Ok you are right. It's not a crappy 4x, it's a crappy RTS. I think because it's stardock peopke give it a free pass to be retarded. None of their games are really that good, and I have them all.

So what's this game like? Any good? Most reviews were quite favorable, but I'm not sure if it's worth investing time in it.

You are too hard on the poor game. Its a decent space based RTS, way more complicated than the average (casual) game. Quite fun in multiplayer too.

But its no MoO2 Im afraid. Nor Homeworld.

It's pretty much shit.

This. Too slow for an RTS (Moments where you just have your thumb up your ass waiting for ships to move/resources to accumulate), too fast for a turn based strategy (By virtue of being real time). To top it off, the combat is really undramatic for space battles. No majestically soaring metal dicks thrusting at one another, they just get to max range for their guns and then immediately stop and start firing and don't move. This kills the spaceporn aspect of it considerably.

It's also involved with Stardock who are shits so that's a bummer. I am not much of a fan of this game bro. Go check out Sword of the Stars. It can be had with all expansions reasonably cheap and has turn based strategic mode and real time tactical battles and does spaceporn fantastically.
