I didn't at all like the way TW2 handled the DLC, even if the added quests were a lot of fun. I guess it's nice to get some new weapons and armor with the DLCs, but not when it makes everything else in the game obsolete for half of the game. I'd rather have an added challenge than something that just makes the game easier.
Having a ton of optional stuff also pretty much fucked up the game's balance and item progression beyond repair, not that they were very good to begin with. You got a dozen different DLCs giving different kinds of free and powerful items and abilities, save imports that also gave you weapons, the Dark Mode with its own special items, the Enhanced Edition with lots of added content and equipment, and in between them about a billion different patches that all tried to fix the combat system in a different way, buffing one part of it and nerfing another and hoping to achieve something with it. The final fights of the game were always the same, but depending on the version of the game you could be a level 20-something character with a sword that does 50 damage (just pulling numbers out of my ass here) or a level 35 character whose sword does 90 damage and who's also got a Quen sign that incinerates people, an Aard sign that freezes people and an armor set that you could easily afford because the downloadable Blue Stripes jacket meant that you didn't have to spend your money on anything during the first 15 hours of the game. You could go out of your way to get your hands on a legendary sword only to find out that you've already found a better one from some random cave. I bet Josh Sawyer has nightmares about it.
Cosmetic changes (like that hairstyle DLC and Yennefer's face) are all well and good in my books, and having those as DLC isn't necessarily that bad, but yeah, a PR stunt's a PR stunt.
