Useful New Vegas Mods

Hey Codex, been camping the Nexus for useful mods to streamline the New Vegas experience and specifically looked out for mods that are not retarded and actually make very reasonable/effective changes to the game. Hope others who have keener eyes can share their own set up as well. I know there are mods being recommended already but they are scattered in epic threads full of other things like HATRED AND LIES. Enjoy.

New Vegas Mod Manager
http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35726

Enables load order sorting of mods and I feel it is essential. Easy installation and use.

Fellout
http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34888

Environmental and atmospheric lighting changes. Removes damn orange tint from the lighting palette and makes nights darker. Single .esp file aka easy installation and use.

MTUI
http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34902

User interface mod that does not add nor complicate features. What it does is intelligently scale menus, font size, and other elements of the interface to fit the display area of a PC experience. I like it because it is bareboned, but there are other good UI mods out there if you do not like this one.

Ammo Ingredients As Loot
http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35378

If you use repair to create ammo you would have realised by now the economy of ingredients is kind of spastic in the game. I am not saying I need a ton of stuff dropping so I can get free ammo but the sheer rarity and neglible amounts (apparently only appears in stores, which I have not seen) of primers, for example, makes ammo creation nothing more than a 'ammo converting' exercise. If that is fine with you do not get this mod. What this mod does is add token amounts of rarer ammo ingredients to certain container types (with random loot) which makes ammo creation more plausible and is balanced very well so far.

P.S: The mods I listed are those with high chances to be supported and updated as time goes by, though there are some out there that do add useful things but are more temporary and will probably will be replaced soon. And also though they are all in development, they are stable in my experience. I would love it if anyone can reply to this thread once high resolution texture packs (not the NMC copy paste one) and distant land lod mods are released. Thanks!

Double P.S: Also if anyone spots a stealing mod that is based on faction reputation - does not lower karma if you are hated by that faction - please do share. The current ones just negates all karma effects from all stealing.

Yeah primer boxes were a bit weird for me - first I saw none and then when I didn't really need them anymore (way too many caps I could ever spend, so I could buy all the store inventories many times over) there suddenly were quite a few of them on multiple vendors. Probably just shit luck since it wouldn't make sense to put the small pistol primers etc. to appear only after certain level.

MTUI was essential in Fallout 3 and is still essential now (though to Bethesda's minor credit not as essential as the UI mods in Oblivion I guess).

Nothing else interesting for me right now though. Admittedly I don't use mods much anyway... UI mods and unofficial patches are usually enough for moi.

If you're tired of the horrible textures in NV, a useful script has been created to copy the high-def ones originally created by NMC for use with Fallout 3.

http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/ ... p?id=35645

The instructions are a little confusing, and I had to manually use NMC's ArchiveInvalidation file myself to get them to work in NV, but once they're in place the world looks much, much better IMO.

Hi Crispy, thanks for the link! I know that thingy exists but I am holding my breath for a less 'scrapped-together' version. Actually the worry I have is that this method might actually produce even more glaring low texture shit (new game assets) due to comparison beside good resolution stuff, going by the comments in the script's nexus page. Is that true?

I've only been running it for a couple of hours, but I haven't noticed too big a difference in quality between the improved textures and the stock ones so far. So many of them are covered it's hard to tell which are which, honestly.

It's easy to disable them, too -- simply by deleting or moving the ArchiveInvalidation.txt file.

What else is there? I got MTUI and while bigger menus/smaller font is nice, the UI is still a pita. At least something to make the aid/misc inventory tabs less of a clusterfuck?

Also very useful:

There's a scripting oversight that causes cards you find or purchase to linger in your inventory, rather than be added to your Caravan deck. This mod resolves that issue.

Don't understand the real hate for the UI. I actually like it's clunkiness as it fits the primitive nature of the electronics. So you have to scroll, boo hoo. It's not even that hard to do anything either on it. :shrugs:

@made: PipWare UI New Vegas Edition - http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34913

It collates much more information in more intuitive groupings on the pipboy, I think. Might be what you are looking for. Also, thanks for that fix the bloody cards were clogging up my inventory list!

@topher: Yup I saw that one but I am not hopeful that modder is going to do anything about it in the near future :(

@commie: Expanded Menus - http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35049

"Expands the dialogue, barter, recipe, inventory, options and tutorial screens. Suited better for widescreens, without the changing of the font size or different dialogue background crap. Stays true to what the Fallout vanilla design was, but expands it to better suit it for larger screens." MIGHT be useful for you if you want to keep to the vanilla interface!

The UI doesn't bother me in the least bit either. I remember scrolling thought the inventory the exact same way in the original Fallout. The only change I wouldn't mind seeing is making the actually scroll bar a little wider because sometimes I want to use that instead of my mouse-wheel and it's sliver thin.

@commie and topher: what resolution are you guys running the game on? for me, on 1920x1080 the vanilla UI makes it look like I am playing some Sesame Street game with huge blocky fonts :P

Yea I saw that one, but from the screenshots it seemed to do just what MTUI does.

It does what MTUI does AND puts all info from the stats tab into one screen.

The dll performance fixers are also a must get.

I'm playing the game on a significantly lower resolution, 180x720 widescreen, and it doesn't strike me as blocky. It could of course be smaller but I don't find it troublesome as is.

Wow the NMC texture pack ported to NV really does make a shitload of difference! Regret being lazy and not doing it off the bat ;p

1600 x 1200 on ye olde 17 inch CRT. Fonts are big, but don't seem that blocky. I actually prefer bigger fonts as don't have to squint in the dark when pulling long sessions.

I have a good scroll wheel and so the side bar size doesn't bother me either. Dunno, hell if it's moddable and you don't like the vanilla UI then no problem changing at least. That's the only thing Bethesda Shitbryo engines have over anything else by miles: the sheer ease of modding.

Personally, I'm waiting for a NV version of Explosive Entry. Being able to blow open containers with explosives instead of lockpicking them made the game ten times more fun and made the fairly useless explosives skill a must-have.

I don't really see the point in that script. I just extracted all the textures to the NV data folder and used the ArchiveInvalidation.txt file that comes with the mod - worked fine for me, looks great - especially with fellout.

Also, the fantastic DarNified UI is on it's way:

http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1131897-wipzbeta-darnified-ui-nv/

Hasn't been uploaded to the nexus yet as he's still working on it - very soon though.

BTW - I'm running this shit @ 5760x1080 across 3x 23" screens (nVidia surround) with the texture pack + fellout, oooh it's fucking glorious :smug: (once I figured out how to get the fucking thing setup - FOV's and whatnot)

That script is simply for people that don't feel like downloading all the textures again and recopying them. It automatically determines your Fallout 3 and NV folders and copies them for you, then supposedly creates the proper .txt file to invalidate the original textures.

I hope he fixed that last part.

Of the UI mods, do any of them make it possible to sort food items from the stat boosters or medikits? Whenever I start getting hungry or thirsty, it's a huge pain in the ass having to scroll through all the other assorted trash I'm carrying trying to find some edibles in my "Aid" inventory.
