Japan is about to experience an open-ended RPG, the likes they’ve never seen before. The Elder Scrolls is a very different breed of RPG from Japanese RPGs, and we can’t wait to see how it does. Hopefully our initial Famitsu scores are a pretty good indicator that we’ll do well.

Let's see what Famitsu scores are... Oh, they are 10/9/10/9! Total score is 38 out of 40 or 95%. It's nice to see that the Japanese gamers have their own absolutely objective pre-release review, just like the European and American ones.

Does anybody know what the average Jap thinks of Western RPGs? I wonder, is there a Jap RPGCodex?

Not all Japs are retarded hentai freaks, just like not all Westerners play Halo and WoW.

By the way Lestat, did you write the Bloodlines walkthrough on GameFAQ?

It's spreading like AIDS. Japan was safe for now but everything ends eventually. Say 'hi' to next-gen CRPGZ0R!

I am... The FURY!! </mgs3>

That aside: will Oblivion be a strike as terrible to Japan as the bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki were?

Great. So the first western RPG to come to Japan in a big way would the dumbest game of the century, the antichrist of the industry?

Yeah, I lived there for a few years, western RPGs are pretty nichey.

Primarily because they aren't fully localized. Some games are straight imports, some are half-assed localized (japanese print on box, discs and manual at best). The only fully localized versions of western RPGs would be for blockbuster action games like Diablo2 which are not text- intensive.

The other thing is, they are pretty protectionist economincally speaking, and I'm pretty sure that foreign firms have to enter in a kind of partnership to distribute their goods there. I bought my copy of PS:T there and it has Sega printed all over the discs, box, and a Sega startup screen.

You have to look hard, but you can find western RPGs there. In largers stores there are usually a shelf or two for foreign PC games ( I bought my copies of PS:T, BG2, IWD).

Of course the very same store will have aisles and aisles of anime porn games.

The Record of Lodoss War anime series which, I'm pretty sure, inspired the long thin-eared elf look copied by the night elves in WoW is heavily influenced by D&D. The first episode is almost like a D&D tabletop session turned into an anime (along with all the cliches) and the producer/director interview thing they had at the end showed him holding up Wizardry boxes (presumably showing off his influences).

Anyways, I think western RPGs are a niche thing there like it is here.

There was a single player Diablo clone for Record Of Lodoss for the Dreamcast released in 2001.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but don't Japanese hate Western RPGs, both good and bad? Don't they pretty much hate most western games in general? Didn't the Xbox bomb in Japan?

What the hell is Bethesda thinking?

i'm not sure. maybe it's a win-win situation for Codex.
If the japanese likes it, we can label them as beth fanboys as well.

If Beth fails to market Oblivion we can laugh at Todd Howard. :)

Maek moar money?

Some of the hype surely swapped over there via the intertubes, and I doubt that the japanese are any more imune to that kind of crap than us westerners. What does Beth have to lose? Translating the thing is a pretty minor effort if you compare it to the possible gains of opening up the extremely important japanese market for beth'soft products.

You can say they produce shit games, rightfully so, but they do know how to make money.

lol i doubt we'll hear it but I just giggle when I visualize the japanese dub actors saying generic one liners to each other and all the high elves use those high pitched voices.

Guys, let's just toss in some cash and send them Gothic 3 instead.

I thought you were broke after having to pay reparations to your principal for manhandling his cat?
