Yeah, whenever I get a new cool piece of equipment, someone gets killed driving it. Same thing happened when Vaarne v.1 got the brand new PzIVF2.
But, that was one tough fight in difficult terrain, so casualties were inevitable. Although, I was genuinely surprised at the ease that Panther got popped. It DID have 14 armor.

I'll *try* to update and finish this mission in a few hours. Unfortunately, it's two weeks till christmas and people are going apeshit, which means I'm swamped with work again.

Good thing is we ony have a few missions left, so this LP should be finished before 2012 (-:

Awright. A small update is headed your way.

In the last episode, we were gettign ready to assault the southernmost objective.

Guderian.jpg

Multiple enemy AAs protected by artillery but no real armor. Easy.

First, bombardment time. Psychic snuff the AAs from afar. Merk Moves closer... but first
LP003Siege1.jpg

Serrated.jpg

Well hello there purdy thang.
LP003Siege2.jpg

The Yak 7 is killed. Serrated didn't move this turn, so the 88 fire is very effective.

Anyways...
Merk.jpg

I'm in poistion, ready to fire.
LP003Siege3.jpg

Damage isn't stellar, but the AAs are all supressed.

Luftwaffe can now join the fun. Unfortunately, eklektyk is out for refit.
JoKA.jpg

I assume you wan't that Katyusha gone?
LP003Siege4.jpg

JoKA.jpg

Done and done.
LP003Siege5.jpg

Hellraiser.jpg

All right, let me just mop up a bit.

Psychic.jpg

Would be cool if somebody took out that stray arty to the north, by the way.

Guderian.jpg

Dispatching Fallshirmjager. Assist the siege, Azira.
LP003Siege6.jpg

Azira.jpg

We're on them. Cannot do much damage. Requesting assistance.

Yep. Artillery is pretty good vs. infantry, and that pos is overstrengthened, meaning it's a bitch to kill.

LP003Siege7.jpg

NewBee assists, and the artillery is almost good to go.

Hellraiser.jpg

We could take that town right here and now, no?
Psychic.jpg

Possible, but it's more prudent to give them a good shelling first.
Vaarne-1.jpg

All right, firing at infantry.
LP003Siege8.jpg

Vaarne-1.jpg

They should feel that one.
Psychic.jpg

They'll just reinforce before our next attack, you know that.
Vaarne-1.jpg

Indeed. But they'll stay put. That counts for something.

Meanwhile up north, a mobile AT gun was threatening our flank.
cBreaker gives it a few shots.
LP003Siege9.jpg

And it succumbs to Carius with ease.
LP003Siege11.jpg

LP003Siege10.jpg

In the meantime, Cassidy shells the nearby bunkers.

Cassidy.jpg

with some luck, this'll give us a headstart when we assault the city.

Sitrep time.
LP004Sitrep5.jpg

The sieges are progressing slowly. Southern objective is almost ready to go, the central one will need a bit more work
It appears we smashed most of the heavy armor, so we should be able to proceed unhindered.

Enemy turn. Not much happens, lone Guardsmen attempt to take advantage of Cassidy being low on ammo,
but are halted in their tracks by our artillery. They withdraw in shame.
LP004Fight1.jpg

Enemy AT near the southern objective takes a few shots at Vaarne, bu the effect is small.

8 turns remain for major victory.
Time to tackle the artillery. Unfortunately, Azira's movement order was damaged during the fighting, so he has to
disengage.

Azira.jpg

We'll be next to useless like this. We need to stay mobile to assist the Blitzkrieg.
Azira.jpg

I'll withdraw to the nearest airfield to maintain mobility.

NewBee.jpg

Godspeed. I can handle the artillery.
LP004Fight2.jpg

NewBee.jpg

Easy as pie.

The empty airfield is quickly taken by the SS.
Nex-1.jpg

In position to assault the city, Kommand. Give me a firing solution on that target.

