Update 7: Daidouji Residence Basement
Before we verify Rin's lead, let's fulfill the Agathion's request and capture some bugs. It mentioned sweets were important.
> A female clerk inside is discreetly stuffing herself with the shop's product.
For some unfathomable reason, you can't just walk in and buy sweets. You can steal some by sending a demon solo, though.
> Azumi is fascinated by the syrup. Take some?
[Yes]
> Azumi obtained Syrup.
We can catch one bug with this Syrup.
> It's packed with girls eating sweets.
Stealing some ice cream will allow us to get another one.
> Azumi look covetously at the ice cream all the girls are eating. What should Azumi do?
[Steal it]
> Azumi helped itself to the rest of the ice cream.
Female customer: I don't believe this! Now it's all disappeared! What gives? This isn't supposed to happen!
> Azumi obtained Ice Cream.
I feel slightly guilty about this.
While we run around the district, our Agathion gains a second level up and learns Elec Boost. A 50% boost to all electricity-based attacks.
Now, we were told that bugs are likely to be found near trees in isolated areas. The shrine fits perfectly.
> The tree is partially covered with Ice Cream.
All we have to do now is wait for a full moon.
> A beetle is licking up the melted Ice Cream. Raidou obtained the Beetle.
Let's see what we can attract with Syrup.
> It's a gigantic tree. Bugs might be attracted to sweet material on the tree...
[Spread the Syrup]
> The tree is partially covered with Syrup. ...! A Stag Beetle is sucking on the syrup. Raidou obtained the Stag Beetle.
Good catch. We can trade the bugs now.
Agathion: Whoa! A Stag Beetle! Hey, lemme have it! Please!
Sure.
Agathion: Sweet! I'll trade you this for it.
> Raidou obtained Roman Coin x1.
Agathion: Yes! I got a Stag Beetle!
> Agathion put the Stag Beetle in his jug.
Agathion: Gah! Ow ow ow!
Poor thing.
Agathion: Jeepers! It's a Beetle! Hey, will you trade me for it!?
Sure.
Agathion: Rock! I'll trade you this for it.
> Raidou obtained Javanese Figure x1.
Agathion: Sweet! I got a Beetle!
> Agathion put the Beetle in his jug.
While we got significantly more valuable antiques. Let's sell them at Konnou-Ya.
The antiques and sake sell for 27500 yen in total. That's great money for the early game. Let's put it to a good use and improve our demon lineup with fusion.
First, we mend the main flaw of our party: the complete lack of force-based attacks. For this, we fuse a Poltergeist, the weakest demon of the Wind order. Wind demons can Scout the area, telling you what enemies you can encounter in it. Ukobach and Obariyon are used as fusion components.
By the way, it appears I lied a little when describing skill inheritance mechanics. Unless you use a Pagan demon or change the components, the demon you try to fuse will always inherit the same skills. Advancing the moon phase doesn't appear to change anything, although I was right when I said that nothing is inherited on a new moon. I have no idea why I thought it worked the way described in the other update. Maybe I confused things with the second game?
Anyway, let's fuse.
Ukobach: I already know you're a kick-ass summoner. I'll go along with whatever you say, man!
Obariyon: Okay. I didn't have any plans today anyway.
Demons say some parting words when you use them in fusion in this game. Nice touch.
Victor raises the cages to the very top of the basement chamber. That's a pretty ceiling for a basement, now that I think about it.
The power of SCIENCE joins the cages together.
Poltergeist: You can be my servant!
We also replace our Ukobach, outdated in every way, with a Pyro Jack. This one is fused from the Alp and Agathion.
Finally, we pay Victor to resummon the Alp, Obariyon and Agathion.
With the preparations complete, we return to the mansion.
I'm sorry, but we simply do not have anyone who can show you around. My apologies, Sir.
...I guess the servants are all tied up at the moment. That's good news for us; now we can snoop around on our own.
It appears the servants are busy entertaining a different guest. Let's see if we can find out who it is.
Master Kiyoshi has instructed me not to let anyone into the living room until his meeting is over. ...Please stay away from that room.
We don't have any reason to bother Kiyoshi, at least for now... Stick to sleuthing one thing at a time, big guy. We need to figure out if that song Rin told us about can lead us to Kaya...
No luck.
