FFV is the best old school Final Fantasy but the story is a little...Final Fantasy-like.

there’s some good info here, but it is true that missing out on one of earthbound, ff9, and chrono trigger is a travesty

If it stays that way, I'd say that would make it one of the most credible JRPG polls I've ever read.

Earthbound deserves kudos for t's quirkiness, but it's often just as aggravating as it is charming. That falls in the same bracket of games like Phantasy Star 3 for me, in that there's a lot to like but actually playing it isn't anywhere near as fun as it should be.

But FF9 & CT are just games for romantics, and don't really have any core brilliance or excitement to get your teeth into.

I'm with Big Boss in that I think FF5 is the series stand-out entry. The story may be a bit flat, but the job system is way more fun than what most of the other entries offer.

Can't even disagree with that.

Am a hopeless romantic and storyfaq.

:whiteknight::desu:

Even though I also like a lot of system based games as Gastrick may attest and sometimes how gameplay *flows* together having a huge impact on me. Weird one with me.

Anyway, again certainly a more codexian list than the last one and thank you for putting in the work. Looking forward to see what the Top 2 are.

I am regretting now putting all three parts into one listing for these games. The idea was to avoid the MAL effect of having the entire list be third or fourth seasons of recent anime, since they're selecting for people who liked the previous seasons enough to keep watching. Except in this case it'd be completing two to three 50-60 hour games. Now I see the flaws of this decision, that if fans dislike the first games anyway, and people who didn't play them all are allowed to affect the total vote, then this puts the games lower than they should be.

I might expand the list out to top 55.

Full data will be posted eventually.

This list is definitely a lot more good than bad. It's kind of epic.

The idea was to avoid the MAL effect of having the entire list be third or fourth seasons of recent shitty Japanese pornographic cartoons, since they're selecting for people who liked the previous seasons enough to keep watching. Except in this case it'd be completing two to three 50-60 hour games. I hate Trails. Played ToTS FC so I am glad I was able to vote 3 in good conscience. Hate the sterile chibi look of everything. I have wondered whether I might like the games if they were made in the 90s, but I think I would still be turned off by the pretentiously cringe script and love story.

I've never even heard of this. What is it?

Like really, the fuck is this game?
No North American release, thus it is one of those games that some people love, others never heard of

.

So it's a... jarpg?

No Rance though, so it's not prestigious.

Dark Souls 2 at #78 is proof this thread needs set ablaze. Either bump it up into the top 10 or scrap this shit sandwich. It is literally the greatest aRPG ever made.

I'm very into cock and ball torture
I like that this list is so extremely period agnostic. Entries jump from 1993 to 2020 without a care in the world, being of course more clustered around the PSX/PS2 golden age from 1995 to 2006, but it follows the good rpgs onto the DS/PSP in the PS3 darkage and even manages to catch the few PS3 standouts like Valkyria Chronicles. It also includes games going back until the NES in the past, and modern classics from PS4/Switch/PC. Very good sign for this list being thorough and unbiased in finding good rpgs.

The top 10 has a span from Dragon Quest III in 1988 to Yakuza Like A Dragon in 2020. That's great range.

Created this chart showing the frequency of the console generations on the pure list:

GJnRe3p.png

Third = NES, Master System
Fourth = Genesis/Mega Drive, SNES, GB
Fifth = PS1, Saturn, N64, GBC
Sixth = PS2, Gamecube, GBA
Seventh = PS3, Xbox 360, DS, PSP
Eighth = PS4, Wii U, Switch, 3DS
Ninth = Any games released in 2021

PC titles were grouped by time period.

I have not played most of the games on here. The most burning question I have is: Is Suikoden 3 really better than 1 (I have played 1)?

Also, I played Warsong so long ago and I vaguely remembered it being good, so I voted 4 when it was on the extended poll. But does it really belong up with these?

Among people who have played all three of the originals, the games rank: Suikoden 2, Suikoden 1, Suikoden 3 instead of Suikoden 2, Suikoden 3, Suikoden 1. There's a slight selection bias with sequels where they do better just because people who disliked the previous games are less likely to play them. In this case S3 got 3.8 and S1 got 3.72.

I played Warsong for the first time last year and voted it a 5.

Definitely belongs up there. A delicious game with battles which you can really get your teeth into.

I'd say that 1 edges out over 2 and 3 because how focused the game is for its short length. You get a somber war story told in about 15 hours with lots of major characters dying that kept me on the edge of my seat. The game does not outstay its welcome. S2 and S3 have their story spread out over across 40 and 65 hours respectively and don't have anywhere near the same bodycount in terms of meaningful deaths and they feel padded at points. 3 also suffers from a lot of backtracking, and the new skill system will nice in theory just doesn't make a difference and simply adds to the tedium over micromanaging your units. I quite liked the innovative battle system, the setting, and the characters of 3, though, but overall I'd say S1 edges out.
