What are some good turn-based tactics games, or turn-based strategy games with involving turn-based military battles?

I know of JA, SS, and Xcom. But I wonder if there are any that are on the army-level, not just controlling one or two squads?

And are there any online multiplayer such games?

STEEL PANTHERS:

WORLD WAR 2

MAIN BATTLE TANK

WORLD AT WAR

SP:WW2 is, surprise suprise, platoon/company-level in WW2.
SP:MBT is, platoon/company-level after WW2 upto 2020.
SP:WAW is company/battalion-level in WW2.

All are free to download. Google is your friend. UI is archaic but don't let it fool you, the games are solid gold and pretty easy to get into. Multiplayer by hotmail or email, some versions allow TCP/IP or IPX play aswell.

After that:

THE OPERATIONAL ART OF WAR, VOL 3

Anything from ACW to WW3 in 21st century. Turns can be from half-a-day upto a week long, one hex can be from few hundred meters all the way to 50km. Very robust engine, there's a scenario which depicts the whole of Barbarossa - it includes every single division and special brigade that Red Army had and on Wehrmacht side it includes units down to regimental level, iirc. Game requires some knowledge of military equipment before hand. Hordes of scenarios for it.

The Combat Mission games by Battlefront are simultaneous turn-based games. They go from platoon level battles to brigade level battles.

The best are the second and third games in the series. The latest one (Shock Force) just plain isn't as good a design, even though they fixed the major bugs and UI problems.