Merk.jpg

That AT has to go first.
LP004Fight3.jpg

Merk.jpg

Nothing shall stand in our way.

Psychic.jpg

Preparing firing solution.
LP004Fight4.jpg

Psychic.jpg

That city is nothing but rubble right now.

And it is quickly taken. No treat this time.
LP004Fight5.jpg

Garf-1.jpg

This objective is secure. We need to press on.
Psychic.jpg

You are not Garf.
Garf-1.jpg

Distant cousin. Some say we look alike.
Garf-1.jpg

Anyways, I'll spearhead the attack. Let's take some secondaries.

Guderian.jpg

Ia pprove of this. However, securing main objectives is of primary concern.
Guderian.jpg

We shall asssemble a small strike team, but the Northern Kampfgruppe needs reinforcing.

Speaking of which. This is a bit tricky up here. We don't have the reach to handle the enemy arty AND AAs at the same time.

Anus.jpg

Shitfuck. I can't reach anything with this pitiful range. cBreaker, it's on you.
cbreaker.jpg

Relocating. I'll attempt to get to the AA, we can call in the Stukas then.
LP004Fight6.jpg

cbreaker.jpg

That's about right.
Derper.jpg

I'm rolling in.
Derper.jpg

Hmm. That infantry looks juicy.
Guderian.jpg

Wait, do not engage. There's a katyusha skulking about somewhere nearby...

Carius.jpg

We'll flank them through the river. Gondolin assist me.
Carius.jpg

Shitfuck. I think we've found our katyusha.
Gondolin.jpg

I see that little circumsized prick.
cbreaker.jpg

It's in range. I'll take it out for you.
LP004Fight7.jpg

And gondolin takes out the AA.
LP004Fight8.jpg

Gondolin.jpg

Sky is clear. Luftwaffe, assist.

JoKA.jpg

I'm taking that artillery.
LP004Fight9.jpg

JoKA.jpg

Aaand the katyusha. Out of bombs, sorry gents, have to resupply before we have more fun.
LP004Fight10.jpg

Where's eklektyk? Unfortunately, refitting aricraft is a bitch. One turn to move to the airstrip, second turn to refit.
Which means, it's best to keep the planes aout of harm's way, as heavy AA fire puts it out of commission for two turns minimum.

Back to the siege, Anus unloads on the city defenders and the nearby bunker.
LP004Fight11.jpg

Cassidy sweeps the way for the final assault.
LP004Fight12.jpg

And spectre moves in to prevent the infantry from refitting.

Enemy turn.

spectre.jpg

I see multiple air contacts incoming.
spectre.jpg

Brace yourselves, I don't know if I can get them all...

First Derperi s hassled by an IL (not pictured).
Then two bombers bother Gondolin and Carius.
LP005Enemy2.jpg

LP005Enemy3.jpg

The AA didn't get them all. Both sustain medium damage.

Guderian.jpg

Kampfgruppe, damage report!
Carius.jpg

Fuhrer protects. We're still standing.
Carius.jpg

But, we could use a breather if we are to press on.
LP005Enemy4.jpg

So, Gondolin and Carius refit. The rest of the team proceed assault the enemy positions at Kursk.

Luftwaffe moves in to strike.
eklektyk.jpg

I'm a bit late, but good thing you saved something for me down here.
LP005Enemy5.jpg

LP005Enemy6.jpg

Derper maneuvers among the bunkers and prepares to mop up the defenders.

Derper.jpg

We can easily take that objective, but someone's got to do something about those pesky bunkers.
JoKA.jpg

Still have one present left to give. Might as gol to the bunkers.
LP005Enemy7.jpg

The Bunker Killer attack is very effective. The bunker is barely standing.

JoKA.jpg

You'll take it from here, I guess. Have to reload.

