyware by alot of people. Though it's been a long time since I've read about them.

Apparently, that's tied in with the ability to change the pet. You have to fish in some areas and feed the pet the fish you get in order to temporarily transform the pet into increasingly powerful forms.

Yup. I turned my dog in to a giant spider for a bit using a Fingerling Trout I caught in the dungeon. Apparently you can also fish up some rare magic items as well.

Pets are interesting. They're similar to the henchmen in Diablo 2. They run around with you and fight like the Diablo 2 henchmen, but they can also haul loot. You can give them potions like a Diablo 2 henchman and they can wear rings and amulets for armor and other abilities.

It's a pretty neat game. A little simple in some areas, but not bad for $20.

This game is pretty damn cool. I especially like the pet and how you just have to walk over gold to pick it up. It's a more or less straight Diablo 2 clone, but these little improvements really help.

I like being able to select the ALT item finding ability to being turned ON all the time. That's damned handy for finding chests, urns, and items laying around. That's one very nice improvement.

The random quest thing is interesting. It's nothing terribly fancy, mostly just find and kill something on some level of the dungeon as far as the goal goes. What's neat about it is that quests give gold, experience, and FAME. Fame seems to determine if you can wear certain unique items.

Yeah the game is certainly fun.

NeutralMilkHotel:
As for WildTangent being spyware, yep, it is detected as such by SpyBot S&D. I think it is distinctly less nefarious than it used to be though (or so I once read).

However...installing this game has proved a bit of a 'mare for me this morning.
Installed it, played it, had a bit of fun.
But then I noticed that my internet connection was completely borked. Also, a couple of WildTangent exe's (e.g. GameDriver.exe?) were still running in the background despite exiting the game.
After uninstalling the game (and doing spyware removal shit - a couple of restarts were required because some of it was "removal resistant'') I finally got my net connection going again.

This could have been just one of those one-off things...but I thought I'd mention it just in case others have the problem.

I humped GameDriver.exe by openning up the task manager, killing the process, and then renaming the exe. Then again, that's with the registered version. The demo might actually require the GameDriver.exe file.

That said..

Oh, here's something neat I found on the Fate forum:

  • tats are fixed for starting characters - they are

    Strength 25
    Dexterity 20
    Vitality 25
    Magic 10

However, if you are playing as a descendent ( after you have retired a character ) you automatically level up, and have 5 points to spend at the start of the game.

There are no 'classes' in fate, so any character can learn any spell, wear any armor, and wield any weapon - provided they meet the stats requirements.
So you can be a spellcaster tank if you wish.
And since all weapons except Staves, Bows/Crossbows, and Polearms can be dual wielded, you can get quite a bit of variety in your character setup.

For instance, one successful combo I have seen is an archer with Defense magic bonuses that allow him to cast Ringing Blast ( which pushes back nearby foes ) and Dervish ( which allows you to attack exceptionally fast ).

Combine that with a pet that is a Brain Beast and can sap the magic from enemy spellcasters, and you get a pretty effective combo.

    Just 1 example.

I had to grab the dial up version of it, then I grabbed the media upgrade a few hours later. The broadband download kept timing out on me as well.

Same here. The dial up version isn't too ugly, though, although it sounds terrible. Not as terrible as Need For Speed 2 Underground, though. Why the hell did someone see the need to remix Riders on the Storm? WHY?!

I heard rumors about that, didn't Snoop do it or something? If only jim morrison was alive, then he could go all badass Lizard King on them. Of course if he was still alive, the Doors would still have some artistic integritiy.

If Jim Morrison was alive... he'd have started making shitty music thirty years ago and we'd have bad memories of him. But he'd probably crush Snoop Dog and anyone else who did shitty covers of his music with mighty Lizard King wrath.

No he wouldn't, he was getting out of the music business by the time he died anyway, but we'll never know without the aid of a magic time-traveling castle.

I'm pretty sure there was a bunch of shitty covers of Doors music, STP covered Break on Through, Creed butchered Riders on the Storm and I forget the rest.

What really shits me about NFSU2 is that there's a godawful cover of Ramjam's Black Betty on their fucking soundtrack too. The terror just never ends when you're playing that nightmare game.

Yeah, the all-in-one file is borked for some reason. You have to download the small version then download the media upgrade.

One annoying thing is that you can't pick where the game installs--it always goes straight for C:\Program Files\WildTangent. That fucks over people like me who partition their drive up and keep a small system partition as C:\.

Actually, the first I heard about it was when I was emailed about it earlier today.

Yeah, it kicks much ass. I hit the end of the demo, and bought it promptly. I'm currently on level 11 of the dungeon. My only major complaint about the game is the lack of multiplayer. This game would simply pwn if it were multiplayer.

This game is basically Diablo with the right elements of Diablo 2 and a bunch of improvements. I really like the random shrines and altars, and how there's both good and bad things that can happen from using it.

The only question on my mind is how death is handled.

I wrote about it in General RPG Discussion: http://www.rpgcodex.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=7160

I would have submitted info for the main page, but I'm too dumb to figure out how to do that.

It's actually pretty cool, and it's where the game's name comes in. When you die, you choose your fate from one of three options (copy/paste from another forum:)

1) Pay a price in experience and fame to pop right back up where you fell (this option will never cause you to lose a level of experience or fame but can make getting your next level in either MUCH more difficult).

2) Pay a small amount of cash (I think its 10% of your current gold) to be fully healed and transported to a nearby level (might be as far as 3 levels up or down).

3) DROP (not pay as the manual states) all of your gold and get transported back up 3 levels fully healed. You only have a limited amount of game time (i.e. it only counts the time as you're playing, not like you can't just save and come back to the game next week) to reclaim your dropped gold three levels down...but its not clear how much time you have (I think 30-60 minutes).

btw, I'm very much hooked. I played to the bottom of level 3 (the end of the demo) and I'm salivating for more. I've already found two Yellow-class items (they're named and are definitely a step up from normal purple magic items) and I was just deciding on my character build (high Strength and Magic, Dual-Wield, Swords, Defensive Magic, Offensive Magic, and Spellcasting main skills).

I've posted a screenshots of my game. Check out the sword I got as a quest reward. There's also a screenshot of an amulet that's a quest item that's pretty bad ass.

Right now, I'm playing a Hammer focused guy with Critical Strike as my main skill. The only spell I'm using is "identify" so far. I've also put a few points in to Shields, so I can block attacks and trap damage.

There is a slight problem with hammers, though. I've never seen a magic hammer drop or one as a quest item or reward. Swords and staves drop like crazy. Maces drop every so often as well, good ones. I've yet to see a magic hammer drop.
