Was KOTOR even worth a play? I fucking hate Bioware games, Reddit in the extreme. I did enjoy Mass Effect 1 and 2 because it was a fun shooter though.

The writing in KOTOR seems stupid as fuck, which has been par for the course in the three Bioware games I've actually played through (BG1, ME1 and 2).

Sad about Beamdog though for real. I haven't played their remasters, I used a simple widescreen mod for BG1, Planescape and Fallout which did the job, but the enhanced editions are a must when recommending them to other people, IMHO. I can't tell people to play this oldy but goody and then give them a laundry list of mods. I've even bought PS EE as a gift for people and it remains unplayed, pissed me off for real.

Beamdog is shit.
Just stick to the widescreen mods and other community fixes.

Don't listen to the pretentious safe space douche above.
Play both Kotor games.
Kotor 1 is classic Star Wars fun. Do not expect anything world shattering or revolutionary. Still a great story.
Kotor 2 is where things get interesting (and also dark). Avellone writing at its best, a deconstruction of Star Wars itself. Great story, lots of dialogue, sinister plots, serviceable combat (again, nothing extraordinary).

I wonder how did Kotor age. Some time ago I tried to replay New Vegas that I absolutely loved 15 years ago but now I dropped it after a few hours. The story and writing still excellent, doubly so in the currentyear GenZ sea of shit, but the moment-to-moment stuff was almost unplayable for me, especially the combat. Fucking awful.

Probably will wait for the remake, I'm sure it's coming out soon :burningdogmeme:

Man, if even new vegas has too much clunk for you now, knights of the old republic will drive you completely bonkers

Not very well. They feel very "boxed in" in that special early 3D way, much more so than many of its contemporaries. The movement is clunky and the UI is a clear downgrade from the IE games. The cutscenes and animations are pretty good and the story works if you're in the mood for classic Star Wars, but don't expect any depth.

In my experience Baldur's Gate and many other early 3D RPGs like VTM:B, Gothic, Morrowind and Deus Ex aged much better than KOTOR, and even New Vegas in many respects.

I would also add Fallout 1 and 2 in there.
It's just something about that post apocalyptic atmosphere that is really gripping...
They are among the best RPGs of all time but not directly relevant to KOTOR like its contemporaries or Baldur's Gate. That's why I didn't mention them.

I do agree though, classic Fallout has aged very well.

KotOR is a solid 5/10 game. The sequel is more like 3/10. They were bad compared to the classics being released around that time, and they don't provide enough replay value to go back to them 20 years later. They were good for normies who didn't know any better, and they probably seemed a lot better if you were coming to them during the post-Troika pre-Kickstarter drought.

Kotor was and is still worth it, 1 was a fun RPG adventure, simple but satisfying, 2 had really cool writing that still holds up. Sure it's not a fucking literary masterpiece, but if you think Kotor 2 writing was bad, then in comparison pretty much every RPG ever made had dogshit writing, and at this point you should stop playing any story-focused games, leave Codex and go read some books, dumbfuck.

None of which is surprising since it is a console game built for the original xbawks, the KB + M controls are a tacked on feature. If it was first meant for PC it would feel far closer to NWN1 the engine of which KOTOR was using, especially regarding the camera (system/perspective) used.