Spectre and Derper quickly seize the city. Spectre get's a commendation for capturing Kursk.
I'll show you a screenie in a bit.

spectre.jpg

Nepotism? Don't see no nepotism here.
spectre.jpg

Anyhoo. We mustn't dally. I'll kill that bunker, the rest of you clean up the advance to the East.
LP005Enemy8.jpg

Psychic is sent north to reinforce.
LP005Enemy9.jpg

Guderian.jpg

We need more firepower for the final objective. The Brummbar should suffice for the secondary objectives.

Speaking of those...
NewBee.jpg

Recon here. I have intel on the secondary objective.
LP005Enemy1.jpg

Almost no resistance. Moving right along.

Guderian.jpg

The enemy is operating from the Eastern aristrip. Give me intel on that.

NewBee.jpg

See what I can do.
NewBee.jpg

The terrain is difficult.
NewBee.jpg

Aaand I found our planes.
Katz.jpg

They are a vital threat to our attack. I'll take them down.
LP005Enemy10.jpg

Katz.jpg

Odds are crappy.
LP005Enemy11.jpg

Fat and juicy target, unfortunately the Amerikwan plane is well protected from aircraft.
Katz.jpg

I'm striking out of the sun.
Katz.jpg

Mutterfikker. I need more dakka.

Unfortunately, Katz was only able to weaken the A20.

Enemy turn. No aircraft activity detected. They all returned to resupply and refit.
Our southern group is bothered by a recon tank.
LP005Enemy13.jpg

Serrated.jpg

You filthy circumsized Judeprick!

Not much happens apart from this. The enemy recon tanks can be nasty, not only it has decent stats, it's also ovestrengthened.
LP005Enemy12.jpg

We have reinforcements. It is also raining, which is a mixed blessing.

Our stukas are both all-weather, meaning we can put some hurt to the enemy still.

Now, let's see what the cat brought in...
LP005Enemy14.jpg

A SiG, a PzIv and some infantry. We can make use of that.

Gondolin.jpg

Scouting for enemy positions near Kursk.
Gondolin.jpg

Oh shit.
LP005Move1.jpg

Gondolin.jpg

Heavy tanks and light recon tank. We need to do something about it.
Gondolin.jpg

There's also lone infantry on the road.

Guderian.jpg

The auxilliary troops will tackle them. Slow their advance.
Guderian.jpg

We need just a bit more time to secure defensive positions near Kursk.
Guderian.jpg

Verdammte, that Infantry worries me the most, they may have artillery or AT support nearby.

Cassidy assisted by infantry takes a few shots at the bunkers.
LP005Move2.jpg

Cassidy.jpg

Out of ammo. Your turn.

But Carius is better at this game. The bunker is killed and the path lies open.

Eklektyk and JoKa are sent to harrass the enemy armor.
LP005Move3.jpg

LP005Move4.jpg

eklektyk.jpg

Not much more we can do in that blasted rain.

The auxilliaries move in, and deliver a bit of hurt.
LP005Move5.jpg

That'll buy us some time.

Katz.jpg

Infuriating. Can't do shit in that kind of weather.
LP005Move6.jpg

Indeed. Enemy Bombers are safe for now. Mixed blessing, as we needn't worry about airstrikes too.

Hellraiser.jpg

We are ready to seize the objective.
Hellraiser.jpg

I'll dispose of that T70 first though.
LP005Move7.jpg

Hellraiser.jpg

Prudent.

Not much to be said, the lone infantry is quickly dispatched and the objective is taken.
LP005Move8.jpg

Vaarne-1.jpg

Proud to serve.

By the way, first promotion on the AA looks like this:
LP005Move9.jpg

Handy. Take 3 base range of the 88, add +1 for "Positioning" VO and we have an impressive 5 range defensive umbrella.
In case you were wondering, the third veteran order is quick-deployment - which means the AA will be deployed automatically after moving. Same as the artillery and just as marginally useful.

Next turn.

eklektyk.jpg

The rain has ended.
eklektyk.jpg

You know what this means, ja?
LP005End1.jpg

It's Stuka reap time.
LP005End3.jpg

The auxiliaries help to mop up. These tanks aren't going anywhere.

