I wonder what people had trouble with over the combat, pre dodge, because, while it was hard, it definitely was master-able, and everything was about tight timing. I found it great, and PB's best to date, for me. Risen 1's was far from fluid, and that made it very unsatisfying for me. Dodging was never needed, kicking was there for a reason. If you ever dodged, then you sucked at timing the kicking, because it repelled all the animals's attacks when timed right. I guess it's elder scrolls people who want the bar lowered who were upset about the combat expecting some skill involvement.
The first two Gothic's are by far PB's best creations, but I think I enjoyed Risen 2 a lot more than Risen 1 - up to a point. Risen 1 was just rehashes from the first two Gothics, not really its own game and not feeling new. It also had got really boring when I quit playing it, in the monastery. I felt like I was playing a chore simulator, and I had never got a sense of meaningful purpose up till then.
The first few islands, excluding the starting one with the lava and city, were fun, and beautiful to explore. The later islands were not attractive, and the one that's just tunneled out pathways seemed really shoddy and immersion-crapping-on.
The pirates were cliche and children cartoonish, and they didn't give a very piratey vibe.
The a questing was not up to early PB standards, and the dialog consisted only of clicking through all the available options until they were gone, making there not actually be options. There wasn't really a point in having the dialog be clickable, because there weren't choices - and there weren't many different ways to go about things, either.
Overall, the early islands and the combat are what I like about it. I hope PB keep the combat similar in the next game, I don't want to lose any fluidity or challenge.