Iron-fisted soldier: If you don't behave yourself, I might have to lay down the law. Do we understand each other?
Whoever the guest is, they seem to have strong connections to the military. :checksthegamesname: Things can get messy, methinks.
Easygoing servant: I realize the books are thick and somewhat difficult; I apologize for our lack of comics or magazines.
We're told of a spot where we can pass time while we wait for the meeting to end.
There's a funny draft in here that I didn't feel anywhere else. Let's check every nook and cranny in here. I think we're on to something.
I guess there's more to this room than the servant realized.
> There are scrape marks on the side of the wainscot.
Good job, Omen. Looks like this wainscot is hiding something. Let's use Inspect to find the trick to moving the wainscot. Your Volt-order demons can Inspect things. Let's use a Volt-order demon's power.
> First, summon a Volt-order demon. Press the R1 button to open the menu, then choose "Inspect." When the Volt-order demon Inspects, it'll turn up hard-to-find places or things. Or, just use the L1 button to inspect. Try using Inspect to investigate suspicious places.
Let's see if this works.
It does.
> Take a book?
[Take "Demons of This Earth"]
> Raidou took "Demons of this Earth." As Raidou pulled on the book, the wainscot began to slide away.
So, Miss Kaya's little ditty was actually directions to the basement area... If that's the case, then what did "In the depths of the abyss, the demon's blood must be slain" mean? Anyhow, let's check out the underground, Omen.
There's a Dragon Cave down here.
Raiju, level 16 Volt spawns around the basement. It can't be captured yet, but we can easily kill it by stunning him with Poltergeist's Zan attacks.
Moh Shuvuu: Hey! Hey, mister! Are you really a Devil Summoner?
[Yes]
Moh Shuvuu: A long time ago, I was with a Summoner. I forget his name, though. He acted like I wasn't there, and never thought to heal me when I was hurt. I never had much fun being a demon after that... But, if I had a Summoner who'd never leave me helpless, I'd be his demon for sure!
> In battle, you can bring the demon close to you. Hold the L1 button to call the demon near Raidou, and it will stick close to him. It's best used when dodging enemy attacks.
It's a very useful little feature. Being able to immediately teleport a demon to your location can be used for two things:
1. Getting the demon out of the way of an enemy attack.
2. Putting the demon between yourself and an enemy attack as a meat shield.
> Raidou obtained Fire x15.
More bullets.
There's an alternate exit that leads to a short sidepath on the city map.
> Raidou obtained Soma Drop x1.
A Soma Drop fully recovers the HP and MP of one demon.
Back at the basement, we encounter a large demon. We'll need its assistance to cross the underground river.
Huh? What's a demon like that doing beneath the Daidouji place? It doesn't look like it's about to attack... But, can't just leave it be. For one thing, it's blocking our path. Maybe you can reason with it, Omen.
Demon: Garr... Gaaa! I'm Large Tarrasque, the boss of the Daidouji Residence's underground. What do you want, sonny? You here for a reason, or just poking your nose into other people's business? What!? I'm in the way, am I!? You whippersnappers have the gall to ask for a ride across on my back!? ......Huh. Well, in that case... I want to get liquored up first. Not just any ordinary stuff, mind. I want some Red Wine. Nothing like a good bottle of the red stuff. I'm counting on you, sonny. Now go get me my drink.
Yay, a fetch quest! Perhaps the servants know where to get wine.
Irritated servant: It should be here any minute! I sent the new hire to Tsukudo-Cho for it!
Aren't you the person I asked to handle this...?
Irritated servant: It's not my fault, though! I bet that new hire is just wasting time somewhere...
...Pipe down! This is insulting to our guest. This is all due to your utter lack of leadership ability. ...We will continue this talk later.
What was that about?
Irritated servant: N-No, please forget about it.
Looks like another servant was sent to get wine for the guest, but didn't come back. Let's see if we can intercept the package.
> Her face is deathly pale. She's in no condition to answer questions.
Don't throw in the towel, Omen. People like that often have the most important information. In situations like this, your ancestors turned to mind reading. Mind reading is kind of a Pagan-order specialty. You know any Pagan demons?
> The exhausted servant's thoughts can be heard.
Inner voice: Why'd I have to listen to him talk about his stupid turtle? All I needed was the wine...! ...Taking a cold bath together? Ugh, it makes me sick to my stomach. What I need right now is for a gentleman to make me feel like a lady.
