Really Obscure RPGs

Interesting, looks like a far out of the box RPGMaker creation, still, it's 23€ tax included for an obscure title ...

meungcomic1.jpg

It has nothing to do with RPG-Maker. I purchased it from their website because of the rather unique setting for an RPG (and because I'm too lazy to read Dumas' book myself) and it's definitively crafted with much care and love for the story. It's no difficult game however and intended to be accessible for everybody. There was even a butchered version on Bigfish if I remember correctly.

Ok, today I discovered a new and totally obscure game: The Fire of Ardor: Quest for the Soul Stone.

Released 3 days ago, as retro as it gets: using "CPU-based rendering technique, called raycasting. This technique was originally used by the first FPS games in the early ’90s until hardware accelerated rendering was introduced."

https://cpfr.gitlab.io/the-fire-of-ardor/

A one-man project, a dungeon crawler with RPG elements. Free movement, real time combat. Here's the trailer:

Not really a fan of this kind of games, but maybe someone will try it out. After all, it's free and the download only weights 36 MBs.

I did a search on this thread and found nothing, that's why I'm posting. I don't think this game is super obscure, but you definitely don't see it brought up very often.

Trial by Magic

Real ugly graphics for 1995 if you ask me.

I played through this a couple of years ago, it's actually pretty fun. It's basically SSI's The Summoning but good.

The Summoning (developed by Dreamforge/Event Horizon, not SSI) is miles better than this. At least it doesn't require you to manually search every fucking wall for secret doors to procede.

"&" (yes, that's the name of the game). A very interesting and rather obscure dungeon crawler with a unique graphical style and a catchy soundtrack. Powered by Megazeux. There are actually quite some interesting games on this obscure engine. Another exceptionally interesting - and similarly obscure - RPG-choice is "Legend of Rhovanion". The games can be played online or offline with the Megazeux-application.

This game was later remade in 1998 as ANCIENT EVIL
by the same developer: Silver Lightning Software

Pretty much the exact same gameplay with slightly upgraded graphics.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
So I just stumbled upon a bunch of truly prosperian works.

Behold the action RPGs made by phr00t Software:

5089: The Action RPG

There's various other action RPGs with similar titles the same dev made prior to that (5089 is the latest):

I bought it like a decade ago and remember it turning out a bit too short and too simple for my taste.

"Claiming Xodius", a rather unknown and unique action rpg with much exploration, original graphical style and some nice ideas like taming animals. If I remember correctly it was sold on Desura, now for free on itch.io.

edit: "Terminal Angel Disease". I don't know anything to say about this utterly bizarre freeware RPG. Only played it for some minutes and really don't know what to think about it... judge for yourself, I have no words for it.

So it's more than a decade old and still costs 24 euros?

Some people just hate selling their stuff.

Excelsior games are still being sold for $15 each. The first one was originally released in 1993, the second, in 2000.
To be fair, though, Ex1 playable unregistered (but lacks a manual). But Ex2 has a low level cap that is only removed after registration.

I'm trying to find it and I know I have it buried somewhere in one of my harddrives because I played the game probably 2 or 3 years ago, but there is a workaround for the Ex2 shareware limits.

Edit: -snip-

Oh yes, I remember cracking it too. My point is, the devs intended it to be unplayable without registration, and registering at this price after this many years is a little bit ridiculous.

In "Sapiens" you play a glorious neanderthal trying to survive 100 000 years before our time. This strange piece of software haunted me for many years. I found its website years ago and was interested in the concept but forgot the name and wasn't able to hunt it down. Thus this strange game became another Holy Grail for me. Now some months ago while browsing nonchalantly on juegos liberados I finally found it again. It's freeware now and runs on modern systems. The game is a visual mix of 2D-sidescrolling view and a 3D-mode. You have to collect stuff and talk to other denizens of the prehistoric planes. You have to eat and drink regularly. And you have to fight a lot. I haven't played much of it, mostly because these darn cavemen always get aggro as soon as I talk to them and murder me right at the beginning. I'm not even sure if it counts as a "real" RPG or as a wild adventure/RPG/beat em'up-mix. Rather strange game. Oh and it has uncovered boobs. Lots of them.

http://www.myriad-online.com/en/products/sapiens.htm

There is a single gameplay video from the Windows version on yt but it seems to be of an earlier version (the new version can be played fullscreen). There is also a CPC- and a Atari ST-version but only in French as far as I know.

CPC and Atari ST:

Good find, but the page itself is even better. I'm now exploring its rich collection of obscurities. Propably wlll post some of my findings here soon!

Indeed, there are many interesting titles on juegos liberados. Stuff I never heard of. Or do you mean the Myriad Online-website?

"Srututu - Forgotten Foe" is a charming little boardgame-RPG-mix. I find it to be quite entertaining and like the somewhat naive, but unique graphics.

Long description from indiedb:
Board game sounds like a boring static game where the die results are more important than player skills. But .. Are you sure? The board may be a reflection of the vibrant world where the player can perform multiple actions and choices. Everything depends on the character classes, skills, and items that you select. You can fight in the arena to earn some money and experience or you can search for the job in the mill. Create your own weapons and sell themin the city. Work in the mine to extract some gems and gold. Fight against hundreds of enemies and collect herbs to heal yourself. Bail your friend out of prison. Use a broom to clean up the abandoned house and rest there. Steal money and prey to Gods for forgivness. Just choose nine skills to create your character. Choose them wisely, because a lot of challenges awaits you. This is a short description of the game Srututu-Forgotten Foe.

Game features:

  • each game is different
  • interaction with the world highly dependent on the character skills and equipment
  • finish quests and unlock new items, skills and actions
  • game difficulty increases with every lap
Three game modes:
  • Normal Game - character starts every mission at 1lvl, with basic inventory, and with no skills. In this mode character gaining experience quickly and can find very good items (even better with the progress in the game)
  • Character Save- character starts every mission at 1lvl, equipment and skills are saved from the previous mission. It's hard to find a good equipment. Each skill costs extra experience.
  • Free Game - everything is unlocked (skills, items, characters, actions). There is no missions. Equipment and skills are saved. You can test the skills and plan your character
Why Board Game??

This game is very complex so it is not a typical board game that could be played without a computer. It is based on the fundamental principles of board games but it is 100% computer game.
Today, many of the games features randomly generated levels. Here the board is static but the player moves according to the dice results. It may seem that a lot depends on luck and the player skills are not important. That's not true. Everything depends on your choices. And the desired dice result gives a lot of happiness! ;D

I tried Trader's Road. Oh, my ears. Eyes weren't in best shape either. I guess Spells of Gold will remain the best trading rpg for some more time :)

But I absolutely have to play You Testament. The concept of this game sound outrageously fun.
