Also, Mieville, fantasy-fiction-bashing comrades. Mieville.

This. Next to Mieville most of the writers cited are just... nothing against, say, Pratchett exactly but he doesn't write anything half as a challenging as Mieville. Gaiman does have some things in common with China Mieville, but he's like a more watered-down commercial-friendly version who tells the same story over and over.

While we're at it: KJ Bishop, Jeff VanderMeer, Catherynne M. Valente.

I can't believe I'm stooping this low, but...

Does anyone have a Witcher 1 save file where they sided with the Order? I don't care about any other choice made in the first game. I just need one where you helped the order over the squirrels.

Well you'll get another 20 hours at least with the other thread. It would the equivalent of playing a one story line RPG for 60 hours. Better to have two focused half length stories than one long story full of filler. Open world explorefag games benefit most from being long, but story focused semi linear ones? Shit, DA:O would have been better had they just ripped out half of the shit in it, tightened the script, made the remaining encounters meaningful etc.

China Mieville, you say? I haven't read any of his works  Could you recommend his best novels?

The Scar is his best, easily, followed by Perdido Street Station. I've just gotten started on his latest novel Embassytown and will report back in some time whether it's any good, but in the meantime his short story collection Looking for Jake and Other Stories is quite neat in its own right.

Yes. TW2 is feeling a little shorter to me than expected, but on the other hand I greatly appreciate the focus compared to the filler-laden shitfest that was DA:O. Game hours isn't everything. Quality over quantity, always.

I too would like more(maybe if it had a third neutral path) just like I wished for more from Fallout, TW1(which had it's share of filler as well, thankfully just the one real area), Gothic. OTOH I think that it's better to want more at the completion of a game than do the mental equivalent of looking at your watch while playing, wondering how much further until the final boss. With DA:O I could see it as a generic, pleasant enough experience in places, something neither great but not awful, but I just got so worn down by the never ending filler encounters that I just gave up in disgust. Not all games are this bad with the filler, but even with good games like Fallout 2 I was almost reaching exhaustion by the end.

On another note, good luck with your fantasy search. So far I've only found two fantasy series worth a damn - The Witcher and A Song of Ice and Fire (the latter being the most well-written).

Everything else in the genre is braindead entertainment compared. Not that that's a bad thing, mind you. I like Death's Gate quite a bit, for example.

Try to read Joe Abercrombies: First Law series it is pretty good.

Lol, Joe Abercrombie. Dude tries too hard; Best Served Cold is more palatable than First Law trilogy, but that's mostly because it is hysterical--entirely unintentionally.

Eh, act 1 started very promisingly, but after exploring the forest (which isn't really all that big) I've been running after npcs from one cutscene to another for the past few hours. I thought the game was supposed to "open up" now. Tell me this does actually improve in act 2.

usually with a good game you get "i wanna more" but actually thinking of replaying you end up "meh"
:bro:
now waiting for a patch and new nvidia drivers and through the breach once more

The game is really good at the beggining and ending of each act, all of a sudden you have some good C&C thrown at your face, and things start to get in motion.

Other than that it is just running around doing side quests and "waiting for events to unfold". If you're getting bored stop doing random billboard missions and work on the main quest. ;)

Though the billboard missions are light years ahead of TW1 ones. I'm talking about the ones that are "witcher's work". You still pretty much hunt monsters but this time it's more about eliminating their threat, not randomly killing a bunch of poor fucks. Blow up nests, kill queens + cocoons, dispel runes etc.

Maybe you misunderstood. I've already completed what I could in terms of side quests, I wish there were more. It's the scripted main story that's getting on my nerves (however well directed and dramatic it is). Follow mage to boss, kill boss. Follow Triss to place, kill dudes, watch cutscene. Follow Zoltan to creature, kill creature, watch cutscene. Follow elves to dude, fightl dude, watch cutscene. Follow Jaskier, watch cutscene. Follow trail, watch cutscene. One scripted event after another. It's tedious. Where is all the Witcher work? Two contracts? Come on.

It's one city/town/place, so you won't get many contracts, but there are sidequests that you can miss. If you're still in Act I, check Roche place, it's next to the tavern. There's a quest waiting there.

Maybe they will make TW3 more openworld. Visiting Aedirn, Kaedwen, Temeria, Redania and the Imperium. Doing quests and shit.
Main city, 3 towns, 2-5 explore places for each country (maybe one city for Imperium) and of course special places. That's a lot of work, but they already have the engine, just make it happen.

Do I need to have played the first game to get any enjoyment out of this? The combat in the first game was a bit too shit for me to trudge through it, as the RPG aspects and the story didn't make up for the combat, imo. TWitcher 2 actually looks fun to play, though, as opposed to just having a good story/C&C.

No.

I actually didn't even remember the events of the first game too well, to the point of thinking Iorveth was the same elf leader from the first game until I had a conversation with him about the other dude.

BROS LET US VCUT THE BULLSHIT AND GET DOWN TO WHAT EVERYONE WANTS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME. WE NEED TO MAKE A COMPENDIUM OF ALL THE SEX YOU CAN DO AS WELL AS HOW TO DO IT.

SO FAR I HAVE ONLY SEEN TRISH NAKED, BUT SHE IS A SKANK THAT USES TOO MUCH SPRAY ON TAN AND THAT ONE IS A GIVEN.

NOW YOU WILL LIST ALL SEX SCENES AND HOW TO GET THEM. NO SPOILER TAGS, WE NEED AS MUCH HARDNESS AS POSSIBLE.

ALSO ARE THERE ANY LIQUIDS IN THIS GAME THAT ARE SEEN? ANY SEXUAL BYPRODUCTS?

GO.

Would be great. An expansion and some DLC's in the meantime for TW2 won't hurt either. CDPR have kind of built up the world from the first to the second game, filled it with ever increasing intrigue, that it just begs a more open structure for a third game to really bring home the chaos of the Northern Kingdoms at the moment. Geralt would again be the 'hero' but of course his heroism would be as much to do with cold calculations(if that's how you want to play it) as any idealism. After all, a world in flames is not a world that would really give a priority to hiring witchers to get rid of monsters, and so it would be in Geralt's interest to try and fix this or that in between going from town to town looking for Witcher work. An open world would also allow CDPR to bring out that folky Slavic feel of the first game; lonely villages at the ends of the earth kind of thing. Finish the Geralt arc(though I hope to see White Wolf in the future as a NPC or in another ARPG series eventually), and then make TW4 an iso party game in the same world with TB combat. ;)

Like you said, they have the engine now, so it's slam dunk time with extra stuff for TW2(maybe they could test certain ideas and mechanics, beasts etc. in DLC) and just content making for TW3.

Don't be misguided by the fact that every woman in this game looks like a pornstar, the only important NPC you get to fuck is Triss. You actually see Phillipa in some lesbian domination scene but you just stand there and watch for a bit.

Something really odd happened between the two games, maybe we'll have a DLC explaining how Geralt lost his insatiable lust?
