  1. Goldchest 0.5 availaible

Hi All, I have the new version available now. The main focus of this release is collision detection fixes and combat AI. I also fixed a number of issues including an installer issue with Windows 64 bit if were running Java 32 bit. I also added animations to the movement in the first...
  2. Goldchest 0.5 in progress

Well the game engine rules can be adjusted. But the way I would do it is to give the player something like 80% chance on the usage of the ability. And then use the usage count as a bonus to push it to 99%. Something like that. Yeah I agree I would want to avoid too much grinding and farming...
  3. Flash sucks, right?

Yes actually HTML5 is not a bad candidate. This is a great up and coming tech. It's still a wait-and-see how well Microsoft ends up supporting it though, and JavaScript can be very painful to develop larger projects in.
  4. Flash sucks, right?

I chose Java for Goldchest because I wanted easy cross platform for Mac, Linux and Windows. Flash is pretty good in this area as well with a few caveats. - Support is spotty under Linux. - It's can be slow sometimes - usually under firefox - There's no 3D toolkits that I know of (if you...
  5. Goldchest 0.5 in progress

Hi all, Just thought I'd touch base to let people know I'm still alive and working on the goldchest project. Sorry it's been a while - I've been buried at my "real" job. :? Thanks to copx for some good ideas. I've improved the movement system. Now you can designate areas within a...
  6. Gold Chest update 0.4

Yeah I waffle on this one as well. It does make navigation and collision detection a lot more complicated but on the other hand it allows for more interesting 'dungeon' areas. What I'll do is add a setting to turn that on or off. Thanks.
  7. Gold Chest update 0.4

Hi copx, "Why is this part of the engine? The Gold Box engine was also used to make sci-fi games (Buck Rogers 1 & 2). I don't think game specific parts like your generic D&D fantasy classes here should be part of the core engine. " It's not actually but I don't have everything documented...
  8. Gold Chest update 0.4

Hi all, Goldchest 0.4 is available for download. There are few significant improvements in this release. * The game is now provided with a Java based installer so you don't need to have Java3D installed - the game installer will install those files for your. This should work fine for Linux...
  9. Gold Chest update 0.3.1

Hi everyone, Goldchest 0.3.1 is a minor update. I changed the way the game is deployed from using a jar file to using a batch file. This is makes it easier for anyone wanting to tinker with the game map files since all the game files are in folders now. I documented the game map file...
  10. Gold Chest update 0.3 ready

Sorry, I forgot to mention that you need Java3d. https://java3d.dev.java.net/binary-builds.html That's probably the reason it doesn't start up.
  11. Gold Chest update 0.3 ready

Thanks. Well there are various old games ported all the time. Check http://retroremakes.com/ But Goldchest is not a port - it's a from scratch redesign. I'm actually pretty far along now. I should have a workable game engine before Christmas. Once I have a few days off in a row I can cover...
  12. Gold Chest update 0.3 ready

Yeah the game runs as a jar file which means it uses the defaults for memory. Can you check game.log ? It would show an exception in there. I'm working on a proper installer.
  13. Gold Chest update 0.3 ready

Yeah. The files are not backward compatible yet. The game is still in Alpha. If you had an older version you need to delete the old data files. If you didn't have an old version it might be that Java is not set with enough memory on your machine. I'll get the next release up this weekend...
  14. Gold Chest update 0.3 ready

Actually I plan to do another release in a week or so. My plan is to make this the first "editable" release. I'm working on the documentation so you'd be able to modify and create your own maps and interactions in the game. Stay tuned. :)
  15. Gold Chest update 0.3 ready

Thanks. Well there are a few things like experimenting with buying skills and equipment and there's a barrel that you can use the interact option now with. There are a couple of places now where you can encounter monsters although the combat itself doesn't do much now. ;) More info to follow.
