It's because it's turnbased. If combat wasn't turnbased the game would be so much shorter measured in game time. In terms of good quests and other things you would expect from a cRPG the game is quite lacking.

Ah yes if you removed [core gameplay] it would in fact be quite short.

Well Makabb sounded impressed by the game being over 70 hours but since it's turn-based the lenght is actually not that impressive.

It'd be comparably long if it were real time with pause instead.

Played alot of this baby on the weekend. I started playing Original Sin at launch but gave up after being distracted with something and after they announced the Enhanced Edition I delayed playing for reals until now. I'm not a super fan of the rules, you kinda just want to pump your action points and initiative and just keep the others stats high enough for your skills to not fail so much, there isn't much of character building depth here. The quests are mostly straight business and the story is well... weak is a generous word.

I really wish next Larian games to not have voice actors, the voice acting is fucking awful and that with the really boring writing, I was tempted to skip dialog quite a few times. It is strange, because Divinity Divinity 2 and Dragon Commander were solid on both story and voice acting even if their stories were straight low brow fantasy romps. Why with so much to hate, why I fucking love this game?

Divinity Original Sin is almost the polar opposite of PoE, on PoE, the designers decided DnD was wrong and tried to create a new system with very, very, mixed results the trouble is that they forgot that a game about murdering shit must be interesting on murdering shit, even if the system is great (there are plenty of controversy on the case of PoE) if murdering shit isn't, you got a serious problem that and the fact that Obsidian technical prowess is highly questionable (sorry, fanboys, but the Ai on PoE at release fucking sucked balls and barely worked). Divine Divinity Original Sin has a poorly tought out very cargo cultish system but boy they worked hard to make the best they could with the little they had, the combat is really fun and at least the Ai is functional even if not brillant.

Every single encounter is hand crafted exactly as I thought RPGs on this day and age should fucking do instead of relying so much on trash mobs to waste people's time.

Is the quest with robot permanently bugged what? Remote control doesn't do anything even after confirming the commands. It shoots one-shot killer bolts all the same. Also, is there any benefit to keeping those three other guys alive?
edit: nevermind, killed it, but remote control is definitely useless

Is there any way to adjust brightness in this game? It's too damn dark and either i'm dumb or there isn't an obvious way to change it via options.

Probably something in your video card control panel/app overriding the in-game settings.

Take a look in there.

Only 'togglable' option that mentions ''gamma'' is ''Antialiasing - gamma correction'', which is switched ''On'' by default. Most of the things on the list don't make any sense to me. There are hardly any descriptions on what they do.
It's not that bad anyhow. I can live with few dark corners here and there so whatevz.

Finished this finally (vanilla) on regular difficulty (or whatever the default setting is called). Some thoughts, in the order they come to mind a couple of minutes after seeing the credits roll.

Begin with a positive: Yes, combat is indeed great, although the difficulty definitely decreased as the game went on. I beat the last two battles on my first try with absolutely no difficulty, especially the final battle was really easy (remember this was vanilla version, I don't know how the EE compares) yet really long. The hardest time I had in the game was doing Luculla in an apparently non-intended order, which led to battling a lot of higher level enemies before I was really ready.

Despite the nice combat, too much is too much - the game is simply too long. It just felt grindy towards the end and the writing/characters/story are not interesting or rewarding enough to warrant such a grind. As my party consisted of two tanks and two mages (companions were Madora and Jahar) combat quickly became a bit repetitive as there was no reason to deviate from a working strategy. Featherfall and teleport to move enemies around, then hitting them with, for example, boulder bash or similar AoE incapacitating spell is funny, but even that gets old.

Graphics actually worked nicely despite the cartoony feel. I thought it would irritate me when I saw the game for the first time but it worked fine, however, it must be said, Kirills music probably saved the graphics as well as his compositions (despite identical ones being used in very different locations) are actually more important than the graphics when creating atmosphere. The humor was such a hit and miss that that in itself became something of an entertainment factor. And some of the jokes were actually really funny.

All in all however, I did enjoy the game to the degree that I wanted to finish it (also because of the hours I had already sunk into it by the time it got boring) and just to see the final battles. Looking back, again I agree with a lot of others here, that Cyseal was definately the best part of the game. There is, however, no chance in hell I will be replaying the game. For the first time ever playing RPGs, I used a guide on my first playthrough: I played the second half of Luculla and the entire Phantom Forest with a walkthrough open simply because I felt that I would otherwise have been wasting my time pixel hunting or wandering around the world in an order the developers did not intend. Yes, there are some areas which are in principle open to explore, but if you wander out in the desert in Luculla as soon as possible, then that part of the map is not open in practice, as there is no way around some of the encounters, which at such an early point are all but unwinnable. Happy that the game is finished, but not disappointed that I played. The guide was indispensable to my enjoyment however, which has not happened before.

Some of the puzzles towards the end... well, they made me happy that we have the internet. I might look at the EE differences, but probably not for longer than extremely casually. There were not too many memorable fights except some in Cyseal, the last fight in that chapter was really nice and for some reason I really struggled despite not having too many problems up to that point. Also, why the hell does the game give so many armors and weapons of the kind I did not use and thus not need? I don't how many extremely powerful arbalests, light armor, and one-handed weapons I got as loot especially towards the end (I remember one chest giving me no less than THREE high level crossbows), compared to a quite modest amount of good two-handed weapons and heavy armor (which both my tanks used). I actually shopped for my tanks' weapons for the endgame because of this, which probably is a first. Should probably have resorted to crafting but from what I understand that makes the game even easier. That loot system sure did not feel random to me by the end of the game.

The only one fight I will probably remember how it went down, is the one before
entering the source temple. The Death Lord created a lava pool and teleported Madora into it. However, she saved against death, so I teleported her out of there and featherfell the Death Lord in instead. Listen to some hissing and fizzing and say thank you for that easy XP.

Don't get me wrong, however, I am definitely looking forward to D:OS2, in any case.

Now, what to play next now that I finally got this over with... Underrail? SitS? Shadowrun Hong Kong? Gothic 2? Replay Torment? Wait for Siege of Dragonspear? Maybe read a book? Decisions decisions...

Ninjaedit: I understand that the RPS minigame is removed in D:OS2...

:yeah:

Currently playing EE tactician (honor) mode and I find it too easy. I mean the hardest battle was the first one, where you don't have a lot of options and it's pretty much about luck. I'm level 12 now and it's getting easier and easier. Even the boss fights are a joke. I was expecting Braccus Rex to be a challenge but he just stood there and did nothing while I was killing his henchmen one by one. The best he could do was to shoot some kind of fireball that took half of the health of some of my team members, and then he switched to a melee attack that could easily be tanked. I was scared that Arcane Vortex can quickly end the honor mode game by teleporting both your main characters in lava in the same turn, so I overly prepared for that encounter. However the destroy summon spell was not necessary, I could have easily killed him with normal attacks and spells before he could do anything.

Yes, even the hardest difficulty is still too easy, but that's what we got I suppose. Let's hope D:OS2 has more teeth.
