You have a heart of stone. :(

What about a multi-headed beast of some sort? As long as it is hitting ass and leg and feels like HEAVAN I will forgive you.

What if I make a two headed golem named "Chainy", would that suffice?

Just two heads? Hmm.

Will it hit ass and leg?

And, OH GOD, will it feel like HEAVAN?

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
What about a Multi-Headed-Dinosaur, you know, those dinosaurs with the long throats. A multi headed brontosaurus. He would at least have *some* dick-like qualities.

You do realize most of these creatures will be represented by single ascii characters, right? Regardless of how many dick heads something has(as if I'd add them in the first place, I'm hoping you people aren't serious), they'd still just be a "D" or something similar on screen. In any event you'll have to get your gay ascii porn somewhere else.

You could describe it in the text, like DF does.

You strike the multi-headed dick with your copper shortsword!
You hit the multi-headed dick in the balls!
The sword is lodged firmly into the wound!
You twist your sword in the wound!
The multi-headed dick is feeling sick!
The multi-headed dick vomits!

Nevermind the MhDs. If you want to create cool monsters, nevermind what they are called or which asci character represents what tile they are on. Make them do cool shit that roguelike monsters have never done before. For instance, grab heavy objects (like a boulder that your character could never actually pick up, or a table, or whatever) and throw them at enemies, swoop down from the heavens and grab on to someone, ambush and strangle them from behind, etc. If you can get monsters to do crazy shit to people like that, it would be a lot more extreme than a bunch of random names.

Kangaroos!

Carnivorous Kangaroos, with opposable thumbs and vocal mimicry.

Night Bees! With infrared sensors like snakes. And they are vampiric!
They swarm and paralyze and drain. Maybe not enough to kill, but horrible shit to run into.
Just run away.
If you manage to find and capture a nest without destroying it you find "Night Bee Honey", which is made from blood. Specially preserved just like honey. (Imagine if blood banks had a way to store blood like that.)

The Night Bee idea is mine, but the Blood Honey is from a defunct UnknownArmies page. It involved ritualistically hanging a guy from meat hook and growing a colony of fly larvae in his ribcage. They would produce "Fly Honey".

fake edit: WOW! I didn't know about this stuff!

Polymorph spells like in Nethack.

Even make a clone technique where you can transform to different sex and collect "sample" then become woman and self fertilize.

With some sort of Animal Growth spell you can make your own army of mini-me.

lots of little things like that

Please do not pick the hackneyed D&D shit.

No drow, beholders, dragons, mind flayers, derro, etc.

No elves, dwarves, gnomes, halflings (unless you make them genetically engineered circus midgets), etc.

Maybe have the flying squirrel things (phanaton)

I remember those from Isle Of Dread. Maybe make them playable.

Various insect monsters, oozes, jellies, plants, etc. maybe Flumph.

Those mushroom guys are great. I always like those. You could give their poison an effect like getting drunk from the fountains in Telengard.

For uber-bosses have just one of a kind things that can exist only once per game: a Single Undead Beholder, a Single Dragon Turtle, a Single Aboleth, and a Single i dunno.

These ideally should not even be enemies- at least not the player's enemies. Maybe they entertain themselves by plotting against each other in various ways. Each one could have different victory conditions selected from a list at the beginning of each world-creation. So you could worship/get quests from them. This would add a semi-random meta element to the game.

I forgot: Vegepygmies!

Some of the old Gamma World creatures might be ok. At least the Obb.

Gotta have Obbs.

They would give you the strangest quests.

Just wanted to make an update here on my progress, which unfortunately hasn't been much. I started a new job a few weeks ago and it's eating up a lot of my time and it's taking me a while to get adjusted.

I've decided to completely redo the engine from scratch. It's working fine right now as it is but I've had to make some major changes and a few of the experimental features I was working with when I started didn't work out so well. In short it will be easier to redo it in the long run than trying to track down everything that needs to be fixed.

Redoing the engine probably won't take nearly as long as it sounds. I know everything that needs to be added and what not to add.

It mostly has to do with the random seeds I was putting on everything(like, every single tile). Apparently generating thousands of random numbers every single frame bogs down the processor after prolonged gameplay. Yeah, I knew this from the beginning but I didn't know how much of an impact it would actually have. I've already figured out a fix for it, which is essentially a more traditional way of generating everything. But as I said it's either redo the engine or gut my entire program to fix it.

But this will give me an opportunity to try adding some other things. Also I think XNA 3.0 is going to be released soon so I may hold off on it until it's released.