Can do.
Exhausted servant: Huh? Oh, um, yes! Fine! I feel quite a bit better now. THANK you... trust me. Here, you can have this! This wine came here from the owner of Tawara-Ya. It was free... He said he got it for his dead turtle.
So that's what happened. The shopkeeper she wanted to buy the wine from gave it for free, but in exchange made her listen to the stories about his dead turtle that he... cared for. Baths? I don't want to know.
Exhausted servant: ...But, that gives me the heebie-jeebies, and it's heavy, so... I really don't want it! ...I could go for a snack. Dessert parlor, here I come!
Don't rush, I hear they're all out of ice cream.
Exhausted servant: Mmmm... Triple-chocolate sundae. For your information, I always eat the cherry first!
She finally shuts up and leaves. Let's carry the wine to the Tarrasque.
Large Tarrasque: Ohhhh... Hurry! Give an old man his drink! Come on... Just a little closer...
> Approach the Large Tarrasque?
[Yes]
Large Tarrasque: That's the ticket! Thanks for the drink, sonny! But... I'm not going to drink this on an empty stomach! Down the hatch, kiddo!
The Tarrasque attacks. The two Azumi he has as back-up can heal him, so they're disposed of first.
The Tarrasque is also weak to fire. He fights back with Bufu and powerful physical attacks, but you can deal with it by blocking his attacks and hitting him only when he's stunned.
Large Tarrasque: I'll do whatever you ask! Please!
> The negotiation with Large Tarrasque was a success.
We can cross the water now.
Large Tarrasque: Eh? Hey, kid. Is that another kind of liquor I smell on you? Come a little closer.
He smells the booze we found at the mansion a couple of updates ago.
> Raidou moved beside the demon.
Large Tarrasque: I thought as much! I smell the alcohol on you, kiddo, and don't try to hide it! Just give me a little of the ol' drinky and I won't tell your parents.
> Give the Pricey Beer to Large Tarrasque?
[Yes]
> Raidou handed over the Pricey Beer.
Large Tarrasque: Let's have a little taste......... Urgh! G... Gahh...
> It didn't go down well with the demon.
Large Tarrasque: Urk! S-So bitter... what's this malty taste? This tastes like goat piss! Is this what the kids today are drinking!? These old bones are getting cold. I want liquor that'll warm me up.
We'll be able to find the beverage he wants later on. There's a small reward for it. For now, let's move on.
> Go to the other side?
[Yes]
As promised, the Tarrasque carries Raidou on his back.
There's a crystal nearby that Raidou can't reach by himself.
> Azumi obtained Bead x1.
> Raidou obtained Chakra Chip x2.
We discover a chamber with two... matryoshkas in it?
> It resembles a hooded woman.
> It's about the size of an infant.
What are they doing here?
Finally, we discover what seems to be a cell.
It looks pretty fishy. I'd say it's a cover-up job.
Bingo.
> Pick it up?
[Yes]
Notice how the book fits exactly into the space where there wasn't any dust. This is clearly some important stuff. No time for privacy, let's open 'er up and take a read.
My uncle has seemed a little off lately. He sounded pretty steamed on the phone just now. I hope he's not letting those jackals get to him about the debt from the factory.
April 4th
Weather: rain
Dad collapsed this morning. My uncle said we'd have to have a private talk soon. About the inheritance, I guess. I hate that he's saying these things while Dad is still alive.
April 5th
Weather: cloudy
My uncle didn't want to talk about the property. Instead, he told me about the Daidouji curse. I'll be 16 in only a month or two... I don't know what to do. Someone, please help me... I woke up in this prison cell. How did I end up here? My uncle came in my room, and... I don't remember anything that happened after that.
An uncle suffering from debt at his factory, a father in critical condition... And, didn't Rin say that the Daidouji daughters were cursed to be possessed by a demon? Whoever hid this diary wasn't just trying to hide it from humans. He was thinking about demons, too. We've gotta brace the uncle in the living room, whatever it takes.
Kiyoshi clearly knows far more about his niece than he led us to believe. In the next update, we'll see what his involvement in all this is.
Before we verify Rin's lead, let's fulfill the Agathion's request and capture some bugs. It mentioned sweets were important.
