~Early Modern Warfare~
The age of the musket brought down the feudal model of warfare and tamed the man on horseback. North Italy acted as a crossroads of source for military science as the great powers of the day fought against each other in the Italian Wars and from the competition of their military trends emerged a new tactical consensus that would dominate europe for centuries.
The French had the best heavy cavalry and field artillery in the world. Coupled with the offensive capability of the Swiss pikemen, a rare thing for infantry in those days, made them initially unstoppable.
The spanish however adopted the arquebus more readily than the French. Requiring little training, it allowed them to raise massive armies for their campaigns in Italy. Along with their tradition for pikemen and light infantry it allowed them to face off successfully against the French, especially in Pavia, where fieldworks proved to be the antidote for french artillery. Having little cavalry of their own, they recruited mercenary greek and albanian light cavalry, the Stradioti, who eschewed armor and charged at a gallop, taking infantry in the flanks and even routing their opposing heavy cavalry many times.
The age of the knight was over and even the French abandoned their crossbows in favor of the arquebus. The new Pike&Shot formations would dominate european warfare until the improvement of firearms, the adoption of the bayonet and field artillery as well as the invention of a new tactical doctrine by one man.
Gustavus Adolphus.
I assume you all know what the 30 Years War was. One of the most savage religious conflicts that left parts of Germany entirely depopulated, saw Hapsburg ambitions curbed and France rise as the leading European power.
We will be playing as Sweden, without a doubt the prime player of the era and one of the most powerful armies, second only to the tenacity of the veteran spanish tercios.
In this mod I created a script that has all of the military buildings built for every faction after the first turn, so the AI can recruit it's elite units, pikemen and musketeers without relying on militia for the first parts of the game. Despite playing on very hard campaign difficulty I also increased the gold reserves for the major enemy factions a lot and lowered the upkeep of many units, to better simulate the meteoric rise of army numbers in that era.
Despite being a Protestant power, our first war will be against Denmark. Their army is tied up on their mainland, preparing to march against the catholic army of Tilly, the most ingenious imperial commander.
Our aim is not only to smash Popemole ambition and corruption but also to create a new Swedish Empire that will stand against the test of time. Or at least until the Russians decide to come knocking.
We will train a force at Goeteborg and start moving south towards Malmo, taking any danish forts that lie in our way.
The main army will be raised in Kalmar and led by King Gustavus. Their job will be to storm the enemy city.
Protestantism is on the rise in the Holy Roman Empire. Power has now shifted to Hapsburg Vienna who, along with Spain and Bavaria, will carry the bulk of the Catholic cause on their shoulders.
Despite the French Wars of Religion that saw the Huegenots destroyed, France will make the Protestant cause their own, hoping for gains in Franche Comte and the Rhine. And to strike a blow against Hapsburg Austria and Spain, whose dominions encircle them.
Historically, Cardinal Richeliu was Gustavus' prime supported and funder. Without french gold there would have been no swedish army landing in Pommerania.
King Gustavus takes his forces from Norrkoping south to Kalmar, where he will merge with the regiments recruited there and move against the Danes.
This is no mere saber rattling, imperialist forces will soon defeat the Bohemians at White Mountain and then crush the Danish.
Another feature of this mod are supply wagons. Each army moves on supplies and has varying situations depending on their supply level. The lower it is the less morale your troops have.
The army from Goeteborg has began it's march. Notice the supply level. When one supply wagon runs out you will need to bring another or spend a few turns in a city to replenish your stocks. Maintaining your supply lines is crucial.
The army of Gustavus is ready. The elite swedish regiments are known by their colors. This army consists of 2 yellow brigades (pikemen and musketeers), 2 red brigades, 2 blue brigades and 2 regular brigades. It is also accompanies by 1 battery of heavy artillery and 1 of Leather Cannons, swedish field artillery.
The Dutch was of independence saw the genius of Maurice of Nassau defeating the unsupported spanish occupation forces despite the incompetence and sometimes outright cowardice of many of his countrymen. He was the first man to drill his muskets in firing lines, inspired by old roman military thought and also inspired Gustavus' own military innovations.
Gotenburg, the northernmost danish fort is seized by Carl Peter.
And this is how the war begins. It will not end until all of Denmark is annexed and our armies are ready to strike into Germany.
Notice how Carl's supplies are dwindling and his men are forced to forage.
It is then the King's turn to take an enemy fort after it's garisson has abandoned it.
The northern march continues as another fortification falls to our army. Their garissons are probably forming up an army to stop our advance.
We will follow the roads towards Malmo and drive the Danish away from Skane once and for all.
Lund, the hometown of LundB, 21st century North Korean superspy and pop idol rapist was seized by a small scouting force.
The rebellion of Aachen was quickly quelled by the Spanish. The Hapsburg would never allow such a strategic location to fall to Protestant hands. Being close to the Rhine and flanking the Netherlands as well as France put it in a not so envied position.
A small fleet is tasked to carry reinforcements and supplies to Carl Peter as he continues his march south.
And the garisson of Goeteburg sallies out to defeat the Norwegian raiding party to the North.
Our forces consist of 3 pike and 2 shooter regiments. We create two brigades in the center and position the reverse pike regiment in the flanks.
The Norwegian guns outrange us. We will have to move closer.
Marching drums begin to beat (mod feature) as the pikemen are ordered to advance in formation.
The musketeers provide cover for the pikemen as they march but are outclassed by the enemy freeshooters.
The second musketeer regiment forms up and prepares to unleash a volley against the enemy pistoliers before they can trot out of combat.
