Some people think there's money to be made by mmos:

And who is this company Perpetual? Well all I know is they they seem to have a shit load of money but no track record that I'm aware of. They are currently hiring:
Game systems programmer
Game designer
3D environment artist
Senior Java Online Platform Engineer

If its going to work within the star trek universe, its going to have to be radicaly different than any other mmo's. Everybody cant have their own star ship, even small scale private ships dont exist on the scale they do in the star wars universe. I can see the federation's non aggression thing getting in the way too. And really not only are mmo's dropping like flies, they are getting worse, the best mmo i still played was asherons call 1 and thats ancient.

True. I can actually see this game working more than a lot of other games if done right - for starters, it has an actual active (if severly nerdy) fanbase.

As does Star Wars. And SWG sucks.

I can't see it working at all. For one thing, you have the problem with parties. In Star Trek, parties would be the crew of a ship. In MMOs, parties are mostly picked up people with little to no consistancy based on when people might be playing.

The other problem is all the technical failure plots of Star Trek. The engineer is one of the main characters of the crew, yet who wants to be the bitch who has to crawl down a jefferies tube to fix that critical plasma leak all the time?

I just don't see it working as an MMORPG. I could see it working somewhat with every mission consists of an away team but honestly, there wouldn't be much to do. If you're an engineer, you'd be relegated to fixing the jeffries tube 24/7. I'm sure the same people who enjoy playing healers and tanks in EQ will love that role - though even those classes get more action. On top if it, there wouldn't be any PVP-style stuff or group versus group combat, and what about the phat loot or upgrades? How the heck would that be done? There isn't even a currency in Star Trek.

I just don't see it working. I bet it gets cancelled sometime in the future.

Well, the real problem is that Star Trek really isn't about ACTION these days. It's about politics and drama stuff while dealing with sci-fi-ish problems and dilemas. Really, there shouldn't be a lot of action in the game unless it's Dominion War stuff.
