Oh, right. I forgot I also wanted to suggest
Star Fleet II: Krellan Commander
here. Because later missions can indeed be regarded as 4X I guess (fun diplomacy and research is quite absent, though).
And its one of the few games with space and ground battles AND capturing enemy ships (although you do not get to command
those like your escorts or later other Krellan crafts unfortunately).

Make the Codex Great Again! Grab the Codex by the pussy Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Have to agree that some of the best games are missing from the list. Space Empires IV, Stars! and Aurora definitely all should be on the list. SMAC, Gladius, SC2 or Sins not necessarily despite their merit.
But from the games listed Ascendancy has a special place I'm my heart. It does so many things right and is one of the, if not the, most unique space 4Xs. Amazing atmosphere, unique races with actual gameplay differences (no humans), amazing soundtrack and graphics. The different movement options from start lanes to the 3d planes in individual systems are great and give more strategic depth. Like making a subpar system useful because you can use it for blockades. The planet improvements are interesting and include orbital defences. The tech tree is great. On and on. It could be the greatest 4x since MoO. And does so while being one of the few which are not mere clones. If only the AI could play the game.

Also one of the better MoO clones in recent years is Stars in Shadows. Which also should be on the list.

How is Space Empire IV compared to Master of Orion 2? I cloaked up 100h on MoO2 but the micromanagement gets me bored quickly.

SE series is even more micro-heavy.
Which one doesn't include heavy micro? Haven't played yet but it seems that MoO1 doesn't include that much
EDIT: forgot the "it seems"

MoO > MoO2 (even though I love both) - precisely because MoO2 inevitably turns into a micromanagement hell.

Don't try to change my mind, you won't.

MoO1 is the least micro-heavy of them all.
All the modern space 4X and civs have micro ad nauseam. Civ4 (with mods: Dune, FFH2) is the least contaminated by it, unless you try to overoptimize food reserves and the like.
If you're ok with switching the genre, tabletops or their PC ports are ok (number of turns is more limited there, so they can't afford excessive micro and "+10% buildings"). "Eclipse" is "tabletop MoO" and has freely obtainable PC ports. "Innovation" and "Race for the Galaxy" are also nice. They all have solo and/or AI implementations.
Out of PC games you may try Factorio. It's not a space 4X. And begins micro-heavy. But later you move to copy-pasting factory blueprints everywhere, bots build them for you and your task, as a player, is to make and optimize factory designs, not click through everything you see. It's all the planning you need and almost none of the micro.

Master of orion 1, the remake dominus galaxia is pretty good and imo better than remnants of the precursors.

Searched but couldn't find a similar poll for fantasy 4x. I'd make one myself, but don't know enough to come up with a good list. I imagine it would include: Master of Magic, Age of Wonders, Dominions, Thea the Awakening, FFH2, Endless Legend and Fallen Enchantress.

Master of Magic is the only right answer to this.

I really like Stars in Shadow. It's similar to MOO1.
Yes! All I would ask for would be a better AI.

It is super micro heavy indeed, but that adds a ton of flexibility, as you can design fighters, ground units, have a bazillion perks to choose from.
If you didn't like the micro management of MOO2, I would suggest Stars in Shadow or MOO1 indeed.

Did you try some AI mods? i found this post on steam:

it seems some of the most popular mods changes the AI:

go to the bottom of the page and sort by views.

User "harpy eagle" made 4 AI mods for it: "Tactical Combat AI Mod", "Strategic AI Mod", "More Varied AI Research Paths" and "Autodesign and AI Ship Variety", each changes AI beheavior in an area, but i think they can all be used together. I did not give attention to this game because i heard the AI is too weak, but if the mods changes that then i might be interested in it (if they work with the current version of the game).

Uh i really liked STar Wars Rebellion
Whether it is a 4X is disputable. You need only to expand by conquest. Explore is only really needed to find enemy colonies on the rim and even that not always. There are only two sides. No diplomacy. Very basic research. War, war, war, this is the only developed part. And some character management but that is hardly a 4X trait.
However, let's consider for a moment that it is a 4X.
It is fun for a short time but ultimately very mediocre.
- AI is bad, worse than average in a 4X.
- Easy, see above.
- Game, despite relatively simple mechanics, has bad micromanagement issues with both productions and missions.
- Tactical battles are badly done despite being a selling point for the game at the time iirc. Also not needed to win and there is auto resolve.
- Unique characters' role is underdeveloped. Most episodes 4-6 characters are in game with some nice mechanics like growing ranks in force and random chance someone non-canon might be Jedi. Fun! And useless. I suppose one could LARP.
- Many different special missions to perform, except not really needed and very annoying to manage in quantities.
- Mechanic of strategic space warfare are too simple, combined with bad ai, it is very easy.
a) Build and concentrate some production facilities
b) Build a fleet. Usually not needed to fight big battles but for the next point:
c) Find a sector with enemy controlled planets but some of your loyalty. Enemy fleets will be very small or somewhere else (AI, remember). Incite a rebellion on a planet. Once 1 or 2 planets have won their rebellion, all others in sector are doing it on their own. Winning a rebellion on a planet is a big swing in support in whole sector. Voila, sector is yours. After ~2 core sectors taken the war is effectively over. No need to fight big space battles at all. It's not even a real exploit but a game mechanic that makes sense. The only issue is that you can't wait too long to do it. One of the few things AI can do is increasing the loyalty on his planets to 100% (possibly cheating? can't remember).

You could use some self-imposed challenges but that can be said about tons of mediocre games and not an answer.

Boring after one or two games, Maybe 3 or 4 if you are a huge Star Wars fan. The first (very) few games are fun but from a 4X, you expect more longevity than that.

I think harpy's ai mods were already integrated into vanilla
