Yes, it's a different kind of damage entirely, but it takes the same overall kind of skill, that of understanding and applying third-class levers, as opposed to the skill involved in using swords/knives and firearms, which are each distinct from the other and more or less related within the skill. Basically, they're different in effect, but the same from a physics perspective; an axe is just a club with a blade.
