Arcane
Arms, Armistice and Revolutions is a minimod for Darkest Hour focused on WW1 and the Interwar. Along other things, it features some interesting events for Germany in its 1933 "Day of Decision" scenario where you might choose to deviate from how things went historically. And that is exactly what this Let's Play will be about.
This OP will contain mostly fluff on stuff I just missed taking screenshots of. The graphical update proper will be in the next post.
Intro
The German people had long suffered betrayals throughout the early twentieth century, first at the hands of Italy in the Great War, then by his own citizens in the Dolchstoßlegende. The people spoke up, and revolution began! But before the revolution fully took hold, Germany was betrayed once again by the leftists, the Social Democratic Party. As a result of the Weimar Republic, Germany lay in ruins after the war suffering under the Tyranny of Versailles and forced to unfairly admit blame for a war. As an insult to injury, the victorious entente then offered 'aid' in reconstruction only to withdraw it a moment later and demand war reparations. The people could only watch as the hated French took over the Ruhr in 1923 while the government did nothing. The traitorous Weimar Republic seemed to collapse as Communists and National Socialists both rallied the people to revolt, given promises by the army of support. They were nothing but empty words. Now, it has been another ten years under the Weimar Republic. Another ten years of economic ruin, famine, mismanagement, and humiliation. The people can not take anymore injustice. The country is at a standstill, with daily skirmishes and protests organized by Communist and Nationalist Socialist militias. Both ideologically opposed parties now find themselves in a position to lead the Reichstag. Will Germany embrace communism and overturn the unjust Bourgeoisie societies that ruined him? Will Germany be drawn in by the National-socialists who promises law and order in a new German Reich? Or, worse, will Germany be betrayed once again in another Dolchstoßlegende?
The complete disappearance of Adolph Hitler in 1924 was a mystery never truly answered. Even with the loss of their charismatic leader, the Nazis were far from defeated and radicalism did not take a step back. The 1929 crash made things even worse, but this time, the lack of a charismatic figurehead like Hitler has greatly weakened the National-socialists and they failed to draw as much support as they would have done had their Fuhrer not disappeared. Yet, they continued to fight, involved in clashes both against the near collapsing Weimar Republic and against the communists. Everything was reaching a boiling point, a crucial moment in history where events happening over the course of only one year would define the future for many decades to come.
This year is 1933, Germany lies on the verge of a civil war. Communists and Nazis have now engaged into violent, open combat in the streets while the people stop giving any credibility that still was left to the Weimar Republic. The German communists managed to unite under the leadership of a man the Nazis now had nobody capable of matching in his charisma and ability of drawing crowds to take direct action. In desperation, the Weimar Republic attempted to hold the reins by giving concessions to the Nazis, which only worsened their already fragile situation.
Millions of unemployed workers were a force to be reckoned with. With most of them drawn by the communists, the final strike against the decrepit republic was swift and decisive. In a few days, the revolutionary commitee rapidly seized power, as the capitalist nations gazed upon such development of one of the greatest industrial powers of the world becoming a new socialist power aghast. Many probably were considering to intervene quickly to crush such revolution, but when Stalin publicly signed the alliance treaty with the new German socialist state, their plans were forgotten under desks, for they wouldn't dare to take such a risk, and tried instead to resort to appeasement.
A mistake they would regret greatly in the coming years.
However, not all was well for the new regime. The revolution was not fully endorsed by the population, and manipulated by the old elites, millions rose in open rebellion. Massive dissent and insurgency marked the start of this new socialist order, just like they marked all the dark times of the Weimar Republic. The old reactionaries were defeated in the field of battle, but only temporarily, for the German Civil War would still rage for many years, with Nazis and conservatives resorting to guerrilla warfare as a powerful counter-revolutionary force.
Under such turbulent times, the leader of the German socialist state, Ludwig Renn, still more influenced by ideology than by the allure of power and convenience of realpolitik, sympathizes with the ideals of Trotsky, particularly that the revolution must not be a national, but an Internationalist affair. Even with all the difficulties against rebels and counter-revolutionaries, he has great plans for Europe, and perhaps one day, the entire world.
Through 1934 a storm was brewing. A new revolutionary Spring was about to begin.
