^ I think one such explanation is that a beginner would be a peasant with no PC class, and upon achieving a PC class you are officially "trained"
take for instance a fighter, you come in with all simple/martial weapon proficiencies, that means you know how to use at least two dozen different weapons
add in two feats and those are basically skills you developed in training
the problem is that while that's fine for flavor, mechanically, it leads a kobold killing you 'cuz it rolled a 20, and considering how many kobolds you'll fight in your career as a level 1 douchebag (over 20) there's a good chance you'll get that crit straight to your taint
