...except it didn't look like this. I played an older version with different graphics, but I can't find any screenshots from that version. It's the one that the images in the avatar gallery came from.

Same here. Mi cousin got it when he got his first PC (together with Total Annihilation and Blade Runner, my first RTS and Adventure games), he had no idea what the hell turns, action points or all those numbers meant.

Trying to get out of the cave with the generic talker was some serious lulz, using stimpacks or flares on rats. Then took the dumb guy and grunted his way to Junkyard, had to borrow the game myself after that point.

First "RPG":

(Shinning Force, Megadrive/Genesis)

But first RPG, well, yeah:

(You know what this is.)

I had a PC in home, but for "real" gaming, I started on Atari, then jumped to MegaDrive. Played a lot of JRPGs and all that (and still do), and then, played Fallout 1. As a child, I didn't quite understand how the game worked (and also didn't really understand English, beyond the very basics), so the first time I played, as far as I rembember, I didn't go too far in it. Two or three years later I rediscovered the CD and, with it, "discovered" the genre.

I also got started with games like Shining Force and Phantasy Star. I don't quite remember if those were my first rpgs ever, but I do remember being concious about the fact that those were rpgs.
There was also a dungeon crawler Shining game as well, it was very cool from what I remember. Well, all games were cool for me when I was a kid.