Since the road is clear, we position our artillery in a marching column. Time to seize the final objective.
LP005End2.jpg

And in the meantime, Carius assisted by the arty disposes of an AT that was threatening our flank.

Carius.jpg

One last thing to deal with...
LP005End4.jpg

Carius.jpg

And we're good to go.

Since you're probably all confused right now, let's look at the map.
LP005Sitrep6.jpg

After mopping around Kurks, we're very close to the final objective.
I scouted around a bit, the path to the secondary objective to the east looks clear, but we don't have the manpower to take it, should things go not according to plan.
The artillery column is assembled to push towards the objective, that much firepower ensures we can take it on time.

We'll use the auxiliary troops to guard Kursk, just in case someone comes a-knocking.

Now, down south we see Azira's paratroopers defending the objective. The main force down south is slowly approaching the last secodary target in the area. Preliminary scouting has been done.

NewBee.jpg

Reporting on enemy positions. I see a bomber, 15 cm artiellery and a Su76 AT.
NewBee.jpg

Infantry is guarding the main objective. No sign of AA support.

LP005End5.jpg

LP005End6.jpg

Guderian.jpg

That looks good.

Enemy turn starts promising. A T34 walks into our artillery.
Cassidy.jpg

I'll kill you dead, Fokka!
LP005End7.jpg

spectre.jpg

Enemy bombers incoming. I got them.
LP005End8.jpg

Cassidy.jpg

What's that sound?
Cassidy.jpg

Holy mutter, take cover, goddamit!
spectre.jpg

Shit, this is a full scale counterassault!
katyusha.jpg

katyusha.jpg

LP005End9.jpg

Cassidy.jpg

Nooo!
Guderian.jpg

Nashorn, respond!
Guderian.jpg

Over?

RIP MCA Cassidy. You will be forever emembered.
LP005End10.jpg

Two turns remaining.

We move down south for a bit.
Serrated begins by taking down the A20.
LP005End11.jpg

And we swoop in.
Merk has to get close to kill the artillery.
LP006Fin1.jpg

And after that, we're pretty much in the clear.
LP006Fin2.jpg

Garf-1.jpg

We drive them back. Victory is almost ours!

Situation is stable here. Which means we can use the Luftwaffe elsewhere.

The Northern Kampfruppe thirsts for blood. The T34 and T35 are quickly dispatched.
LP006Fin3.jpg

LP006Fin4.jpg

Leaving only twisted scrap metal behind, they move towards the objective.
Carius.jpg

We go no futher!
Carius.jpg

Kommand, requesting luftwaffe assistance.

Guderian.jpg

Granted. Kampfgruppe, stay together. I want no more surprises.

LP006Fin5.jpg

German and Russian airplanes swarm the sky as our artillery lumbers towards the objective.

Not much happens in enemy turn.
A lone armored car reinforces the defenders.... bad choice of words, it merely get in the way.
LP006Fin6.jpg

LP006Fin7.jpg

And down south the enemy is totally at our mercy.

Newbee Kills the infantry,
LP006Fin8.jpg

And Stsstruppen seize the town.
LP006Fin9.jpg

Nex-1.jpg

I cry tears of joy at our well deserved victory..

Guderian.jpg

Men, time for the final push.
Guderian.jpg

No hassle, just take the objective promptly and quickly.

It is also the last turn for major victory.

It all begins with a hail of artillery fire.
cbreaker.jpg

Tell me, Hund, does it feel gut?!
LP006Fin10.jpg

Heinz kills one bomber. Probably art for art's sake at this point.
LP006Fin11.jpg

Carius wasily pushes the armored car out of the way.
LP006Fin12.jpg

And luftwaffe kills some of the stragglers. Again, art for art's sake.
LP006Fin13.jpg

Supported by three artillery pieces, Carius confidently takes the town.
LP006Fin14.jpg

The press in Vaterland shall hear of our glorious victory at Kursk!
LP006Fin15.jpg

And it's done.
LP006Fin16.jpg

47 kills, ~4000 potato liberated. Good score.

