Part 2 of RPGVault's feature on E3 2004 vis a vis RPGs is up. In it, Jonric discusses the various games he saw at E3. The general consensus is that everything looks peachy. Here's a blurb on KOTOR2.

For developer Obsidian Entertainment, creating the sequel to BioWare's universally acclaimed original is probably a desirable task and an unenviable one at the same time, the latter because expectations are naturally sky-high. Based on a demo in publisher LucasArts' closed booth, there's every reason for fans to be optimistic the team will deliver. The Sith Lords seems poised to recapture and build upon the compelling feel of its predecessor with a strong story element, ample chance to follow the Dark or Light path as you please, lots of new cool Force powers to enhance the Star Wars experience, competitive visuals and more.

I don't think even BIS refugees will have trouble making a better game than BioWare's KOTOR, especially if they get the same excellent audio production values and engine. There's really nothing for Obsidian to do but improve.

I'd rather they ditch the engine and make something better of their own. But then again, PS:T was built on the awful IE and it turned out a phenomenal game. Plus none of the engines BIS developed were revealed as they all went to cancelled products (and FO engine technically came before BIS was formed), so it's hard to tell whether Obsidian would actually be able to make a solid engine themselves.

Making a new engine takes a lot of times, maybe even years, if they want to milk kotor's success it has to be now :P

Can't argue with that, though it is a bit sad that a game with so much potential has to lose some of it's punch due to a crappy engine.
