<strong>[ Free Game ]</strong>

<strong><a href="http://www.teardown.se/" target="_blank">Space Hulk</a></strong> is back and it's free! No, we're not talking the first-person squad shooter, this is a remake of the out of print <a href="http://www.games-workshop.com/" target="_blank">Games Workshop</a> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Hulk" target="_blank">boardgame</a> set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. The fine lads at <a href="http://www.teardown.se/" target="_blank">TearDown</a> have recreated the boardgame for the PC and have just released it. Head <a href="http://www.teardown.se/games/spacehulk/www/download/bin/spacehulk_full_v1.0.zip" target="_blank">here</a> for the download, <a href="http://www.teardown.se/games/spacehulk/Manual.pdf" target="_blank">here</a> for the full manual, and <a href="http://www.teardown.se/games/spacehulk/www/screenshots.html" target="_blank">here</a> for some screenshots.

I choose to believe in baby arm's powers. Stop oppressing my faith. Do not be a hater.

It's a pretty fun little game, though like a lot of games that rely on random rolling there will be times when you just murder the shit out of everything and times when it's like "all five terminators were shooting and they couldn't kill a single one AND EVERYONES GUN JAMMED WHAT THE FUCK"

Also, tactics pretty much seem to be "overwatch the hallways and mow them as they come to you" so it's not the most deep game ever.

Hahah. Yeah...
Games that rely heavily on random things always seem to be deciding in favour of your enemy ;)

So guys, let me ask again.
Is this a good game? Is it challenging? Does it require innovative thinking?

I'm not a huge 40k fan (in fact I know very little about it) but I've heard good things about this game.

Yes. Yes. No. It's simple fun, and it's good that way.

I played quite a lot of this when I was younger, as I recall it is quite good and quite difficult.

EDIT: I am talking about the original Space Hulk computer game. Never played the board game.

It's a sort of simple board game on the PC. It doesn't take long to get into, so it's worth trying to see if you like it.

Space Hulk is a great idea, but it just doesn't have enough meat on it to entertain me beyond 40 minutes every 10 years or so. I guess that is why we get freeware versions of it with AI, unlike bloodbowl, warhammer quest, necromunda, or mordenheim.

I'd cream my pants for a fleshed out single player version of any of those. My MP attempts at those never get beyond trying to schedule a time with other internet nerds.

It reminds me of Space Crusade, which did have a little more to it if you don't mind playing through an emulator. It would be nice to see more of those games being attempted without deviating too far from the originals. DoW was fun but obviously nothing like the tabletop game.

I've considered writing a version of quest before. On the surface it seems like an ideal little project, grid and turn based so no complicated game engine to worry about. The problem was trying to adapt the rules. The GW penchant for writing terribly unspecific and conflicting rules with no underlying scaffolding and bazillions of goofy d6 tables that do god knows what does not go easily into the computer.

This is pretty awesome, pity the flamethrowers don't have a reload though - bit of a pita when they run out. The Genestealer AI seems quite good, I've had a few nasty surprises so far with them flanking me and not going the way I expected them to.

Anyone know if there's a remake of Space Crusade in the works anywhere?

Fun and pretty hard game, but it doesn't have a lot of depth.

I remember playing a game similar to this years ago, with a bit more depth. You controlled an entire squad of marines and could either control a couple of more squads or play it hot seat style with a few friends. You had more freedom in choosing the equipment of the marines, going for a gun/sword, sword/powerglove or heavy bolter for the sergeant for example. There was also a bigger variety of enemies, but genestealers were a real bitch in this game as well IIRC. Anyone know what game I'm talking about? I'd much rather play that game again.

EDIT: Nevermind, Space Crusade seems to be game I was looking for as well.

I can't even get passed the first real mission with two marines where you get to kill stuff. :( My guys take shot after shot and either miss for all their shots and then get taken out by the 2 Gene Stealers that are after them in the bad guys turn or... Nope, that's pretty much all that's happening. Well okay, so sometimes they'll take out a few, only to be raped by the one they didn't kill. There are 20 Gene Stealers on the level and my two guys are supposed to take them all out with pistols, without dying? How does that work? I seem to have the choice between moving, only to have enough AP to get around the corner and do nothing or I sit and wait for them to come to me and hope I take them all out on my turn, or with overwatch.

Positioning and keeping your distance (the genestealers get six moves as opposed to your four, and turn for free) is the key to success. Try to place your guys so that you have two of them covering the same area, gives you a greater chance of killing them in overwatch mode. The game does depend a lot of luck, but if you play conservatively and careful you usually manage.

On a side note, the downloads section and the forums at Teardown are currently disabled. I wonder if Games Workshop pulled the plug on them?

that explains it:

Teardown-website said:
Dear friends.

Our web space provider alerted us today that they have noticed a traffic-rate way further than they would ever expect. At the moment people have downloaded files by a total of 327 gigabytes which is much over the agreement between us and the web space provider. As this is a spare-time project we do not want to upset the people who are nice and friendly to us and so we decided to shut down this page until we find a better solution.

Also a notification from Games Workshop reached us this morning. Until we have sorted everything with them we do not want risk any legal actions against us. So we await further information regarding this matter and kindly ask you to show some patience until we release more information.

Regards
The Teardown team

so, can someone up it on rapidshare? ;)