Debrief
Again, a costly victory. We lost two good oficers and almost lost von Ulm. Thankfully he'll be with us for the next mission, otherwise it would get hairy without air superiority.

Speaking of which, as you could see, we started out good, then we lost air superiority near the end f the scenario. This cost us a bit of time and the life of Cassidy. Bad combination - airstrike + katyusha + overstrengthened T35. Even fully entrenched, Nashorn doesn't have the armor to take that kind of punishment.

We also lost our Panther, almost at the very beginning. :x
I raged at this, but oh well. Fuhrer giveth, fuhrer taketh.

But, the fighting was tough, no denying that. We took out three big groups of heavy armor.
Kursk was one hell of a nut to crack, especially since anus' artillery had only 3 range - we couldn't
reach some of the targets.

I admit, had I split my forces more optimally I may have captured all the secondary objectives. Unfortunately, I got put off by the casualties and I was paranoid about the enemy recon cars, so I put Azira and HooDoo in reserve.

So, Waffenbruder, let's contemplate our fallen Kameraden and get ready for the next battle.

Man, we lost some good guys. Sad story, bros. :( Well, it seems like having advance equipment is a death sentence. I'm surprised Carius isn't dead yet.

Yep. I almost didn't notice that at first (beacause yeah 8 green dots vs 10 green dots), but them 2 points seem to really make a difference.

It goes like this, as the war drags on, the equipment that once was rare prototypes becomes more common, going from 8 strength to full 10, and the common equipment becomes much more plentifu and dirt cheap, meaning you can field them in greater numbersl (like the obsolete tanks and artillery with strength 12 to 15)
Nice touch, imo.

Also, I see that the game likes to simulate the Ruskie strength in numbers philosophy with this very parameter. Conscripts and T35 become much more deadly this way.
Also, killing them is a chore, unless suppressed and forced to surrender... but you've already seen this.

That's quite the attrition rate :(

Respect to the fallen :salute:

In some aspects it seems like a modern battle, with the way air power raped our troops when given the chance. Did the Nashorn perform well with range 2 shelling of bunkers ? I always used 88's for that role in previous editions of Panzer General to great effect, so what's essentially a 88 PaK43 mounted on a PzIII/IV chassis should have been quite effective as well in such a role.

I guess the majestic StuG would have survived the aircraft and artillery rape, because it provides such a small target, whereas the "tank-sniping" Nashorn (thanks to special optics it scored kills up to 5 kilometers away) seems of limited use here.

Let me shell some more commies into pulp for my fallen comrades ...

No need to be modest here. On the East Front the Stuka worked great up until the end of the war. The West Front however, was something totally different.

Unfortunately, I have good news and bad news.

The bad news is, unfortunataly, eklektyk was right and my screenshots did not survive the time when codex went under the weather a few months back. Same goes for the saves, but they wouldn't help us much anyway, cause I've pretty much finished the campaign.
I thought we were gone for good and deleted fucking everything(tm) in rage.

The good news is I've finally figured out how to install the configuration package, it's a bit clunky but seems to work.
It also means western front campaigns are now available, as well as a german 20-something scenario mega-campaign, but I don't think I have the stamina for it.

What can I say, i feel guilty about abandoning this LP like that.
The worst bit is starting over, but fuck that. If you guys are still interested, no problems, but there's some stuff to get out of the way first.

a) I need to catch up with work. With some luck we can begin next week. With no luck at all, beginning of April.
b) Since we're starting from the beginning, new recruits will be needed. I can use some of the old crew, but I think it's a nice opportunity for a fresh start.
c) Finally, I need to decide which campaign to play. Ideally something shorter this time. I'm not too keen on playing non-ubermensh, but I can be persuaded to do a quick and dirty campaign as russian, amerikwan or brit
