[ Review ]

Looks like Hooked Gamers made good use of their holiday break. First up we have a review of Hired Guns: The Jagged Edge.

Not being happy with the game’s progress and quality, Strategy First pulled the plug on the project. Having lost the license did not deter Game Factory from continuing work on the game. Hired Guns: The Jagged Edge was released to the North American territories in October and, having played the game, I can see why Strategy First decided to bail out.

That's almost exactly what I said after I played the demo.

I was torn between scoring the game with a five or a six. Three reasons tipped the scale to the six. The first is that turn-based tactical games such as these are hopelessly rare. The second is that my hopes are dwindling for a true sequel now that Strategy First has become mute about their efforts to revive the Jagged franchise. The last reason is that I know how persistent hardcore fans of the genre can be and that I am sure that some will find something to like in this game.

In between those two excerpts you'll find a solid, if somewhat sarcastic, review here.

Next up we have a glowing preview of Elven Legacy. Elven Legacy is the Fantasy Wars addon turned stand-alone expansion turned full game.

As your units gain experience, they acquire new skills and perks making them more useful and therefore more valuable. As surviving units will accompany you to the next mission, keeping experienced warriors alive becomes a major part of your every day tasks in the game. Most unit types have an upgrade path that is independent of the skills and perks that your units earn during combat. This allows you to continue to use your experienced warriors without having to starts from scratch by buying a new high-level unit. The upgrade path and skills system work so well that having to replace a deceased experienced unit with a fresh recruit really feels like a great loss which is a great incentive to keep your units alive.

You can read the rest of the preview here.

Spotted @ Blues News
