You can retire/unretire your forts without abandoning them. (Although the forts can get invaded and fucked over while you're gone). That seems to be th eonly major new change for Fortress Mode. Also, apparently the multi-tile trees (multiple z-levels) can fall on other nearby dwarves if you're careless.

(*) The mind has been rewritten quite a bit -- people now experience emotions according to different circumstances (lots of awkward monologues there), and they consider actions differently. The main outstanding issue is that I didn't get around to converting existing dwarf mode thoughts, so they sort of exist concurrently with the new emotions and that needs to be changed. I'll get to that before job priorities (which was one of the main shorter-term reasons for the rewrite). Some dwarves have life-long dreams and it is possible for them to recognize that they've accomplished the ones relating to skills and family. They cannot yet realize their dreams of taking over the world.

Dwarves run away from harmless animals. Monsters are terrified by the gruesome deaths of the dwarves they kill.

How does this sort of stuff slip by?

A bit later, more migrants, then a treacherous goblin ambush! My quickly press-ganged militia killed all but one of them (thank Armok for six armed hunters). The last one, a lasher, killed a dozen dwarves before the rest overwhelmed him and beat him unconscious. And then kept hitting him. He had an +iron helmet+, and they kept punching him there, to little effect. Every once in a while, a dwarf would wrestle him and break an arm or a leg. 53 pages of logs later, he had his shoulders, upper arms, lower arms, upper legs, lower legs, and most of his fingers broken, but he was still alive. My military was getting thirsty by now, and the lasher was bleeding a bit, so I figured I'd just let him bleed out. I cancelled my orders and watched the militia disperse...

Then he got back up.

He crawled to my fort entrance, bit a cat on the head, and shook it until it died. Then he did the same to a thresher. I went to order my military to attack again, and the game crashed. I'm pretty sure he was going to end me, though.

Edit: Oh yeah, and dwarves constantly climb the same spot, fall down and climb again. And flying animals don't move at all.

Yeah, and FPS is utterly raped by all the "important" changes he has made.

Can you confirm what the numbers in the ORIENTATION token mean? Research tells me they're probably female_chance:bisexual_chance:male_chance, but I could be wrong (especially in the middle).

It's a by-caste tag, so you'd use it twice for each caste if you want to set all the numbers. <male/female>:<disinterested chance>:<lover-possible chance>:<commitment-possible chance> It uses the chances to put an individual critter into any of the 9 possible configurations. Defaults are, if I remember, 75:20:5 for the same gender, and 5:20:75 for the opposite. That leads to a 3x3 grid, with numbers in it. I'm not invested in the current ones if there are better ideas, but it's probably not all that easy to make a good selection when the categorization is ad hoc anyway. I would have used caste instead of gender to allow more interesting outcomes for many-casted critters, but the optimizations would be a nightmare (already had to jump from 2 to 6 relationship pools...). Of course, all relationships are still eternal, so the lover thing is kind of broken now (sometimes it won't advance beyond lover because one of the parties is not interested in committing, but still neither ever breaks it off, ever... not unrealistic in individual cases, but strange overall).

Oddly enough, we thought retired adventurers would start forming relationships with 0.40.01+, so we wanted to have a better spectrum available, but then we didn't get around to the gen/pre-retirement specification menu, so all adventurers are still tagged with the special "undetermined" flag...

I have no words.

If this is a feature there better be a way to get Dwarves remarried, trying to build an eternal Fort around the pop cap that isn't reliant on migrants is hard enough without having to run purges on gay dwarf couples AND migrants. Having the majority of your breeding stock of Dwarves marry and produce no offspring forever would be devastating, because the bastards are too moral to have extramarital affairs.