And the first engagement between the infantry occurs at the foot of the hill, as norwegian peasant spearmen face off against disciplined swedish pikes.
The second regiment is ordered to the center, to either outflank the force to their right or attack the musketeers at their front, depending on how the enemy reacts.
Smoke is thick as the the two sides fire against each other.
A force of enemy spearmen closes with our muskets who are ordered to withdraw. The other musket regiment moves to the flank to cover them and devastate the enemy formation with a few volleys.
The infantry lines are now fully engaged in the center.
Caught between the enveloping fire lanes of our two musket formations, the enemy spearmen crumble and make a run for it.
Having fought their way through the enemy infantry, the pikemen now charge the enemy muskets who also rout.
The field is ours, but the battle proves to be an indecisive victory without cavalry to run down the fleeing foe.
The man himself.
Now in action. The enemy are severely outnumbered, but it will be a learning experience.
Our armies are arrayed as following.
The left flank is taken by the two yellow brigades.
Followed by the heavy artillery and the red brigades.
Which are in turn flanked by the Leather Cannons and the blue brigades.
The regular brigades take up the rightmost flank and will move to envelop the enemy.
The musketeer lines begin to fire as the enemy cavalry comes in range. The artillery follows suit.
The Danes charge in a deep column.
Unfortunately bullets don't pass through one man and into the next.
Time for the push of the pike.
Stirring sight.
After a short engagement and flanking musket fire, the danes break and run.
In the right flank our regular musketeers are also flanking another pike square and causing massive casualties.
Our boys are ordered forward to frustrate any attempt of the enemy regrouping.
The King himself charges the back of an enemy formation and sends them fleeing.
The enemy centre crumbles at the sight of our advancing pikes.
And are caught between an exchange of fire.
But our men keep bravely marching forward in the face of enemy bullets.
The last of their musketeers is caught by a full volley and devastated.
Once the second line opens fire the outcome is as good as decided.
The enemy lost half it's forces while our losses are not even worth considering. Had we any cavalry they would have been fully destroyed.
After the victory our armies keep marching south, towards the city of Malmo.
Danish machete gangs however have sneaked in behind us and are raping fair swedish maidens and burning IKEA manufactories. This will not do.
Wars of the Potato.
A third army is fleshed out from fort garissons and Kalmar to drive out the Danish invaders. Our treasury starts to bleed money. We might need to start developing our economy soon.
Another small fleet sets sail, this time from Kalmar, carrying cavalry reinforcements and supplies for Gustavus.
After seizing Engelholm the army of Carl Peters moves towards our fleet to resupply and sail towards Copenhagen.
We have enough artillery to tackle anything now.
We have chased the enemy force into the forests and will soon slaughter them all.
And even more importantly, Gustavus has finally reached Malmo and prepares to storm the city.
The enemy garrison is small but those Zweihanders will prove to be hell inside the city.
The artillery aims towards the city gates.
It is a hard target but...
The Trace Italiene, developed by italian military engineers to counter heavy artillery, will prove too tough to breach.
All those artillery positions will slaughter our infantry as it marches towards the gates but we have no choice but to attack.
The gate is in it's last throws.
And we have our way in.
The first regiments are ready to move in.
The second wave is prepared and the cannons on the walls open fire.
Glancing shots at first.
But the shots get closer.
The second wave begins it's own doomed march to the distant gatehouse.
More brave patriots are brought down by the enemy defences but they keep facing forward, no thoughts of retreat in their minds.
Almost at the gates now.
The second column also retraces the bloody path of the first.
The trial is over for them, but a new one soon begins.
Burning oil is poured on top of their heads but they steel themselves and march through the flame and into Malmo.
Truest of patriots, relics of another era of Sweden, before their LIBRUL masters sold them wholesale to the nigger rape gangs.
May their sacrifices never be forgotten.
The melee begins.
And the second wave is not too far behind.
The pikemen emerge into the city, marching behind the swedish flag, ready for the bloody battle ahead.
In the narrow city streets they fight the enemy and begin to push him back.
The second wave is flanked by the Greatswords and sharply turn their pikes to meet them.
Combat is close and bloody and many fall.
And the enemy general is killed in the thick of the fighting.
Enveloped and slaughtered wholesale, the Greatswords begin to rout.
But more emerge from their rear.
And enemy pikemen are ready to attack as well.
The greatswords are soon driven away and the blue regiment forms up against the enemy pikes.
Two pike squares meeting like that was called 'Bad War' by the contemporaries of that era. Not hard to see why.
But through superior training and discipline our men manage to drive the enemy back.
The danes attempt to move away but are caught with their backs to the buildings and slaughtered.
Few escape.
Meanwhile the yellow regiment follows a parallel street towards the city center.
The 11th blue regiment follows the danes as they retreat.
Enemy pistoliers have formed up to intercept the yellows.
And the fighting in the streets is as thick as ever.
The yellow regiment bravely charges into the face of the enemy bullets.
The regulars also emerge from the bloodsoaked streets, exhausted but ready.
Soon the last of the enemy are killed and the swedish flag is raised over Malmo.
We aren't niggers.
By capturing the city we now know the locations of the rest of the danish forts. Small, mobile forces will be dispatched to seize them soon.
After capturing Malmo we issue an edict that allows the catholics to practice their religion freely and without fear of machete rape. We aren't in it for God, we're in it for an empire.
Carl Peters will now move against Copenhagen and after a short period of resupplying both our forces will attack the remaining danish held islands before moving to the mainland.
