Fallout 3 avoids this neatly then, giving players a constant string of second chances. You’re reputation is still tracked locally and globally via the karma evil-o-meter that labels you with different titles and insults based on your allegiances and actions, but you have a permanent ability to disobey your own ethic.

You can, for example, take on a specifically evil quest to slaughter the entire population of kittens a town, but doing so won’t prevent you from taking a good quest later or having a chance to expand the kitten orphanage to nicer premises if you want to turn your life around.

Choices without consequences? It doesn't sound very good so far.

The sad thing is you're right. Just like Oblivion, the codex's criticism goes way, way, way, way fucking beyond "the edgy critical look that the gaming press isn't willing to take", into waste two years of your life tracking down every piece of information about a game you have no interest in playing just so you can pick every phrase apart and lulz it for 4-15 pages.

It drives off people interested in actually talking about games they want to play, and draws in the blathering idiots that pop in just because we're zinging the company they hate better than they can get away with on that company's forum. Ring any bells?

A bit different, since the Fallout name getting bastardized is stirring up the old school RPG fans. The Morrowind fanboys who hated Oblivion never left and there seems to be no Oblivion fanboys jumping on the Codex/NMA hate.

Also, there's no other RPGs coming out in 08 that we know of. It's Diablo 3 and Fallout 3 than shit that's not coming until 2009.

No confirmation of any English translation of Drakensang yet. I forgot about Zehir since it's the second (?) expansion, but it's gets decent coverage for what it is.

I'm pumped for AoD, but I think we all got a bit burnt out on following every new screenshot and what not for the last 3 years.

As unpopular as this opinion may be, I think it's fair enough that a roleplaying game sometimes offers you the chance of rectifying past mistakes or "missteps" you feel you may have made. I think getting banned from Vault City in Fallout 2 is a good example of how that game could sometimes be a little *too* unforgiving in the C&C department. There was basically no way at all you could ever enter Vault City after pissing them off, except for cheating. No bribing the gate guards or somehow convincing them in some clever way that you were worthy of re-entering. Once you pissed off Lynette, the city was closed off for the rest of the game. This annoyed me a whole lot, especially because you could get yourself banned by doing things you didn't even know would piss her off.

I'm not, but there hasn't been a new screenshot for a while now. Most screens come from Elhoim these days and he hasn't posted any of the locations he's been working on since Teron yet.

She pretty clearly signposted when she was getting pissed off, as far as I remember you could only get kicked out if you either pressed a point that she had already reacted negatively to, or went obviously for lulz.

Unless you blew up the powerplant, of course. Okay, so maybe I was being stupid or inattentive here, but I honestly had no idea doing that would anger her. I thought she asked me to sabotage the thing?

Lynette is one of the rare things in an RPG - an unpredictable quest giver and power holder, where how she reacts is hard to determine.

All you know is that if you respect her in conversation she will like you more.

Knowing she is unpredictable, the less you do and the less you talk to here, is the safest option. Otherwise, save b4 talking to her or doing something that may piss her off...

Lynette was a great character. There were so many outcomes for that quest and the solution was never obvious, but you never felt like you'd hit a brick wall and couldn't figure it out. Man, I'm going to go play Fallout 2 now.

I think I remember there being several different solutions but it was so long ago I might be wrong. I replayed it a bunch of times trying to get the best ending possible.

There was a fuck load of choices for Lynete. You can even be captain of Vault City guard if you play your cards well. To please her you have to kill all the ghouls in Gecko and agree with her views on "slavery" but don't argue with her and call it slavery in her face. You can also get your citizenship papers from another guy but don't talk to her then and still do Gecko and report to that guy.

there’s a hidden flaw wrapped in the model of the previous games – that the player doesn’t always know how their options are being trimmed, their choices culled. You might miss out on important quests and information without knowing it, so as well as extending development time by factoring in all this redundant content, you can leave players feeling falsely trapped or locked into a game they don’t want to play.

I don't know whether Fallout3 can address this "successfully", but it is a valid criticism of Fallout's gemeplay mechanics.

A modern Fallout game can benefit from being more telegraphing of the consequences of what player is about to do, to make their choices more educated.
