I'm surprised how well regarded this is round here. I remember finishing this and shelving it, not once did I feel like it matched the previous Igavania titles I've played. I sure hope they deliver a sequel b/c I absolutely love this genre. I wonder how different the art style would look for their next at bat.

It's had a lot of updates since initial release, is that when you played it?

It starts out strong because of the kitchen sink mechanics/systems design with arguably the most expansive set of weapon/ability/magic RPG options since Symphony of the Night, but the actual content is sorely lacking. Weak castle design and lackluster enemy variety are the main culprits, but there are also massive balance problems that make the mechanical variety fall flat. Optional content is trash too and there's too much grind available (both farming and upgrading shards for power increases). The only thing that's consistently great over the entire game is the boss design, but if you spam upgraded shard magic you don't even have to engage with that.

I'm the exact opposite. I thought the game kept getting better as it went on. And I thought the game had a huge variety of enemies. Not sure what you're going on about there. I loved all the hidden little secrets like on the train, the secret boss battles, etc. The game has a ton of content that you can easily miss.

Gears of Fortune is an absolute Banger as the zoomies would say, easily matching the best of Castlevania.

I also love Bloodstained and think it's the most well-realized and inspired project to come out of all the games on Kickstarter. It's likely thanks to Iga being a extremely spirited taskmaster that it's as good as it is, considering the graphics and engine indicate a very narrow budget. All I needed to see was the parallax sky in the tower to know he meant well when making the game and pushed for the best production values possible.
