Why do developers find programming ladders so hard? Because it really shouldn't be, unless they were complete retards when designing their engine. I mean, if they only have one height level then I can understand the lack of ladders, but both ME and ME2 at least appear to support multiple heights, so it shouldn't even be an issue. All they'd need is a bit of code added to their collision detection that checks if the player is trying to run into a ladder, and if so move them up.

now i'm reminded of furious discussions on the lack of a z-axis on the bioboards (pre-social and definitely pre-EA; don't remember the game).

It's because of the way it messes up AI. Look at how Alpha Protocol enemies behave around and with ladders, it's a mess.

In ME 2, Shepard is just a Dr. Phill on a spaceship, from which he is totally disconnected, just like how disconnected he feels like regarding exploration and science. Basically, Shepard is a very 2 dimensional ignorant character, who seems more like someone who has never been in space in his entire life and doesn't know anything about it at all.

The more time I played ME2, it became clear, that Shepard doesn't really belong in space at all. He never even makes a reference to traveling to other systems and galaxies and he gains absolutely no points of mapping the galaxy slowly and painfully, like a 9-5 worker at the conveyor belt. He also comes off as a clueless idiot about everything, beside aiming and trying to figure out, which of his team members he should fuck.
And that's another horrible point of ME2 (and the entire ME series). It seems like, your character living in the 22nd century in the "mass effect age", or born on a space station etc.. and yet the entire galaxy is unkown to him, while reaching any of them is a child's play, if you consider the fact, that each system contains worlds, gates and fuel depots. It's like growing up in USA, and you have never seen a map, and you have never heard about Texas or Seattle and never been outside of your own house. There is no known; somewhat known; unkown parts of this universe, beside the Omega portal. The galaxy is entirely dead, with no other ships to communicate with, only 1 enemy flagship. There is a mentioning of "Turian interceptors" and in the first ME, there are ships stationed at the Citadel, but they are all static.

Now, here is my bitch about ME3. It seems like, it will be centered around Earth, and no matter how much you have done in space, no matter that Shepard is born in an age, where galaxy-wide travel is like going down to the local stop&shop, I can safely bet, that the universe will be unknown again, he will have no fucking clue about planets or resources, because he is gonna come off again as an arrogant idiot, who asks stupid questions, and beside shooting everything and fucking his teammates, he is otherwise just a psychiatrist who can shoot. He will only explore the system to build a better shield or blow up another factory, but otherwise, he couldn't give a rat's ass about planets or systems or finding something new. He will come off as someone, who just uses his ship, like others use a bus ride to work. He gets on the bus, and gets off at the destination, and it doesn't matter which town he passed through, he only cares about the final destination.

This is why the badly implemented useless planet scanning and traveling to unknown systems feels like it has nothing to do with the story or the game, Shepard doesn't give a fuck about it, never mentions it, gains nothing from it, unless he finds shit to blow up, or pick someone up he can fuck later.

But, you know how those "investigate" options on the left side of the dialogue wheel that never seem to really "flow" with the real conversation taking place almost exclusively on the right side of the wheel? They're there for the players, so if the player don't know what a mass effect core is, they can ask, and it's the main reason why Mass Effect failed to do the "cinematic experience" thing. Luckily we got Alpha Protocol to show everyone how it was done. Thorton knows his shit and he doesn't give a fuck if the player don't. Read the dossiers and stuff and hang on.

Also you're not Jim Cojones. You're not even Melcar. Or Martin. Who are you?

Anyone can explain to me, what was the point of writing all the info on all those planets?

Each planet has a big description and sometimes a story attached, but you can't land on them, you can't do anything else, but mine it. Seems like an awful lot of time and money wasted for nothing.

And most of them aren't even worth visiting at all. Like 90% of them.

At one point, you get more than enough of all the resources (except the Element Zero, which will become abudant, once you find out where are those planets mostly located) and the entire scanning thing is just annoying and a waste of time. 2 things keep people scanning :
1. finding a planet to land on to shoot things for the sake of action, sometimes finding an upgrade to the same damn rifle or pistol you gonna use throughout the game. (And you won't really notice much difference, especially if you use a mixture of more than one gun or biotic powers + teammate powers. )
2. making each system 100% searched, but there is really no benefit doing so, you won't get any recognition/points/upgrades for doing it.

Even if the scanning would be less annoying the way it was implemented, the idea of going around in the universe to "explore" is as much rewarding as going on detours in Dragon Age: Origins, and only finding a goddamn "firesalt" in the rubble , as a reward.

Well you nailed it turul, and that's why I really don't get the "Mass effect 2 is a shit RPG but a decent shooter with nice space opera setting" crowd. (more like soap opera am i right???) :M

Enough has been said about the shooter part, which is badly designed corridor popamole shit. But the setting is also completly lifeless, sterile, boring and dull, devoid of exploration, sense of danger or adventure.

This is partly because of the ridiciously bad design by Bioware, who haven't managed to create a decent gameworld since Baldur's Gate 2. Everything feels small and constrained. Take the Citadel for example. Fuck yeah, I can visit a gigantic space station, sprawling with millions of inhabitants from different species. Oh wait. All I get to see from that Babylon 5 on steroids ist some generic market square, a few offices and bars, and two or three quest related linear all-combat areas. Just compare that with Athkathkla in Baldurs Gate 2, where you could spend hours just wandering around exploring every crook and Nanny and find new places and quests.

So this is one major problem. But I also think that the whole concept of the game world, the art design, the design of aliens and spaceships makes for one of the worst Sci-fi settings I ever encountered in books, films or video games. "Traveling around space feels like taking the bus to work" sums it up pretty nicely.

oh, and you are not Jim Cojones.

3. Superior combat options

We like the idea of specialised classes, but we also like being able to pull a trigger without wondering whether our high level Biotic has the right shaped finger. BioWare has made all weapons available to all classes in Mass Effect 3, though grunt characters will be able to carry more, but has compensated for this with a greater breadth of ability upgrades, plus some new gun customisation options. Ergo, Rambo Shepards won't feel constrained, but Sun Tzu Shepards won't find the combat one-dimensional.

Return of ME 1? Is this a result of listening to their loyal fanbase, or finally realizing, that their fanbase is a giant kindergarten and it's better not to listen to them?


So...ME had plenty of customization options , which team member carries which gun with what sort of upgrades, although it wasn't even near to be perfect, but they took it away for ME2, for a completely retarded selection screen, with completely retarded custom profile ideas, such as an infiltrator can't carry a rifle. Yeah ok, he can pull the trigger of a pistol or a submachine gun, but he can't use a rifle. Give me a break!

And all these new ideas of what to cut out of ME 2 has a lot to do with Bioware listening to their fans. They are mostly spoiled 8-13 year olds with a Cheetos smell , armed with an XBOX 360 and their mom's credit card, and they are really the best and most dependable customers Bioware has ever had.

That's why we have abominations like DA2 in the first place.

Yup.

Writing for the sake of writing, near as I can tell. It's kinda like how in the Harry Potter books there's a bunch of unimportant classmates that still have names just to make the school feel big.