In the mean time I've been coming up with some ideas for actual gameplay. Sorry Redeye, but I've decided to go with some traditional creatures for this game. But I don't plan on them being your typical orcs, goblins and elves.

Since the very idea of this game is satirical in nature I decided to run with that. So creatures are going to be reflecting this. Here's a rundown for some of the ideas I've had for creatures:

Goblins: Only about half the goblins you run into will even be hostile. Many of them will ignore you. Some of them will converse with you like any other NPC. Some of them will even try to sell you myst, a highly addictive, powdery drug. If you kill enough goblins you'll earn the title of "Goblin Slayer". This will cause many of the goblins you run into, hostile or otherwise, to run away from you in terror. The title will also be reflected in some of the things they say while running away, like "*shriek* Lemunde the Goblin Slayer has come for me at last!" or "Spare me, Goblin Slayer! I have five kids to feed!"

Ogres: Most, if not all ogres you run into will be hostile and will attack you and most everything else, on sight. They eat everything they kill, even you. If you're a low level and you see an ogre coming after you saying "Come 'ere, I'm gonna eatcha!" get the fuck out of there. Otherwise the next thing you hear him say will be "*nom*...*nom*...*nom*...*nom*..."

Liches: You won't run into these guys too often. They may or may not attack you depending on their mood. It's generally best to avoid them but if you want to try your luck you could try talking to one. If you somehow manage to defeat one you'll find a sort of soul crystal or artifact on their corpse. This object is what binds them to this world and it's what makes them immortal. Just because you defeated it doesn't mean it won't rise again. You can guarantee it's destruction by destroying the soul artifact but liches place magical wards on them to keep them from being destroyed by normal means. If you decide to just hold on to the artifact you may find that it's original owner will come looking for you, wanting it back. If you're lucky the lich might offer to buy or trade it back from you to avoid getting it's ass kicked again.

Dragons: About as common as liches and about as aggressive. You'll usually find them in large caverns guarding a large horde of treasure. All you stealth fiends out there will probably enjoy trying to sneak past these guys to get to the loot. If they catch you in their lair they may not attack you right away. They may offer to spare your life in exchange for doing some menial task for them. If you're really lucky(or unlucky) the dragon may offer to lend you some of it's gold if you sign a contract to pay it back by a certain time with a sizable interest. It's probably better for your health if you don't refuse either of these offers. If you fail to pay back the money or complete the task by a certain time be assured, the dragon WILL hunt you down and WILL kill you.

Smirphs: I've been toying around with this idea but haven't decided whether or not it's too stupid. Smirphs are small, blue, gnomelike creatures that live near mushrooms. They aren't aggressive or dangerous in the least but witches and sorcerers will pay good money for their corpses. Apparently they're the main ingredient in smirph stew.

Well that's about the extent of my ideas so far on creatures. Basically I want there to be more to monsters than just killing them.

I've also been conjuring up this idea for training. The system I'm going to be using will start the character off with all of the general skills that can be enhanced through gaining levels through experience. Experience is gained through a variety of means, only a few of which involve combat. Pretty much any time your character uses a skill in some way he'll gain experience for it. If he attacks something, he'll gain experience. If he uses magic to heal himself, he'll gain experience. If he successfully sneaks past an enemy he'll gain experience. If he climbs a tree(yes, tree climbing is a skill), he'll gain experience.

All of these skills will be given to the player at the beginning of the game. But there are a few super advanced skills that the player can get through a variety of means, most of which involve training with some form of teacher. For instance there may be a secret ninja hideout somewhere out there. If you play your cards right you'll be able to find this hideout and become initiated into their clan. You'll spend a good deal of time there training(as in actual training) and your training will not be complete until you can defeat a certain NPC in battle. Once your training is complete you'll have a variety of new skills, enhanced speed and a new title. After you gain more experience in the world and enhance these skills further you can return to the hideout for more training and increase your rank.

Another example of gaining new skills is to apprentice yourself to a necromancer. Once you've convinced him to make you his apprentice he'll send you out into the world to do some tasks for him and in exchange he'll teach you the skills you need to start raising your own army of the dead. Eventually, after you've surpassed your master, you may discover a means to turn yourself into a lich, thus making you virtually immortal.

Well, that was a little longer than I expected. So many ideas, so little time. I can only imagine how long this would take me if I actually tried adding real artwork and animation to it. Meh, it wouldn't be impossible but maybe I'll save that for a sequel. Right now I just want to finish this so I'll finally be able to say I made a game.
