I've heard Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer is a pretty good roguelike for the DS.

I wish we had Black Friday in Germany. Wow, that's a good deal!
We got our 3DS back during Christmas time; Gamestop was selling it for 180$ for a day, which was an amazing price at the time.

I really wish we had Black Friday here in Germany, I need a lot of appliances: electric shaver, microwave, TV, computer mice, etc

Too bad Germany isn't so obsessed with American culture that it celebrates the commercialism surrounding holidays while ignoring the meaning...

(The scary part is he could be right. In 1978 a trade association marketing scheme started what is now a universally recognized holiday over there, and that was entirely original without western pop culture influencing it.)

It's somewhat odd the holiday that is reserved for celebrating what we have is immediately followed up by a day where we buy as much as we can.

Not that I can complain too much given the steals I got, but I do think it is curious Black Friday is annexing Thanksgiving and turning it into "Brown Thursday."

Honestly, given how Christmas in Japan works and originated, I wouldn't be surprised if, no more than the base "Japan adopts Thanksgiving" anyways, Japanese!Thanksgiving existed entirely for the sake of Black Friday.

Cromwell ,

Have you considered getting just a Nintendo DS ? The original one ? (Lite, XL, whatever) ? Most of the games were on that format. 3DS is getting a few exclusives, but if you want to save money and want to take a safe bet, you might want to look up that option ; especially second hand.

I have to put a new handheld on hold due to unforseen "money hates me and therefore runs away" isuses. Most of the ds games I play I emulate.

You could buy (and I think still can) on amazon the german version has black friday deals, from the monday before till the second monday after.... Also there were some other stores where you could buy electronics cheap at that day like conrad for example.

Aside from DS and PSP, you have another and I'd say better option. Get a JXD Android handheld. My friend gave me one of these

Yeah they come from China and seem like cheap shit but work surprisingly well, and Android's emulation scene is quite good nowadays. The screen on the s602 isn't the greatest but they have updated ones now with better displays. So check into JXD handhelds, I believe Amazon has some so you don't have to order from Chinamen.

Here is their lineup: http://www.jxd.hk/products.asp?selectclassid=009006&clsid=3

I'm getting an S5110b pretty soon which isn't listed there.

My 3DS XL is currently shipping.

I bought a XL because I heard it's better for big-handed manly men like me. It's also more suitable for longer sessions with its rounded corners. I also prefer smudge-free plastic to the original's gloss. 300 SEK (46 dollars) more expensive than the regular 3DS. I got the black/silver one.

I want to play Bravely Default and the new Zelda. Other than that I don't know what to get for it. Maybe some older DS RPGs since I hear it's backwards compatible.

I didn't get it particularly cheap, but it was the best price I could find in sweden. Roughly 240 dollars. And that's not including a battery charger (an additional 20 dollars) :(

Fire Emblem Awakening is quite good. Be sure to play on hard with permadeath.

after ~6 hours, bravely default got really fucking boring. but after ~10-12 hours it started to pick up again as you gained jobs.
if you like boss fights and final fantasy 9 (no card game tho :(), pick it up.

zelda is super good.

these 2 games alone made 3ds worth it, but there is also Bravely Second coming out in the future.

agreed. personally i really find the 3DS quite amazing. Don't forget those RA cards or whatever! Those are COOL AS HELL. Blew my mind.

out of the smattering of games my kids play on the 3DS they like Ace Combat the best. Gamestop had it for $4.
:mob:
:decline:
but perhaps that is because they are not in into jRPG / Pokemon XY / etc etc :incline:

i think there is good indie potential via the eshop but so far nothing shouted BUY ME personally.

Get Devil Survivor 1-2 (DS games with 3DS remakes) for sure. 2 is generally acknowledged to be the better one. The turn-based combat is excellent, although mileage varies on the quality of the story (like most games in the Shin Megami Tensei meta series). Still can't reccomend Fire Emblem enough.

I played the Fire Emblem demo and didn't like it. I'm trying to like those tactics JRPG games, but I just find them a teeny weeny bit too slow.

I'm playing Etrian Odyssey IV now. I rather like it, even if it is extremely quirky.

You have to learn how to like them the right way. Each system is slightly different. In Awakening's case (as it was in Fire Emblem 4), you run an eugenics program based on making the offspring of certain characters more powerful by endowing them with specific abilities (like Life Steal on critical attacks, for example, which makes certain characters almost impossible to kill) from their parents. Then you have to find powerful weapons to equip them with, the underlying purpose is to create a team to duel with or just tronce PvE and the harder DLC. Since the children inherit stats as well as abilities, you have to watch the random level growths to make sure they aren't too crappy, compensating with Stat-improving items.

Alternatively, you can just enjoy the single-player for what it is and delight in characters with good growths while dropping the bad ones from your roster, making adjustments when the ones with good growths have annoying personalities (for example, I would never employ or mate Vaike with anyone because he forget to bring his axe to the war -- multiple times)

Whether your playing it casually or hardcore min/maxing, the game cycles around the stat growths.

Note -- worth noting you can use the options menu to:

Turn off all fighting animations (or just the enemy's)

Skip the enemy's turn (it pauses to show you when one of your units has been killed or leveled up, then flashes to your turn)

Speed the game up

You can create offspring?
Alright, I'm intrigued.

Another issue I had with the game was that you had to use a pad-controlled "cursor" to issue movements and stuff. It feels very drudgy when you're used to computer mouse.

I'll give the demo another shot sometime.

There are a lot of games on the 3DS that make it worth buying:

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
Fire Emblem: Awakening
Shin Megami Tensei IV
Bravely Default
Paper Mario: Sticker Star
Super Mario 3D Land
Mario & Luigi Dream Team
Rune Factory IV
New Super Mario Bros. 2
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon

There are some great eShop titles too:

Cave Story
Pushmo
Crashmo
SteamWorld Dig
Gunman Clive
Crimson Shroud

Plus the three Gameboy Color Zelda games on the Virtual Console:
Link's Awakening, Oracle of Ages, and Oracle of Seasons

And of course, you can play the entire DS library on it as well.

I bought my 3DS XL last June, and I play it almost every day on my 40 minute train ride to and from work.
