A decent RPG with decent graphics for free? No way, such a game takes too much dev time for people to make it and just give it away. The best you can do is to check the abandonware sites.

You can't find one that is as good as PtD period. Crashing or not, free or not, good graphics or not.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
If I created a really good game with really good graphics that doesn't crash as often as Prelude to Darkness, I'd sell it for money.

Also, there's still that nice cozy place in the internets where everything is free. Yarrrr!

Why don't you make one yourself?

Oh of course, because making a decent game, with or without good graphics requires the equivalent of years of full-time work, and anyone doing so would quite reasonably expect to be paid for their efforts. Seriously though, why don't you just try making even a graphics engine, or a 5 minute tech demo, before wondering why no-one has made a whole game with good graphics, or with ANY non-ASCII graphics, and then given it away for free.

If by 'good graphics' you mean, say, professionalish for post-1998 or onwards, then that will (usually) take staff (yes before someone says AoD, VD does have a team, and he sure as hell hasn't said anything to indicate that he'll be GIVING the game away). How the hell are you going to pay the staff if you're giving the game away without charge?

I'm sorry for sounding overly obnoxious about this, but your request really is incredibly silly - again, try making a game and you'll see that. The best you can expect is a rogue-like with ASCII graphics, or simple tiles, (I suggest Dwarf Fortress or ADOM), simply because they are the only games that a single person can really hope to make as a hobby these days. There are free graphical RPGs - Dink Smallwood comes to mind - but they are very simplistic and rather short, and if Betrayal at Krondor (see below) doesn't meet your standards, then they sure as hell won't.

Betrayal at Krondor might be your best bet - it doesn't have good graphics by today's standards, but it DOES have graphics. The reason why that is leaps and bounds ahead of any other free (non-pirated) game available is that BaK was actually a commercial game that made a decent profit, but years after its release the developers decided to make it freeware in order to promote their next game - it was never originally a 'free' rpg. To say BaK is a rarity is an understatement - it's basically a once-off. People simply don't give away years of work for free, and to find an entire studio willing to do that (because making a game of that scale requires a team, not just one or two people, and that team either requires salaries - which requires profit and payment - or royalties, which means that you need to get everyone's permission before the game is given away free) is next to impossible.

Edit: of course, I should add that I was never able to get Prelude to Darkness to run on my computer. Just saw Ultima 4 above - another good game, but if Betrayal at Krondor isn't good enough graphically for you (and that is 1996 or so graphics) then that sure as hell won't be!

i have actually tried making a Ultima 4'esque RPG in the early 90's, me and 2 other guys teamed up, one coder, one graphics guy and i made the maps and wrote plotline/quests, but we only got to approx 10% then i moved to another town and one of the other got hit by a car and it all went down the drain.

scripts is long gone, but i still have the map i made and if i search really hard i could maybe find the 3.25 disk with the coding, if i havent saved porn over it or something.

but making good games is a real time drain.

Zombie Survival Z has descent graphics and is an isometric Action-RPG. It can be found here: http://skasoftware.com/

Eternal Daughter can be vaguely construed to be an RPG, so much as Castlevania : Symphony of the Night was. All in all, though, it was a very nice, challenging and fun game. It also had an o.k., but by no means great storyline and its art direction is colorful and kid like (though there is blood and death on occasions), reminiscent of old Genesis or SNES games: http://www.derekyu.com/games/ed.zip

Finally, "Tales of Game's Presents Chef Boyardee's Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden, Chapter 1 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa", is the unofficial sequel to "Barkley Shut Up and Jam!". The game's wacked out premise in which basketball stars can cause apocalypses is hilarious. To quote the creators:

The Great B-Ball Purge of 2041, a day so painful to some that it is referred to only as the "B-Ballnacht". Thousands upon thousands of the world's greatest ballers were massacred in a swath of violence and sports bigotry as the game was outlawed worldwide. The reason: the Chaos Dunk, a jam so powerful its mere existence threatens the balance of chaos and order. Among the few ballers and fans that survived the basketball genocide was Charles Barkley, the man capable of performing the "Verboten Jam"...

Flash forward 12 years to the post-cyberpocalyptic ruins of Neo New York, 2053. A Chaos Dunk rocks the island of Manhattan, killing 15 million. When the finger is put on the aging Charles Barkley, he must evade the capture of the B-Ball Removal Department, led by former friend and baller Michael Jordan, and disappear into the dangerous underground of the post-cyberpocalypse to clear his name and find out the mysterious truth behind the Chaos Dunk. Joined by allies along the way, including his son Hoopz, Barkley must face the dangers of a life he thought he gave up a long time ago and discover the secrets behind the terrorist organization B.L.O.O.D.M.O.S.E.S

Warning, though, it's a JRPG, and is a very traditional one at that: http://www.gamingw.net/forums/index.php?topic=68488.0
